Why hatchets?
Heijoushin replied to Heijoushin's topic in Pillars of Eternity: General Discussion (NO SPOILERS)
Yup, rules. Every good magic system in fantasy has rules. Whether it's MP points, or a limited amount of spells per day or whatever. You need some kind of limitation or else your mages will be gods who can do anything. So magic itself isn't realistic. Yet still it works with rules. Also, unless otherwise stated, we assume that most things in a fantasy world work the same way as in the real world. If it isn't specifically stated that, in this world, hatchets are all blessed with super defensive power, then we must assume that they work the same as hatchets in our world. -
Why hatchets?
Heijoushin replied to Heijoushin's topic in Pillars of Eternity: General Discussion (NO SPOILERS)
Well now, that's actually a point. Godlike should get neg. stealth skill for standing out too much;) Hmmm, I don't think it's realism we want... more like... logic? Even a magical fantasy world needs to have logic to function. -
They're not taking it away though, they're giving the option to take it away but it's still very much there for those who don't enable the option. I really don't understand why adding in an option bothers people so much. Videogames are all about facing obstacles and overcome them. When I first played PoE I sucked very hard, but I played further, studied the mechanics, got better and now I consider myself quite a decent player, going for PotD at the moment. Not only my characters got better, me as a player also got better and it left me with a good feeling. Taking that away takes away what I consider a very important aspect of gaming itself. But of course I can't and won't speak for everyone. Not all video games serve the same purpose; nor does everyone maintain the exact same end-result for playing a video game. Also, you just quoted someone saying, "they're not taking it away though, they're giving the option," to which you then responded, "taking that away takes away what I consider a very important aspect." So the question is... which part of "they're not taking it away though, they're giving the option," did you not understand? Unless you're suggesting that if someone uses that option on their own local installation of the game, you are somehow negatively impacted? I imagine they mean that the more time/energy developers spend developing things like story mode, the less time/energy they have for other parts of the experience. To a certain extent, I can appreciate this. For example, these days, lots of development time goes into multiplayer, so the single player experience sometimes suffers. But as Mr. Sawyer said, they just tweaked the stats of the monsters a little. It doesn't seem like a vast expenditure of time or resources.

Barbarian Companion?
Heijoushin replied to Heijoushin's topic in Pillars of Eternity: General Discussion (NO SPOILERS)
Not to whine, but why don't they include this kind of information in the email they send us? (and in the official announcements on this site) A new companion is way more interesting than some new Vithrack concept art... -
Great to finally have a date! Looking forward to it! Can't say I'm looking forward to fighting more Vithrack though... all those charm spells!(T_T)

Hmmm... there was a discussion about this before... Ah, here it is (for reference) https://forums.obsidian.net/topic/70497-adult-language-filter-option/?hl=swearing My 2 cents: People in a fantasy universe also swear. As long as it's not excessive, and as long as the language usage matches the character, I'm okay with this.

Barbarian Companion?
Heijoushin replied to Heijoushin's topic in Pillars of Eternity: General Discussion (NO SPOILERS)
Yeah... I was thinking that too. It would be ridiculous if you have to complete the whole of WM1 before you can get the barb. Hopefully they'll think of a more elegant solution. -
Well... it doesn't *feel* that linear because there are so many side quests and optional stuff to distract you. After re-playing it several times, I find that I usually start getting bored of the main quest when doing the 3 Leaden Key investigations. They always resolve in the same way, and since there are 3, it always seems like a drag. My personal opinion on the writing of Durance and GM: nice ideas, but too wordy. I would have preferred if their dialogues had less "fluff" and got more to the point. Since Durance's backstory is very relevant to the main storyline, it would be nice to pick his brains about it... if he would shut up with the fire metaphors for two seconds.

Hmmm... I've divided here. I know what you mean. But creating a custom weapon group and then giving yourself a talent would be like getting 4 talents for the price of one. Grouping certain similar weapon types together (I mean, like "pike & spear" or "axe & hatchet") is still not that useful, but seems more logical...

Barbarian Companion?
Heijoushin replied to Heijoushin's topic in Pillars of Eternity: General Discussion (NO SPOILERS)
Really? Does anyone have a link? -
So, info on the White March 2 is still pretty sparse now, right? All we really know is: more stronghold stuff & revised athletics and survival (both good calls btw) I wonder if they'll be able to fit in one last companion? Since barbarian is now officially the only class that doesn't have a pre-made companion, it seems kind of appropriate that the final expansion should introduce one...

To be honest, I was a little frustrated with the thread. As a recently released game, there are/were genuine bugs/issues that would cause the game to crash or become unplayable. Posting in the technical support forum that one companion is slightly weaker than the others seemed nitpicking (especially since the OP posted another thread about the same thing elsewhere) But since the devs have agreed, I suppose I am in the wrong. I apologize.

[2.03] Dragon and Absurd Immunity
Heijoushin replied to theBalthazar's question in Pillars of Eternity: Technical Support (Spoiler Warning!)
SamHam has a point! Whatever happened to Chivalry? A one-on-six duel? (I'm joking but I actually do agree. Should be a boss battle, not a boss + army battle) -
Extra talent points
Heijoushin replied to Kilburn's topic in Pillars of Eternity: General Discussion (NO SPOILERS)
Wow, that sounds like a really awesome bug... -
Hmm....at which difficulty level though? I guess if you have enough fighters you can CC by fanning them out against multiple opponents, but wouldn't you need at least a priest, chanter, or cipher to counter enemy CC? Otherwise I'd think you'd be reloading a lot in White March. Admittedly, I do have a priest (My party is: fighter, paladin, rogue, barbarian, monk, priest) And admittedly, I haven't played PoTD so I can't speak for that. But for the first time, I'm seeing the value of a barbarian. 20 str (Aumaua) + long range weapon (so he can hit from the second row and stay out of harm's way) and he really gets through the crowds!

Haven't played the ending yet, so ignoring the spoiler. But Amon's quirps are hilarious!! "The hope is a LIE!!!" (Read: The cake is a LIE!!!)

Resolve = tank, combat wise. I've never been a fan of making my main character a tank though (since I feel the leader should kill stuff, not be a meat shield) but cool if that works for you. But if you want more dialogue options, you also need per and int, right? Why not play a back-row caster and specialize in these things?
-
Look, I know how OP feels. When rolling my first character, I also wanted a main with lots of int\per\res so my dialogue options wouldn't be limited. As it turns out... it doesn't make a big difference to how the game feels/plays, but I didn't know that the first time round... Maybe it would help if (as 4ward) said, companions could assist in dialogue. Then you could roleplay a dumb-as-bricks warrior type, but have a smart wizard in your party to back you up with brains. I think in Neverwinter Nights 2, you occasionally get an option like "leave this to so-and-so".

Yup. I didn't do that the first time, but I guess being a nice guy pays off! -
[2.03] Dragon and Absurd Immunity
Heijoushin replied to theBalthazar's question in Pillars of Eternity: Technical Support (Spoiler Warning!)
Really? The dragons also got a bunch of immunities?? I see what OP means. It's logically reasonable but.... I'm not sure how you're supposed to beat the Adra and Snow Dragons without spamming some kind of status attack....
