I don't think it was the difficulties about it - because that's where I am as well - it just sucked the joy out of the game for a few days, when I had to go to the girls house for the 3rd time and the old lady kicked me out 6 times in a row.. I just seemed so stupid and pointless from the game design point of view. The load times didn't help the problem either. I don't know.. the game just has a problem keeping me interested, some of the quest seem so "empty" that I don't really want to do them. It's like bad grinding in a mmo. The setting, the story and the overall feel of the game is pretty good - but some of the elements are so annoying that I give up and have to wait for a while to come back.. that's generally not a good sign.

Played The Wither for 10 hours or so, now it's not as good anymore.. The story kinda thins out and the quests are really boring.. To those who've played it. Does it get more fun after Vizima?

One could also be horribly dissapointed - much better to feel indifferent and then pleasently suprised if things turn out for the better, imo.

I've had to assume my boss' responsibilites for the last few work days since he's sick.. hello phawt pay bonus!

I'm currently looking for a book to read. Like a different view on historical events (a "what if" book).. Do you guys know any good ones?

Meh. First of all, the very black and white aspect of Star Wars is one of its strengths. Yes, it may seem overly simplified and forced, and it even is IMHO, but it's still the charm of the plots and the setting. As for what the Force really is, I honestly don't think we should know, because it would ruin the mystery - never did Lucas harm Star Wars as much as when he introduced midi-chlorians, because it takes away from the mystery of the force, and that's a bit sad, just as it would be a bit sad to uncover the truth of the Loch Ness monster or the Bermuda Triangle, and just as Nihilus would be a lot less scarier and interesting if we knew all about his backstory in TSL. Or to quote Stephen King in a recent article: "... nightmares exist outside of logic, and there's little fun to be had in explanations; they're antithetical to the poetry of fear." We need that scary stuff, because if you explain the force, then you unmask the dark side. And we need to keep the dark side as something we're supposed to fear. Quite obviously I wouldn't be able to explain what the force is, since no one knows for sure. Most crime books solve the crime, but never crime in general. So while I'm sure my character would learn a thing or two about The Force he could never discover the entirety of it - although that would be his goal. -Spoiler- And KOTOR 2 was about the nature of the people using The Force moreso than the nature of The Force itself imo. Darth Traya was trying to destroy it to get rid of it's influence on the universe, not discover what it was. She believed that everyone was weaker because of The Force's presence and hold. Believing it was a kind of deux ex machina for the Jedi and Sith and subsequently bereaved them of any real power. -Spoiler-

I bought both expansions because some day I might change my mind - and I wanna support Paradox, since they've made some of the most complex games I've ever played. Guess you can call it loyalty.. and yeah, I checked the mod, but it doesn't help - it needs a complete overhaul before I can play it.. or a year of trying until I get used to the graphics.
-
Understandable, but nevertheless it had Freespace 3 on the list.. which is enough to make me agree on anything! What's wrong with Freelancer? Or are you being picky and referring to the fact that technically it would be the third in the series? Freelancer was okay - but it wasn't really that great.. I wouldn't mind a third game, since I enjoyed both Starlancer and Freelancer, but it's not on my top-10 list. I agreed with your other choices and went along with FL2 because you shouldn't scoff at the prospect of an ok space-sim.

I almost want to slap you for such a silly comment... almost. Have you tried the graphics mod that overhauls quite a lot of the graphics? Supposedly it is quite good. I personally can't stand it but judging from your post you might just be crazy enough to like it. I would definitely recommend that you try it as it's easily the best of the series unless you're some kind of crazy flaming grognard who prefer to have crappy set-pieces to actual fun. I feel really bad about it - because the graphics aren't really that great in EU2 either - but I'm playing Rome by Paradox, where the graphics are ok and I really like it - it's just EU3, I really can't stand it. It's somehow insulting to my aesthetic sense. I like the gameplay (what little I've experienced) and it's seems so much deeper than it's predecessors. But still...

