It's a good game and certainly worth playing. It's got enough differentiation from a standard city builder to be interesting on its own, and some strong narrative aspects in its scenarios (which are also its biggest weakness, because it's scripted there's a lot of scope and a certain amount of requirement that you game the system knowing what is coming). I'm not as wholesale in my praise as the average games journo was but I'd still solidly recommend it.

I gave it a go, and played through the first scenario - it's pretty good fun. It's not very systematically interesting, but each scenario has scripted story which keeps things engaging. There is some replayability but not too much.

Also the game with all DLCs for 50%  off on GOG, probably on steam as well, but, 25EUR for this one is not that cheap :)

I'd rather take a recommendation from you, than anything from a average post 2015 game journo ;) Game is on my wishlist, but still not in the price area, with which I would be satisfied :shrugz:

It's on gamepass. I will be giving it a go once I subscribe in the near future, reviews are overall positive. I don't think anyone knows how good it will be longtime, but at least seems to offer a decent alternative to Civ.

It's amplitude - the base game will be solid. Small dlcs will be fun. Large dlcs will add new mechanics that don't work that we'll (looking at you espionage in Endless Space 2).

Public beta has started for Guild Wars 2 and the new elite classes. Every player (regardless of whether they have any expansions, f2p or otherwise) will get 3 new temporary extra character slots where they can create up to 3 insta-max-level characters for one of the first 3 elite specs to be tested. They come complete with all the gear and things needed to try them out. Only catch is... nothing those characters do will benefit your account. I.e. they can't accumulate wealth, map rewards or similar for you and they disappear when the beta ends. But, you get a bit of time playing them at max level and see if it's something for you. Four sessions are planned. The first just started. Further 2 sessions will feature 3 elite specs and the fourth and last one supposedly making all 9 available to test together. They'll probably monitor closely how they perform in all game modes.

There are places where this whole concept is janky, and in the spirit of a game that can be merciless about allowing you to make it unwinnable, I decided not to work around them. There are not enough light sources for four players in a universe where darkness equals death, or someone could be holding a crucial object and disconnect, leaving it frozen to their immobile body until they return...if they return. There are possible solutions to fix these concerns, but one could also just make the game unwinnable without warning by eating the garlic seven moves in, so for now I’m hoping this produces the occasional hilarious disaster; for example, the troll might kill the player that has the sword and lamp, scattering him and his belongings in the forest above ground, leaving everyone else in the room defenseless against the troll and unable to flee because of the grues. They’ll be joining him above ground shortly.

Jakefriend, who publicly declined to name the publisher, explained that if a usually ambiguous breach of contract was found, the contract allowed the publisher to keep the rights to the game's IP. The publisher would also be given all rights to sell the game, and Jakefriend would lose his royalty, effectively giving the publisher 100% of the revenue.

 

Jakefriend also said the contract would require him to pay back all of the advance money given to him, and incredibly, that the publisher would be able to take control over the game's production and finish development at Jakefriend's personal cost, and with no limit to how much they could charge.
