I have to tell you.... in my line of work that attitude will get people killed. Isn't that been norm in US politics in past two years. I mean alternative facts don't appear in impromptu interviews but they have been used as reason for many policies like current shut down, but for some reason lots of people only care that politician don't really know their facts when some newbie youngling politician who can't really effect any policies by herself, don't know some details how things work in US political system. This is of course a socialist ideal... 70% marginal tax that would come in effect after first 10 million dollars. Highest marginal tax rate in US history was 94% that come in effect after 200 000 dollars (2.5 million in today's money) in 1944. And during USA's "golden years" from 1950 to 1970 marginal tax rate for those who earned over 200000 dollars never dipped under 70%. It wasn't until 1981 The Economic Recovery Tax Act which drop highest marginal tax rate in USA from 70% to 50%. High marginal tax rates aren't really meant to collect taxes but direct rich people invest their money instead of hoarding it. I'd say the difference would be the gleeful acknowledgement that they know their positions is factually wrong but they stick by it anyway. Recent examples like Trump I think they probably believe everything they are selling. Ignorance is one thing. Pitiable, regrettable (especially for us) but different from knowing wrong and choosing it anyway. But then again even THAT is hardly unheard of in US politics. All I'm going to say is there were other names on all of the ballots than just Republicans and Democrats. The day we stop accepting the better of two bad choices and going with 3rd or 4th options is the day the two main choices will start improving. If we don't buy what they are selling maybe they will try selling us something better. Just a thought. We get the government we deserve. And we get it good and hard. smjjames Posted January 11, 2019 Share Posted January 11, 2019 WSJ (The Hill article though as the WSJ one is paywalled) and Republicans are worried about the precedent that doing a National Emergency to get around congress is going to set and that Democrats could take advantage of it by doing a national emergency on climate change or something. While I think they're hyperventillating somewhat, they do have a point about setting precedent.Speaking of setting precedents... if the Republicans are so worried about this one, maybe they should have thought twice about some of the recent precedents that they've made, which kind of set things up for this to happen. Gromnir Posted January 11, 2019 Share Posted January 11, 2019 in and of itself, declaring a state o' emergency doesn't mean much. as we noted earlier, a President has broad authority to declare national emergencies. what is significant is the specific enumerated provisions the chief executive must identify when making such announcements. building a wall requires money in large quantities and likely the allocation o' military resources. will also require condemnation o' large amounts o' private owned land... which will certain have gd transformed into a gibbering and frothing mass o' apoplectic fury. have military step in and take private owned land were one o' those foundational Declaration' Independence issues. is also the reason you see so few red state governors from border states supporting trump on this issue. declare or continue a national emergency on terrorism when you got bipartisan support o' Congress is one thing. declare state o' emergency because Congress is in opposition to chief executive desires opens a pandora's box o' problems. use emergency to take private land and loosen government purse strings? an almost novel use o' executive power, and unlikely to survive legal scrutiny, though such a court process would be torturous long. 'course this is now very much a political issue divorced from actual issue o' building a wall and border security. nobody wants to budge or blink or whatever is metaphor o' choice. as an aside, executive orders is a much different mechanic, and President could never generate billions o' dollars or take private land with executive orders anyways. obama did abuse executive orders to circumvent republican senate, but for the most part, Congress let him do so. the increasing torpid nature o' Congress allowed for executive excesses, and (at least from democrat pov) arguable required executive action 'cause o' legislative indolence. regardless, this whole thing is nuts. early last year, with a republican house and senate, trump coulda' gotten $25 billion dollars for a big and beautiful concrete wall if he had eased daca restrictions and made legal options for immigration less restrictive. were a bipartisan plan. trump wouldn't budge. in 2019 trump wants $5.7 billion from a democrat controlled house and decides now is time for a shutdown? would love to play poker with this guy. It's not often I see political news that makes me happy. In some ways I was hoping she would hold off till 2024 and try to run on a ticket (maybe Sanders) or serve as SoS for a term first. I will not vote for her, She is still a representative of a party with far too many members that think the rights and property of the individual are only theirs at the pleasure of the state.