NWN 1 - I was so horribly dissapointed with NWN that it even affected my playthrough of Obsidian's sequel. I haven't completed Mask of The Betrayer yet - simply because of the association with NWN 1 .. KOTOR 2's ending really dissapointed me (I blame the God of evil deadlines). Civ IV - Although that's completly my own fault. I wanted the game so bad that I played it on a computer that couldn't handle it - and the frustration of not being able to play without severe lag stuck with me, so every time I try to play it now I get frustrated out of habit. Which is even more annoying cause I love the series (even III) Lionheart - It's one of those wierd games I keep going back too - the setting is so interesting that I want to play it again, but the game just sucks. My biggest disappointment was Europa Universalis III, I can't play the game for more than 3 minutes before I give up.. Normally graphics don't bother me, but they are so bad in EU3 that I really wish they'd just reused the original engine instead.. I seriously feel disgusted when I see the game..

While the very well defined Dark Vs Light is quite good - because it still allows some depth of character. In the end however it's somewhat restrictive as characters usually end up as either good, evil / fallen, redeemed or stubborn neutral. I haven't read any SW books or fanfics - so I have no idea if I'm being completly unoriginal here. But I would take an approach of looking at the history and nature of The Force and it's effect on Galactic history. From the perspective of a scholar looking for evidence on what The Force actually is, while of course being blind to it. It would be like a history book of the Star Wars universe and the mythology of Jedi/Sith, seen from the historical point of view. Looking at the effects Bane, Vader, The Mandelorian Wars etc had on "modern" Galactic history. Like some scholars today look at the effect Alexanders reign had.

Understandable, but nevertheless it had Freespace 3 on the list.. which is enough to make me agree on anything! true true.. Especially a good BG game..

true.. ALSO, by all that is holy and just in this world, reduced load times!

You should have waited for the enchanced edition, Rosb. It's supposed to have completely revamped voice acting amongst other things. Yes pixellated b00bies - I'm talking about you (technically two). I thought only the German version got a voice revamp? and the English just had updated text, animations, reduced loads times and some new missions..

I couldn't agree more!

I've just bought The Witcher and I'm pleasently suprised - it's a little wierd getting used to the combat and the voice acting is somewhat lacking most of the time.. but the setting is cool, the story is interesting and those two make up for the shortcomings of the other aspects imo. it also runs really smooth on my computer - I could only play Mass Effect in 1024*768 with the settings on medium - but the Witcher is able to play on max settings and full resolution. I'm amazed I didn't find it sooner.
-
It seems quite restrictive in movement.. Which is always annoying in these kind of games. But really I like the fact that you could work on almost any surface!

downloading now! edit: the update messed up my sounds really bad.. now all the background noices are really loud and all the dialouge and weapon sounds are extremely hard to hear.. if anyone else is having the same problem there are some tips here apparantly it's mostly realtek HD that suffers from this.. but I have a Sounblaster Live card, so it's not exclusive to that.

I've never experienced an earthquake before.. a part of me really wants to.

1. Would require you to be as far away from anyone infected as possible or at the very least in a very secure location. 2. An uncontaminated river or lake is the best source for fresh water. 3. A stash will only take you so far. You need to be able to produce food. 4. Taking the above points in consideration I would think a mountain or a big island would be the best options.

Come to think of it, we should make a short PROs vs CONs in staying in either urban or rural areas. Feel free to add/correct any points you feel are relevant. Urban Pros: Readily available food supply for the first few months. Lots of places to hide (although this counts for anyone else). Somewhat easily fortifiable positions. Lots of resources required for survival. Cons In case of widespread fire it'll be hard to contain the fire and remain safe. Lack of water supply. Food supplies are not replenishable - so long term survival becomes a challenge. It's harder to have an overview of the surrounding areas. In case of Zombie outbreak this is likely where the most inceted people will be. As the city is abandoned so is - zoos, powerplants (nuclear), gas stations, waste disposal facilities etc. all of which can present various hazards over time. Rural Pros: Food supplies can be sustained in most availabe rural areas. Both farming and husbandry. If the above criteria is met; a larger population is sustainable. Depending on location. It can be easily defended and/or easy to spot things approaching - better overview. Natural resources are most likely available. Manoeuvrability. In case of Zombie outbreak fewer people will be infected here than in the city - although people might migrate from the cities during the initial stages. Cons Depending on location. You may have a hard time defending the area and/or visibility may be challenged. Wildlife may become a serious problem (various factors). The weather can affect you more. In case of disease or injury, a wide range of medication will be harder to acquire.

I just thought of two important arguments against staying in a big city. 1. It's gonna be extremely hard to get fresh water. 2. In case of a fire, the whole city might turn into a blazing hell hole in a matter of days. Also you can't get the water you need to put it out.
