Kain Parker sits enjoying the view of his high rise, effortlessly comfortable in his Italian leather drinking chair. Below him the fires of the anime riots burn bright, casting his shadow high on the ceiling above him. Kain slowly rubs his hands together excitedly as he takes in the sight of sub-forums consuming themselves. "Yes," he muses to himself "yes...."

I am very interested to see how Obsidian will balance the barbarian ability carnage. If a single dip into barbarian gives access to the ability as it exists in POE1 it would be invaluable for any melee focused character. I wonder if it will be less powerful to start then scale with level to avoid being overpowered.

I have seen plenty of japanese animation that are triumphs in art or pleasant explorations into the fantastic, but to indulge in a genre so played out and simplistic in its narrative execution that the basic tropes of human characterization can be discerned on sight or succinctly with one word, why bother watching it or continuing to make it? Did that make sense or has thread affected my brain more heavily than I thought?

Paypal backing ?
boffmoffet replied to obsinaut's topic in Pillars of Eternity II: Deadfire General Discussion (NO SPOILERS)
Any word on paypal support yet? 6 hours left and probably a good amount of people looking to contribute through Paypal. -
I know we will be allowed to pick sub-classes for our multi-class characters, but will we also be able to select two sub-classes within the same character class through multi-classing? I think it might be fun for a ghost heart lodge ranger to eventually start progressing as a base class ranger and form a new bond while still calling on his spirit companion. I am sure each class will have sub classes rife for combination as well, but I know this might add quite a bit of complexity to account for.

Cipher weapon glow stops working after first save/load
boffmoffet replied to withershins's question in Patch Beta Bugs and Support
I have encountered this one as well. I actually have left my Cipher save to rot as a result. Small bug, but cipher glow is cosmetically important to me for reasons beyond reasoning. -
As a kid I waited with very little patience for games I was looking forward to. They could not come out fast enough after annoucement, and I wanted them to be cheap because I was broke all the time. At times, sadly, I pirated them. Now I pay extra money beyond retail price to fund games with the hope that the developers use that money to take as long as they want. The longer, the better.

I think the style of the portraits is exciting. The wording of the stretch goal makes it sound like the main companions will maintain the old look, and the new style will allow for MANY portraits to be made in a timely manner. It would be great if they made all these portraits available for player made mercs.

Is there any chance another patch is still going to polish everything off, and on the condition of that being the case, can we please finally get a fix for the AI to not be so stupid as to start attacking charmed and confused allies? Abilities that remove control of a character are a frustrating thing to begin with, as they should be. I like charms and such in my RPG. But for the AI to start pwning your squishies is kinda infuriating and AI was added quite a few patches ago. PS Love the game, sorry for complaining.

I am delighted to hear that companion consequences are being taken into consideration. Aloth and Pallegina's story reactivity during the ending slides were two of the most satisfying elements of POE1. In response to OP, I can see Obsidian bringing Aloth back into the fold easily because spreading knowledge Aloth and keeping secrets Aloth would both have a stake in a giant resurrected god avatar that wrecked your ally/former allies castle and essence. Whatever his motivation you can guarantee the Watcher of Dyrwood is gonna be in the thick of things. Best to tag along. Pallegina's reactivity is even more exciting for me on a personal level. My kind wayfarer kept giving her passionate and benevolent advice that got her kicked from the order of five suns and resulted in her joining the wayfarers. The results reflected that I had not look after a friends best interest but scored a solid asset for my order as a result of following its code. Quite enjoyable.

Romance
boffmoffet replied to Skyleaf's topic in Pillars of Eternity II: Deadfire General Discussion (NO SPOILERS)
Do we really need to have this same conversation again? Over and over? Casting my NO ballot for 50th time on this issue again. Sorry to those who like to have Waifu in-game, but please, NO. *edited to sound less salty. -
Turn based
boffmoffet replied to Petrus's topic in Pillars of Eternity II: Deadfire General Discussion (NO SPOILERS)
I don't quite buy the "it hasn't been done well before, ergo, it cannot be done well" line of thinking. I dont know if I particularly do either, but I always try to evaluate a new feature for a game realistically by considering the time and money that would have to go into it. I dont want Obsidian to blow dev time on a half assed turn based mode, and I REALLY dont want them blowing time and money on a fully functional turn based mode. It could be done well given enough time, but that much time for a feature that doesn't really fit the spirit of the POE franchise seems impractical, or a waste of resources. -
Baldur's Gate 2 is a strange outlier in RPG sequels that start as high level. It only worked because of the unique way baldurs gate transferred a P&P system to a video game. It was kind of a wonky and awkward fit, and it was not particularly balanced well. I strongly prefer systems and games that start at level 1, they just seem to be more fun and balanced. I also have a strong addiction to creating my own party of mercs with fleshed out backstories and relationships, then never playing them. That takes forever at high levels even with the considerable amount of meta knowledge I have built up.

