  1. Okay, just reading these few posts, it seems clear to me, that the function of this thread is about ego, being right for the sake of being right and having fun, and not to expand each others horisonts. I like that a lot! ^_^
  2. If they're against a theme which is a part of the human experience in a roleplaying game seems it's odd. I can see why it's not always needed. In other mediums, especially big movies, romance's often only in it, because it's seemingly mandatory, which always makes it forced and in the best scenarios just irrelevant. OE should not put a romance into their games, if they feel it won't better the game or if it's a subject that they don't want to explore. But to be against such an important theme in art, because it has been done poorly in the past is unreasonable.
  3. Well, Stun I think that's an unconstructive point of view. Let's be honest. Romancing in games is still a fairly new concept, and the Casablanca of rpg's has not been made. Most romances are pretty weak, but many people enjoy them, I have enjoyed a few myself. And if they are to evolve, people like OE has to take them to the next level and break of the primitive soap concept of romances that AAA games seem to want establish as the standard.
  4. Have faith Karkarov. Someone will break it in time. =)
  5. I'm certain that OE will consider a romance in a sequel if PoE makes a lot of dough.
  6. Lie to the attittude? Get over yourself. And no, I made no assumptions of that kind. If I had done so, I wouldn't say that I would use those great looking mods on my second run to improve my experience. I don't care how people play their games, you can cheat or mod all you want, I respect that completely. I just usually refrain from it, since I want to experience the product as I got it. EDIT: Your point about the game being created with limited time and ressources is correct. But playing the vanilla product gives me joy and appreciation in relation to that, which everyone who has ever performed a complicated, creative task on a deadline should be able to relate to.
  7. I usually don't use any mods when I play games. It's kinda like going to a fine restaurant, ordering a 70$ entree and then asking for ketchup. But these look really good. I'll use some ketchup on my second run for sure. Good job guys, appreciate the hard work!
  8. I find it kinda strange that people find Bioware's romance dialog forced or formula like. In real life flirting starts pretty much the moment people meet, and romances aren't really that complicated. Relationships is a different thing, but few games ever get to them.
  9. It makes sense that duo to production limits that obsidian spends most time on the normal setting imo. I also believe that some of your frustrations Sensuki, might be related to that. You didn't get it, when I reviewed 392 after a normal run and found the combat fun and EI'sh. Well, you inspired me to go on hard for the first time in the BB. So I have done 2 runs on hard now, and I feel you. In advance it'll be fair to say that unlike normally, I tried to maximize my team with help from all the good feedback in here. I normally just play, cuz I find that kind of play breaking my immersion and general roleplaying experience. First I did one with 5 members (my normal team size), and it was HARD. So much reloading, not even trial and error, just getting that perfect initiation, so you could survive an encounter. I found myself better off with 6 members, including an insane dps'ing rouge. I found a few things I want to share about my reflections on the runs. Too high damage. When the priest healing spells are less effective than the time consumtion of the spell (you take more damage in one turn than a spell heals you and the priest can't perform any other action) it removes their value and for me distances the gameplay from the IE games. GearIt has been pointed out before, but I'll still emphasize that it's hard to get a solid understanding of the true challenge, when your gear is generic. If your bb fighter had an "ankheg" amor, he might have surivability. It is impossible to know by now, if you find strong items in game, which will significantly improve your odds on harder difficulties. CompanionsIn the BG series, I really enjoyed the special abilities of your companions. Jan's gear, Viconia magic res, Mazzy's paladin theme etc. I hope PoE continues this, and that might also factor into the overall challenge on higher difficulties. I don't read something awful, so when I read just now, that OE got few testers on harder difficulties, things started to make more sense. And hopefully this thread will help the devs to better the gaming experience for selfpunishing hard players.
