The Ciaphas Cain books are at the top of my recommended list for 40K lists, by far and away leaving the Space Marine bolter porn in the dust in my mind. The series is best described as <<Flashman>> to <<Gaunt's Ghosts>> <<Sharpe's Rifles>>.

“Political philosophers have often pointed out that in wartime, the citizen, the male citizen at least, loses one of his most basic rights, his right to life; and this has been true ever since the French Revolution and the invention of conscription, now an almost universally accepted principle. But these same philosophers have rarely noted that the citizen in question simultaneously loses another right, one just as basic and perhaps even more vital for his conception of himself as a civilized human being: the right not to kill.”

"The chancellor, the late chancellor, was only partly correct. He was obsolete. But so is the State, the entity he worshipped. Any state, entity, or ideology becomes obsolete when it stockpiles the wrong weapons: when it captures territories, but not minds; when it enslaves millions, but convinces nobody. When it is naked, yet puts on armor and calls it faith, while in the Eyes of God it has no faith at all. Any state, any entity, any ideology that fails to recognize the worth, the dignity, the rights of Man...that state is obsolete."

The 40K IP does nothing for me since there has been a veritable deluge of 40K games. I may still get Rogue Trader, but that will be based on the quality of the game, not the IP.

Dan Abnett has written more than 10 Gaunt novels alone. Add his Ravenor and Horus Heresy stuff, there are far more than 10 novels.

The truth is though that the vast majority of GW novels range from trash to garbage.

It seems likely that GW is trying to make 40K stand for the number of novels in the IP

Yeah, I can't wait until they reveal that the 8 part Siege of Terra series actually ends with a 12 part series Bridge of the Vengeful Sprit.

Oh, Rogue Trader is by Owlcat. Not sure if this is good or bad news. Probably means it'll really be a old-style CRPG, but very buggy and with a bloated character generation.

Owlcat doing 40k RPG.... is potentially compelling. I am not a 40k fan, but I enjoyed some of the games. I do wonder how it will holdup without spectacle - when I think of 40k this is mostly what I think of, chainsawing orcs in Space Marine, bloody clash of armies in Total Warhammer or Dawn of War. Not sure how much there is to the setting outside of that.

hive city have some interesting potential for a narrative driven rpg that have been wasted for  long time

space marine looks so boring

hope owlcat can find some interesting angle to make things work

I've read all the Gaunt's Ghosts books and the inquisitor stuff. The parts I liked the most in them is where the normal day to day life was the theme.

Let's be honest, most of the time the battle scenes are just random ww1/ww2 battles where the factions names have been replaced. Especially some of the later Gaunt's Ghosts stuff pretty much reads like a chapter from Der Landser. Kinda bleh, tbh.

BTW, if you happen to have phones, Diablo Immortal released today. There's also an open beta for the PC version. Played for 30mins, plays a lot like a simpler version of D3.

Not really related to video game news, but rather something I posted about in here previously: startpage.com is a Netherlands-based search engine that serves up Google search results (including even with respect to Google's specific search operators), but minus the whole Google part of the equation. I only learned this because I was screwing around with the Vivaldi browser today, which comes with like ten different search engines, and seeing which, if any, did what I wanted...and was surprised to see that Startpage did, and I went to go figure out why. Well, that's apparently because they just piggyback off of Google's own search results. I might have to make a permanent switch.

How I have existed fills me with horror. For I have failed in everything - spelling, arithmetic, riding, tennis, golf; dancing, singing, acting; wife, mistress, whore, friend. Even cooking. And I do not excuse myself with the usual escape of 'not trying'. I tried with all my heart.

In my dreams, I am not crippled. In my dreams, I dance.

I'm the enemy, 'cause I like to think, I like to read. I'm into freedom of speech, and freedom of choice. I'm the kinda guy that likes to sit in a greasy spoon and wonder, "Gee, should I have the T-bone steak or the jumbo rack of barbecue ribs with the side-order of gravy fries?" I want high cholesterol! I wanna eat bacon, and butter, and buckets of cheese, okay?! I wanna smoke a Cuban cigar the size of Cincinnati in the non-smoking section! I wanna run naked through the street, with green Jell-O all over my body, reading Playboy magazine. Why? Because I suddenly may feel the need to, okay, pal? I've SEEN the future. Do you know what it is? It's a 47-year-old virgin sitting around in his beige pajamas, drinking a banana-broccoli shake, singing "I'm an Oscar Meyer Wiene"

So about Owlcat's new game being a WH40K game, apparently on their Discord channel there's a lot of talk about how Owlcat will get to write their own story and characters for this game. Furthermore, from Paizo's reddit posts, it seems like there's been a falling-out of sorts between Paizo and Owlcat. This causes me to wonder if perhaps what happened was that Owlcat wanted to make their next Pathfinder game one that would not use a Paizo AP and instead only use the Pathfinder ruleset (and setting?) but otherwise create original material. But Paizo vetoed this idea and insisted that any Pathfinder (or Starfinder) game must be based on one of their published APs. So Owlcat decided to walk away. If I'm right about this, then WotR may well be the last Pathfinder game we get, at least from Owlcat. :(

I think it's survival + crafting + monsters. Would be pretty neat if it had a story as well. That way it would be survival + crafting + Resident Evil Village.

There used to be a signature here, a really cool one...and now it's gone.

The Resi 4 remake makes me sad because that means they are skipping the one game in the series that most desperately needs a remake, Code Veronica, and remaking a game that doesn't really need a remake instead. Resi 4 already has modern shooter mechanics so it's mostly just getting a graphical upgrade. Code Veronica was an ambitious project where many sacrifices wound up being made to the final product due to the technical limitations of the time. They could now make that game how it was intended to be initially and then some, but instead they are skipping it. ;(

What did Paizo say that implied there was a falling out? The only thing I saw was them saying that the then unannounced game was not Starfinder, and then when pressed they said it was not a Paizo IP either. Was there more to it than that?

We haven't had a proper warhammer RPG. As Mal said, Inquisitor was a (dull from what I read) diablo clone.

I hope they make it less annoying than Pathfinder where every little critter drained your stats on hit.

If they stay true to Fantasy Flights games, you're likely loosing limbs right and left together with those stats. Those critcharts are quite mean 😂

Civilization, in fact, grows more and more maudlin and hysterical; especially under democracy it tends to degenerate into a mere combat of crazes; the whole aim of practical politics is to keep the populace alarmed (and hence clamorous to be led to safety) by menacing it with an endless series of hobgoblins, most of them imaginary. - H.L. Mencken