Turn based
boffmoffet replied to Petrus's topic in Pillars of Eternity II: Deadfire General Discussion (NO SPOILERS)
No thanks. POE without RTwP would be like grilled cheese without the cheese. I could be diplomatic and suggest a mode for that, but we all probably have enough experience to know those always blow. -
Aloth and the Leaden Key
boffmoffet replied to boffmoffet's topic in Pillars of Eternity: Stories (Spoiler Warning!)
I guess Aloth just never came across as someone with the strength of character to lead an organization of such scope. Thaos had a great deal of faith in Woedica, despite knowing the true nature of the gods. Enough faith to sustain a operation of such size and scope that maintaining it required the power to nearly cheat death with the help of a god. Under Thaos it seemed as if the two main goals of the Leaden Key were to suppress animancy and in doing so the exploration of the soul to prevent the true nature of the gods from being known, and to further Woedica's goals whilst doing so. Aloth in comparison would seem a poor fit as a avatar of woedican justice. Aloth does not have a great deal of faith in people, but he certainly did not seem to have faith in the gods either. The organization would likely cease being a tool for Woedican plots and justice and continue in some way as the secret defenders of the status quo. Now that I consider it, I would like to see Aloth return in the sequel with another set of secrets, ulterior motives, and betrayals of trust, so maybe a Leaden Key Aloth is the way to go for POE2. I am glad we have had some teasers that suggest he is returning for the sequel, because at this point I would enjoy him equally as a trusted companion or not so trustworthy antagonist. Or both. -
There has always been one thing that bothered me in POE, right at the end. Aloth, after seeing all the horrors and sadness that Thaos and the Leaden Key inflicted upon the Dyrwood, immediately considers replacing the guy! The god-slave monster we spent hours trying to put down and he is like "well, that looks fun, and SO necessary! Gotta keep them fake gods a secret!" I understand how he became involved with the leaden key from his short story. I can see how a young Aloth not wishing to return home to his father and having no patron or alternative, would turn the leaden key for answers or a way out. The things he witnessed his fellow students and amateur animancers do might turn someone off animancy. I get that. However, going from a principled stance against animancy to wanting to run the leaden key after knowing the full extent of its purpose and methods, seems like a stretch for any character much less Aloth. Worse yet if you dont take him with you in the final battle you dont get the chance to really influence his ending and stop him. Not a fan of that characterization of him, or the implications of that design decision. Take your bud Aloth or damn him down a dark path. Anyone else have thoughts on this?

legendary people of classes
boffmoffet replied to asnjas's topic in Pillars of Eternity: General Discussion (NO SPOILERS)
Although none of these legendary Kind Wayfarer paladins appeared in-game, their relics can be found throughout the Dyrwood, lost in the hard to reach and forgotten places of the Eora, as is befitting their order. Pefrel: Bearer of the breastplate Hand and Key. Adrem Delfar, Bearer of the Patchwork boots. St. Ydwen, Bearer of the greatsword Redeemer. The Twelve Towers, a Dyrwood subset of the order. All twelve met a violent end, but one unnamed knight had her shield recovered. The Dyrwoodians like their heroes in dozens apparently. -
http://sugarbombed.com/forums/threads/chris-avellone-interview-part-1.21018/ So basically Chris implies that he was unhappy with upper managment because they were clearly looking to be bought out, and some project leads have felt this attitude has affected their decisions during development. This interview really bums me out. I love Obsidian as a studio and I figured the crowdfunding and sales for Pillars of Eternity was enough to stave off becoming another beloved studio just looking to sell out at the top. This seems to be a cyclical pattern within the industry. A team of developers starts pushing out games I love and coming into their own, upper management sells them, they push out maybe one or two good games, then you wait for the talent to slowly quit as the new structure destroys their enthusiasm. Then you have to wait a year or two for your favorite talent to start or find a new studio that will after a few projects, sell out again. Is this a cycle we are damned to, or am I perceiving a pattern that does not exist?
