Greetings, Watchers,

We hope you've been enjoying all the soft balls we've used to ease you into Pillars of Eternity II: Deadfire's combat until now, but the baby gloves are coming off. This month, we're releasing the Abydon and Skaen challenges in Patch 2.1, a Mega Boss for those who adhere to the "get good" philosophy, and an entire DLC focused around proving your worth through glorious combat. Prepare yourselves, Watchers - none of this is for the unworthy.

Seeker, Slayer, Survivor

Far from the bustling trade lanes of the Deadfire Archipelego, the most ambitious warriors of Eora gather to compete for divine favor. Face the challenges of Kazuwari's Crucible and seek treasure and truth in an arena designed to test the mettle of you and your party. Slay your way through the most challenging foes you have ever faced, both past and present. Survive the trials and whims of the spirits and their worshipers to prove you stand above even the greatest the Deadfire has to offer.

Be ready, Watcher. Seeker, Slayer, Survivor comes September 25th.

Patch 2.1 and Incoming

deadfire-update-53-magran-challenge--thu

Patch 2.1 will be available on September 11th! It's currently on the Beta Branch, and Josh Sawyer would welcome any feedback you might have for the God Challenges below:

  • Abydon - The god of the forge is ready to challenge you with forged items you carry. The more you use weapons and armor, the more they will wear down and become "Damaged". This modifier will make them progressively worse and eventually destroy them unless the mods are removed through Enchantments. Choose the items you will wear into battle wisely!
  • Skaen - With Skaen's challenge, when indoors or at night, fog of war encroaches more. Torches and lanterns can partially offset the additional fog of war, but only a little.

Next month, we'll be bringing our first Mega Boss, Belranga, to Deadfire. This poison-dripping monstrosity is only for the highest leveled players and will test your party's mettle to new heights. We'll have more information on Belranga and her ravenous brood in the coming weeks, so stay tuned!

Hi Dan,

could you post a link to the screenshots in full resolution?

As is they're fairly tiny and can't be enlarged.

EDIT: The "check out our support page" link goes to the RPG France article.

Wait, was this update written in August? The megaboss appears to be a part of Patch 3.0, which I assume is supposed to be out on September 25th together with the new DLC.

Could have been, especially given that 2.1 is in beta atm and that graphic shows it as releasing in August along with the Abydon and Skaen challenges which are also in the 2.1 beta that is just now available. Of course, it's plausible that they might delay parts of the free patch stuff in order to get the DLC out... Hard to say how inaccurate this graphic is.

Okay, Andrea, but it's only because I like you and not because that was a great idea that I should have totally done to begin with.

The Megabosses will be released via free DLC rather than being bundled into a patch.

While I'd expect it to get released alongside DLC2 and patch 3.0, it isn't tied to a specific update, and can be released later if the schedule requires.

It makes sense to put out a free DLC that adds a location along with a paid DLC if the paid DLC begins with a missive; players can go check out the new location and then when they get back on the boat they get the missive too. What they've said about SSS suggests the entrance to the DLC might be level-gated as well, which would be a good idea- if they just send a missive with the DLC installed then new players will get bombarded with messages the first time they leave Port Maje

Like the Courier gets bombarded with quest updates the first time they leave Doc’s house :(

Except the update also says right at the beginning:

This month, we're releasing the Abydon and Skaen challenges in Patch 2.1, a Mega Boss for those who adhere to the "get good" philosophy, and an entire DLC focused around proving your worth through glorious combat.

"Challenges in patch 2.1, a mega boss, and the second DLC." Sounds like they're considering the mega boss separate from the patch, or they'd have said "challenges and a mega boss in patch 2.1"

Megaboss is in Patch 3.0...which is also this month: https://forums.obsidian.net/topic/105588-so-wait-if-patch-21-is-coming-on-september-11th-and-the-seeker-slayer-survivor-dlc-is-coming-on-september-25th/

The three things we should see in the next few weeks are:

  • "Abydon and Skaen challenges" ---> (Patch 2.1)
  • "Mega Boss for those who adhere to the "get good" philosophy" ---> (Free DLC6, LAXF)
  • "An entire DLC focused around proving your worth" ---> (Paid DLC2, LAX01) & (Patch 3.0)

I wouldn't have brought it up if there weren't some confirmation via data-mining that the Megabosses were indeed a separate DLC, the mysterious LAXF package that I started seeing references to a little over a month ago.

OK, but even taking that possibility into account, the update contradicts itself. It says the megaboss is coming out this month at the beginning and next month later on. Which is it?

So, I guess it does contradict itself.

All we know for certain is that 2.1 will be released on the 11th, 3.0 and DLC2 on the 25th, and LAXF Megabosses whenever they decide to ship it.

With timelines sliding around, who know's when the above post was drafted. The "Patch 2.1 and Incoming" section was probably information meant for release in late August.
