The big question is where do they store all those huge props for the rest of the year.

What You've Done Today - But you… have elected… the way of… pain!
I used to agree with that sentiment, but as I've gotten older the cold bugs me way more than the heat. Part of it is I lost all my insulation when I started doing triathlons, and another part is all the aches and pains seems to magnify in the cold. I get why people retire to places like Palm Springs.

Man, the east coast has hurricanes and polar vortexes. I'll take my perfect weather and expensive water, thank you very much. We actually have a storm on the horizon this weekend. So we just need about 50 more of those and we will be good.

I do not think everyone should get a medal. I think everyone should have a chance to compete. In a gifted program, only the top students are even given the chance. I also don't think these game show style competitions are all that important to the educational process as a whole, but that is an entirely different can of worms.

The TV and Streaming Thread: Series 5
Hah, I used to show Firefly episodes to my students during the extra testing blocks, and the kids who spoke Mandarin and Cantonese always got a kick at how bad the Chinese was in the show.

Good Old Games still good
I kickstarted this one ages ago, but it looks like it is coming along nicely.

Hi everyone
Hi Sarex! My PS4 is gathering dust in my son's room. He prefers the PC and Switch. Honestly I can't see myself getting another console anytime soon, but who knows?

Strike Three... the 2021 Baseball Thread
Beat LA is pretty much my mantra for the rest of the playoffs, so I hope not. I also think the Giants mentally wore the Dodgers out, so my team gets a bit of credit when the Braves advance.

You are simplifying what makes a successful sports, business, or science team. It isn't just the best players playing all the time. There are going to be roles to fill, there is going to be hard work that needs to get done, and there is probably going to need to be some opportunity and luck. I don't mind the sports analogy for my classroom. But if I'm a coach and I have a roster of 35 players, it seems a lot smarter to utilize the strengths of all 35 of my players then to just focus on a few that have the most obvious strengths. It is my job to get them all across home plate, or the end zone, or in the penalty box or whatever analogy you think fits best. The San Francisco Giants won 107 games this year. They didn't have the most talented line up in the league. What they had was a massive coaching staff that worked hard to get the most out of their players, and players that understood what their strengths were. So if we want to have more success in education, we need smaller classes and more teachers. We don't need programs that exclude the students.

I'd sign off on a My Cousin Vinny movie if it was Aunt May.

It is weird that you call this a liberal sentiment. Like, is it a conservative sentiment that only some people are good enough to succeed in life? "Hey kids, your potential is limited, so just kick back and accept your lot in life."

Side note: Every one of my students is gifted and it is my job to help them tap into that. We don't need a special program. We could use smaller classes.

I tried to read the article. I really did. But it is total garbage. There are a lot of reasons gifted programs have fallen out of favor in recent decades. This guy is trying to force one data point down our throats while ignoring any others that don't fit his agenda. It is bad journalism. As an educator, gifted programs have been a mess since the beginning because they are almost always driven by parents. Trying to identify which 4th grader is destined for genius is stupid. We all learn at different rates, have different bursts, different styles, etc. Taking a small group of kids and calling them gifted puts pressure on them to maintain that, and it alienates all the others. It is a stupid idea that hasn't born fruit. Our world is not led by a bunch of kids that got into the gifted program in 4th grade back in the 80's. It most certainly is racist, but that is just another piece of data that makes it look terrible.

Shawshank is probably one of the few serious movies I could put on my list. Thinking of that also made me regret not putting Bull Durham on my list. Bunch of lollygaggers!

Sometimes the humor strikes a bit too close to home. Watching AP Bio does that for me.

Memento seems like his most fun movie. I probably should re-watch The Prestige. The 5th Element is a good choice, Sarex. I re-watch that one all the time. I actually tried to rewatch a Chris Tucker movie recently, the buddy cop flick he did with Jackie Chan. It didn't age well.

I had to google a few of KP's. Dang kids and their obscure tastes. Is Stray Dog this?

Tarantino would dominate my list if it was movie soundtracks. But I tend to prefer my violence with a bit more silliness than him.

I almost put Casino in my top ten list, which is a notch above Goodfellas for me because I've eaten at the same booth Deniro and the crew sat at in the movie. I was surprised I didn't have and Tarantino films in my list. Also we were pretty close with Evil Dead 2. 😉

Monty Python could probably squeak onto my list depending on the day, so that is our Breakfast at Tiffany's moment. Lord of the Rings is also a close one, but it is soooo long. I tried to fill my list with movies I enjoy rewatching regularly, and the LotR films are great, but they take forever. Same reason Godfather didn't make my list. You have a lot of serious movies on here. Parasite stressed my out. So did Rosemary's Baby. So did The Thing and Downfall. I watched 12 Angry Men for a film class and wrote an essay on it, so it also stresses me out. Heathers is a stressful version of a John Hughes movie. 12 Monkeys was quirky. I probably need to rewatch it sometime. The Florida Project is not one I've seen, but I think it will not be one we see eye to eye on. Army of Darkness is my most entrenched on my top list. It is firmly in 1st place there. You should watch it, but you will most likely hate it.

Hmm, that is an interesting challenge. Here are my top 10 movies, so you can avoid them: 1. Army of Darkness 2. The Goonies 3. Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade 4. Back to the Future 5. Star Wars: A New Hope 6. Elf 7. The Black Cauldron 8. Office Space 9. Die Hard 10. The Hangover Honestly though, I like most movies. I'm a pretty easy audience to please. I suppose I like action comedy more than most though.

I didn't want to like it. I went in saying there is no way they can pull off Robin Williams. He is too unique. But by the end of the clip I was just happy to have a few minutes dedicated to remembering Robin Williams and his magic.