  10. If we could smack a radiance and a midas on our animal companions, we would be in business!
  11. In BG2 Imoen is taken because she's casting magic missile. It's not a crime to be a mage in Athkatla, it's a crime to cast spells. Besides, why would they take you? Irenicus has just killed a bunch of cowled dudes, and he makes a deal with the cowled wizard in command to come without a fight, if she is taken too. It would be untrustworthy if the scene played out in any other way. Why would the cowled wizards even care about a mage who is clearly small time, when they're dealing with a seemingly ustoppable foe in the middle of the city?
  12. I agree wholeheartedly. When a backer like me tries to review a new patch I do it all on feels. My posts could be more helpful, if I had a better comparison than a beta version I played a month ago. Being a general optimist my feedback is probably not that useful, since I'm rather excited about the game I play. And not having the balance changes in writing, but only the general changes, makes it hard to contribute with any constructive feedback in that aspect. Being a long time Dota/HON/Dota 2 and RTS player myself, I feel that balance is indeed very important. And to boil it down, Obsidian would help themselves by helping us. A larger portion of backers, could assist with useful feedback, so Sensuki won't have to lay in so many hours in a lonely crusade.
  13. The Elder Scrolls has always been a pain for me. As much as I love the scope and the sense that alot of work has been placed into everything, I just feel, that it would be so much better to play with a party. It gets too lonely for me I suppose without the companion comments, banter and remarks on quests and everything else. Dumbed down or not, I don't think we should worry about PoE falling into the same pitfalls. The backer beta itself answers for me atleast, that point 1-5 and 7 won't be a problem. And I never saw IE games as big puzzle games anyways.
  14. Because one of the enemies used spells that instant killed you. It is a terrible example. No, it wasn't. In that fight in BG 1, you met a mage and a thief (I think). And the thief lands nearly every attack on you, no matter what ac you have squeshed out of the system. Yeah, I agree to that. Attacks deals more damage than in the IE games. But maybe, I just don't optimize my characters enough, since my encounters felt pretty good in regards to length.
  15. I'm not as invested in the details of combat as you are. You clearly have vast knowledge and more extensive IE combat experience. So I might be wrong, but I liked the number of attacks, the speed of which you killed enemies, the impact spells and abilities had alot in this patch. For me it felt more like the IE games, than any of the prior patches. And it was fun. I still think you often dies abit too fast, but then again, I think back to the BG 1 encounter in the undercity brothel. In my first few attempts at that fight, my 19 con fighter dwarf with -9 AC got destroyed in 10 seconds or so. I haven't played on hard yet, that might chance things alot.
  16. Just finished a full run on normal with a human Cipher. And I must say, that this build feels very solid. No performance issues for me. Combat feels much more IE'sh. The speed of the combat and the lenght of the encounters felt really good. I liked the overall feel of damage and skills. It is actually quite enjoyable now. The voices of the npcs are superb and the amount of VO, where it is used, is more than I expected. The new UI is far better than the old one and gives the information I need atleast. The modified talent/skill system also feels very good and the level up screens, which were a mess before, are easy to navigate. Even with the remaining bugs and balance issues, this seemed like a game in the final stages of production to me. A damn good game. Merry christmas!
  17. That's too bad. But no problem, go home and enjoy the holidays.
  18. Hey guys! I just watched update #22 on youtube. In that video Tim Cain answers a question about low int dialog. He says it will be in the game. So does anyone know if that's still on? It's at 4:25.
  19. Haha, this has turned into quite the funny thread! Other people's words are only useful to the extend, that I can quote them to further my next argument or solidify my point!
  20. Achievements are the best. I love when I'm in a good game, and suddenly a loud noise fills the room to tell me something important! Like that I have succesfully crafted stuff or something!
  21. After reading this thread, I'm pretty sure the biggest problem with engagement is, how it makes people forget their manners.
  22. Things are pretty boring nowadays. We used to have important raging about ragdoll physics and other essentials. Now, it's just one long, irrelevant harangue after another about engagement or whatever. But atleast there is still some animosity. =)
