I was hoping for something inbetween PST and BG2. In my opinion BG2 had better game design and GUI while PST was far more hm.. philosophically interesting and I also liked the even "harder" focus on dialogue. That is not something in between, that is PST in BG2 UI and using BG2 game mechanics. They never promised that, they just said story and conversations will be more in line with PST quality than BG2.

In cRPG larping is pointless stuff you do for RP purposes that the game mechanics don't recognize. Like making sure your character eats 3 meals a day when you're playing skyrim. or dropping gold and weapons in front of a Talos shrine. It's meaningless "pretend" crap. Well they misused it. Stop using so you don't spread this disease.

I want XP to be like in Divinity: Original Sin minus XP from killing enemies. For those that didn't play, it means you get it from exploring different parts of the map, finding interesting stuff or Lore and doing quests. The point it, I want xp to come in smaller increments, not like in Gamescom video where it is nothing, nothing and then after Ogre instant Level UP.

One of the beta streamers said Hard boosts stats of enemies. I am basing it on that.

This isn't the Skyrim crowd, the gamers here will notice something like that real fast. That is the point. They will notice it and complain less than if there is 0 XP.

Just let killing creatures reward a tiny amount of XP so people have a false sense of gaining something and be done with it.

Hi, I don't have access to beta, but I been watching the streams. As a result my feedback is about things watching streams can show and I let people with beta access give feedback on all the rest :D 1. Elder Lions - Please don't give animals that are supposed to be stronger than a normal kind prefix like Elder. Elder in their case means they are weaker as they are older. They are not Vampires, Dragons or magical creatures. It might be a industry standard from MMOs or whatever but it breaks immersion and logic. Call them Alpha, Prime, Pack Leader or something else that makes more sense. 2. Harder difficulties - wasn't the talk about harder difficulty that it would only have more creatures? But now it seems Hard is also +50% more stats. That makes me sad because everyone and their grandmother has games where harder difficulty is a boost to life, damage and so on but PoE said they would put more monsters into encounters and it was unique with that. I still want that to be the only difficulty difference.

Does combat need to be slowed down?
archangel979 replied to Tartantyco's topic in Backer Beta Discussion
This sounds about right. 3 Lions surprising you should be instant death for any single human without crazy amount of buffs or magical equipment. -
That's only true if you get the quest to deal with him. If you don't then he's not an objective, and then... Hopefully in 2014 game development has progressed enough that if you kill the Ogre before getting the quest the game will recognize this you will be able to immediately tell the farmer you already killed the Ogre. Will you also get the 1500XP for entering the Ogre cave itself? Maybe you get +1500 xp for turning the quest in afterwards?

It's time to level up!
archangel979 replied to Caerdon's topic in Pillars of Eternity: Stories (Spoiler Warning!)
My vote is for "While resting" but I would put that only for difficulties above normal. For normal and below I would rather have "Outside of combat". No need to make life miserable for people new to IE style of games. Us IE veterans will be playing on harder difficulties anyways. -
In BG you didn't get much XP from random monsters anyways after a few first levels. You needed to kill A LOT of beetles to gain one level so in effect it does not really matter if they give XP or not except for those rare occasions where you lack just that tiny amount. The exception were iconic monsters like Basilisks in BG1, and in PoE I hope such monsters are always part of quests and not just standing around and waiting to be killed for no benefit. Also maybe a good way to make everyone happy is to have hunters in different towns give quests/bounty for thinning local "monster" population so while killing random beetles will not give XP, killing 10 or 15 will. The problem with these quests is that they will remind us too much of 99% of quests in different MMORPGs and we hate those

Animations
archangel979 replied to Thanes's topic in Pillars of Eternity: General Discussion (NO SPOILERS)
As someone said, main problem with animations is no proper hit animations or animations for spell effects on targets. Those are most noticeable. How someone uses a weapon or if he swings well enough will not be noticed by most people as you spend most time looking at enemy anyways to be able to react to their actions or their life going down. -
VA cast
archangel979 replied to Allbrother's topic in Pillars of Eternity: General Discussion (NO SPOILERS)
As far as VO goes, I expect at least as much as BG games had. Anything more will be a plus. -
Spell animations themselves looked good, what didn't look good was the effect of spells hitting enemy. Magic missile should either splash blood and kind of knock back enemy just a few frames, fire should have some flame effect on body of target, lightning also should go through the body, not just disappear as soon as touching enemy. IE games didn't have crazy animations but it was clear when spells would hit stuff, lightning especially with the special sound it made.

I always turn off AI when playing BG and start all combat by select the whole group and clicking attack on closest enemy and then tell casters which spells to do. That way people are always attacking someone and doing something. As soon as enemy drops, everyone not currently casting gets selected and told to attack another enemy.
-
I would like to see killing enemies still reward a tiny amount of XP, just enough so players feel they got at least something. So more of a psychological effect. Also if there are going to be random encounters a really small percentage of players might want to farm those for this tiny amount of XP and that is OK. The game gives them what they want and the rest of us will never bother with it.

Thoughts on Gamescon Stream
archangel979 replied to Pray's topic in Pillars of Eternity: General Discussion (NO SPOILERS)
The IE games had auto-attack. Actually, what they had were AI templates you could assign to characters. One of those being none. And those AI templates could be turned on and off globally for your party. So the idea of characters not attacking in the IE games was a common enough occurrence. What I'm more commenting on though is Adam's apparent lack of awareness of what was going on during the battle. Unless he was trying to get his party killed, an IE veteran should have easily been able to determine that something was going very wrong during the battle, and made the appropriate adjustments to improve his tactics. He also had his archer trying to fire in melee range. And why the hell was he playing on easy in the first place? Logical conclusion: he has no idea how to properly play the game! Or he was just nervous because he was playing live in front of 10 000 viewers and had to play fast so they get to the Ogre. -
Shadow Realms? (You've Been Chosen)
archangel979 replied to ShadySands's topic in Computer and Console
At the end there is "You must gather your party before venturing forth" This does not look a game I would play, but it will certainly have its crowd, probably people that liked DDO a lot.- 47 replies

I have long held that the IE games too were great despite D&D, not because of it. Except... the way D&D did contribute to their greatness is indirectly. The people who made it were so enthusiastic about D&D and Forgotten Realms that a lot of that enthusiasm shone through. I'm sure they wouldn't have been anywhere near as good with a mechanically better system nobody cares about. Thing is, you can have both. It's incredibly obvious by now that Obsidian are enthusiastic as mad about P:E, and P:E has what appears to be a much better system mechanically than D&D ever was. If you really want to make me swoon, Obsidian, announce a game set in the world of Malazan but with the P:E ruleset. That would be holywowYES! (Edit: also LOLwut? at the actual announcement.) Well I don't agree with you. Out of all the cRPG games using different systems that came out after BG games, none of them have the same scope or complexity (expect other D&D games like NWN and NWN2 that also featured multiclassing, prestige classes, 200 different spells, and many many different systems in one game like summoning, shapeshifting and so on; Just in different status effects you can inflict upon your enemies and them unto you, D&D beats anyone). And from what I see for now, neither will PoE. On top of that BG/NWN games supported non scripted pickpocketing, stealth and traps management. And complex crafting...
