No experience from some fights?
Heijoushin replied to sapientNode's question in Pillars of Eternity: Technical Support (Spoiler Warning!)
Yes. Technically, fights never give experience in this game (a point that was much debated on these forums) When you kill a monster, you get some info for your beastiary, and that "info" gives you a little experience. However, once your bestiary is complete for a certain type (say, spiders), you no longer get any experience for killing them. -
Hello chaps, Games nowadays have kind of turned magic into a gun. Aim at goblin, cast fireball. And since martial classes now also often have loads of abilities, and mana bars, the line blurs further. Which game best captures the feeling of being a mage? For me, it would be Ultima 8, which is really old, and generally considered a flop. However, it really captured my imagination when I was little. To learn magic, you have to join various schools, all of which have their own unique trials, rituals, spell-crafting etc. Preparing a spell took time, since you had to find the correct reagents, incantation, foci etc. It was a lot of work for a few spells, but I loved it. It's like... a mage is kind of scholar. Although the "adventure mage" is a staple of RPGs, I more imagine a mage as someone who spends most of their time in a tower, reading books and preparing spells. Alternatively, they're someone who should learn their trade from a master or a school, not levelling up by killing goblins. What games come to mind?

More than the 9 we already have? Seriously, man. I hardly manage to give everyone we have so far, a ride. Most of them sit at home, while I stick with my favorites. Both in terms of personality as in combat value. Proper reaction n the other hand, is a valid point. I would love to see people react to a Bleak Walker or a priest of Skaen, just to give two examples. Especially within the party, since - at least - Durance should have an opinion. Okay, I hear you. If you want to do everyone's quests, then there are already a lot to get around to. But if you play the game multiple times, then it would be nice to be able to say "Okay, I need a fighter. Do I want to use Eder, or fighter B this time round?" -
Refreshing Story
Heijoushin replied to Raimon777's topic in Pillars of Eternity: Stories (Spoiler Warning!)
I agree. There was a big plot dump when you finally get to talk to the Gods. As much as I enjoyed that sequence, it could have used a little build up. Also... wow, a place where you can talk directly to the Gods... in retrospect, why don't more people use that? Surely it should be a pretty damn important religious destination!! When Waidwen's Legacy started, didn't anyone think to ask them? Exactly, being a watcher and being awakened are two separate issues. Does the machine in the beginning cause both? That point is pretty vague. I think it would have been more interesting if the PC was actively trying to help the hollowborn. As I said, I really didn't give a damn about Thaos, except maybe at the end. -
Mysterious corpses
Heijoushin replied to Stoner's question in Pillars of Eternity: Technical Support (Spoiler Warning!)
That's weird, I don't recall seeing a corpse there. Perhaps a thief that that guard just killed? -

Well, I'm open to this. And the Devil of Caroc proves that Obsidian can get creative race/appearance wise. But before we look at monsters companions, we first need: 1) Proper reactions to the current races. 2) More companions in general. -
Ah that's my problem here, how they pulled it off. It feels, I don't know, cliché. Not to mention the quests do not show overmuch originality (although if we're going to be honest, all your basic quests will always be kill/escort/deliver timesinks). Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but I've played Torment, Kingdoms of Amalur and Divinity Original Sin, all of which have a soul-based storyline, and I still believe PoE's vanilla story is 100% original. I'm sad that the expansion's isn't. Oh and by the way, on the topic of clichés and tropes. I believe Dragon Age Origins did an absolutely magnificent job at avoiding them. Yes you do have your classical dwarves and elves, but are they different than what you usually expect ! Shame they ruined the franchise with DA2 and DA3 I guess. Dragon Age Origins is Trope Central! The few things that aren't were stolen from somewhere else (elves being treated as scum being stolen wholesale from The Witcher books and game, Grey Wardens were a dumb version of the Night's Watch from A Song of Ice and Fire...) To be honest there is not a huge amount of original writing around. Neither Martin or Sapkowski are original either - they also copied freely from those who came before them. Well, you know what they say: "Great artists steal" and all that. I wouldn't look down on these gents because they took a little bit from here and there...

Sure, some might be liches or guls, but not all of them surely! I think that *can* be fun, but only if used carefully. It was awesome to find that, but I have no desire to have to do some ridiculous questline to obtain 1/3rd of my spell list or anything like that. I hear you... I also wouldn't want to run around like an idiot to get half my spellbook. Ideally, you'd only want a really tiny percent of "exotic" spells as quest rewards. Ah, I forgot about that quest! That could link things nicely!

In this game, any character can open locks or remove traps, so you needn't base your decision on that. As jsaving has said, Rogues have the highest DPS damage, and among the martial classes, I find them the most fun to play, since they need lots of micro (they can dish out the damage, but they're fragile). Sneak, shoot, run, turn around, stab stab etc. Of course, any spell-slinger makes a good ranged class, and ciphers are no exception. They also have great control abilities. In particular, at level 2 they get a paralysis spell called mental binding which you can spam for most of the game. Neither of those classes has particularly good buffs or debuffs (that is the domain of priests) but I think they're both fun classes to play.

I don't know bro. When you really really sit down and think about fantasy, it's not a genre that brims with originality. Ancient Dwarven strongholds have been around since Lord of the Rings after all. At least they worked the watcher angle in, which was cool. It's impossible to avoid all tropes. What matters is how you pull them off.

Hey guys. I recently did the Cragshold high-level quest. I wasn't expecting much, since on these forums people have mostly been complaining about it (difficultly) Still, I thought the last part (once you're actually inside the tower) was really fun! All the scheming apprentices working on their own experiments and vying to be the masters favorite was really cool. I think you could make a game on that theme alone! Anyway, when you finally confront Conelhaut, he mentions that the mercenaries have probably been hired by one of his rivals. Here he names all the "spell inventors" like Minoletta, Kalakoth, Llengrath, Ninagauth etc. Pretty cool touch. This might be a little nitpicky, but does that mean that all those great wizards are still alive? That means that half of your spells have been invented within the last 100 or so years. Makes magic in the Dyrwood seem pretty young. Also, I think it would be fun if there were more spells that you can't select when leveling up. It just makes it more fun to find a new spellbook. It was a blast to get Conelhaut's book and get a new spell.

Devil's Name
Heijoushin replied to dukemagus's topic in Pillars of Eternity: Stories (Spoiler Warning!)
Don't think it's ever mentioned anywhere. -
Why did you start a second thread to bitch about her? You already have one here -> https://forums.obsidian.net/topic/82061-devil-of-caroc-far-worse-than-other-rogues-gameplay-discussion-only-avoid-story-spoilers-pls/ Meh, basically I agree with you. But I still love her for her personality and voice.

Is Wizard still garbage?
Heijoushin replied to Zherot's topic in Pillars of Eternity: General Discussion (NO SPOILERS)
Today, I killed a certain high-level optional wizard boss in WM and got a really awesome spell That felt wonderful! No late game treats for ciphers! (Not saying the other classes are bad, just defending wizards from this slander!)
