Quick Q on the "gets back up after zero-stamina" ability (Unbroken) - can this be activated if it's the last one standing in your team (or if it's a solo run) - or does 'game over' come too quickly?

Template For Character Creation: First Name: Herne Last Name: Bearsbane Appearance: Race: Human Age: about 25 winters Height: Average Weight: Average Eyes: Two (Brown) Hair: Long and possibly dreaded Facial Hair Style: Clean Shaven, Thick-Eyebrows Personality Profile: General Health: Well, he smells like a Druid, but he's in good health Deity: Will have to see which one fits a druid best. Initial Alignment: Vertical (PoE doesn't have alignments as such but he'll be closest to Chaotic Good) Profession: Woodsman Base Class & Proposed Development: Druid - specialising in Spirit-shifts - I like that Stag-form Habits/Hobbies: Likes collecting acorns for some reason. He strings them on a necklace Languages: Fluent in the calls of the wild and Glanfathan Weapon of Choice: Staves or Spears, maybe a short-bow for ranged. Background: Raised by a small group of druids to understand the necessary balance of nature. Left when he was old enough to understand the wider world. ... wait, that's boring... he left because the druid-clan were eaten by bears. ... yes, that's better - now he wants to figure out if they ever knew diddly about balance and nature or were just too dumb to stay away from bears. Goals: Oh, he wants to grow in power so he can help people (especially if they're in danger of being eaten by bears). Possible Plot-Hook Ideas and Misc Facts: He looks like my avatar. He will immediately challenge anyone who is throwing rocks at bears. He is afraid of spiders, ever since one dropped on his head as a child, and is unable to fight anyone else until all of the 8-legged vermin have been eradicated, preferably with fire.

Tim Robbins, Cleese, Rooney ... I think I would like to see this. Have not, before. It's a classic

This one seems a little non-intuitive to me; if you're having to defend against more than one attacker is seems like your likelihood of inflicting damage would actually drop unless the two opponents are getting in each other's way. I guess it must be a soul power... Its called being psycho, having killer instinct. Barbarians are those soldiers in war who get a massive excitement and adrenaline rush when faced with overwhelming adversary. When other soldiers are cowering with fear their vision jumps to 20/20 looking to inflict death. "You must only let the red rage take hold of you in the thick of battle." "I know, dad, I KNOW!! I've heard it all a thousand times!! RRAARRGGHH!!!" *ahem* Eric the Viking Flashback

Not at all - see my subsequent post that "IF that's what they meant then my point in this regard is null&void" (so the 'better and more companion writing because no-romance' IS a pro, whereas if they simply mean "no romance" then it isn't (or at least no more than "no apples") Didn't ignore PS:T - actually addressed that in subsequent post after it was brought up - but whether combat xp can be good or bad is irrelevant to my point. My only point is that "No-XYZ" isn't a pro unless it includes "No-XYZ means more ABC" Just to be clear - going on the crit-path involves you killing things and getting xp - if you literally go invisible and kill nothing but the unavoidable bosses - would you be underlevelled? (and besides - my point again is not "Kill-xp is bad therefore no kill-xp is a pro" - my point was "No-kill xp can be a pro for some because it includes the alternative objective-xp" So basically he's made up his own mind and won't accept anything unless he feels it's better. So if anyone presents anything that's objective it bears no relevance. Let's not put words in my mouth - I meant what I said, not that MY no-xyz is better because I like it Not at all - but your examples were to prove that you could get non-kill xp in BG and be ok (in some cases) - whereas my arguments (in this thread) had nothing to do with whether no-kill xp was better (though I may have mentioned that as the perception for believing that the alternative was better) but rather that "No-XYZ" is NOT the same as "No-XYZ=MoreABC so Yay!" So to be clear: "No-whatever is a Pro IF it's because there's something else there instead. No-whichever is NOT a (valid) Pro IF it is simply the lack of a feature" <- THAT's my point. Feel free to refute it, you are entitled to your opinion after all.

That's not necessarily true (wasn't true for PS:T, f'rexample). Mind, I'm all for "no combat xp" - worked well enough in Deus Ex (a game literally about shooting people) and Vampire: Bloodlines, but combat xp in itself doesn't mean a systemic need for violence. (Disregard if original sentence was sarcastic.) I was thinking of the way it was in BG/BG2 - levelling usually depended on fights - sure, it CAN be done other ways too and if combat xp is ALSO in other games that don't depend on it that's fine. - but that's my point. The 'game doesn't contain combat-xp' PRO is referring to the superior (IMO) alternative that HAS been implemented rather than simply the lack of combat-xp. Saying "Game does not contain apples" when the game also doesn't contain oranges, isn't really a 'pro' except from the minor-POV of not having to ignore the apples at the shop. If the 'No romance' pro people meant "No romance means more time and budget spent on developing well-fleshed out companions" then my point is null&void and I apologise.

Not different at all. What other examples do you need where people have put things in the Pro argument that aren't in the game? No dlc where a lot of people are happy with? Why is it okay to agree on one and not the other and use the argument, if it's not in the game then it's not a Pro? Personally, I think if you can keep a turd (whatever that turd may be) out of a game where other companies do keep a turd in, then that's a Pro. And Obsidian are known for their superior writing so we can expect more 'quality' interactive party relationships. That's great in my book. if you want an alternative, then there you have it. Quality interaction with party members. Who mentioned DLC? 'No DLC' is ALSO a good thing - as the alternative is the expansion pack (rather than piecemeal). No romance? - again, as I said, IF the alternative is something better then yes, that's a pro - in and of itself though, no. It IS different from 'no combat xp' as that's something that can't be avoided if it's in game and also changes the approach to challenges. It's a change in game focus and tactics. BG2 had combat xp and romances - don't want romance? say 'no' (albeit, as mentioned, you need to say it harshly). Don't want combat xp? Sneak past the encounters and be horribly underleveled for the boss you can't avoid. (for the record, no romance is fine with me - I was merely addressing that it's not the same thing to say "game does not contain something" v. "game doesn't contain xyz which has been redesigned/replaced with an alternative system that is better")
-
That's a terrible argument. So when posters in this thread say on the Pro side, No combat xp because they dislike it. Then it doesn't really count as a Pro? eg. 'doesn't really count as a "Pro" to say "does not have something I dislike". "Lack of combat xp" isn't a "feature" to be excited about, and "lack of combat xp" isn't either. It's just something that's not there.' I think it's slightly different - "lack of combat xp" is more about "quest xp and multiple equally valid ways to complete certain quests without losing xp" - ie, it's more about what IS there instead and the consequences thereof. So yeah, "lack of combat XP" is a negative way of stating what's really meant. If there IS combat XP, then you MUST slaughter left, right and centre to be levelled enough. "Lack of romance" isn't something that they've replaced with an alternative that has the potential to be better (YMMV). (Unless they HAVE initiated a superior 'party-relationship' system.)

Party will largely depend on the joinable NPCs for the first playthrough so it depends on who's available, at what point in the game (Sorry Alora) and who I like. Probably something like this PC: Druid Sagani: Ranger Cadegund: Priest Edeir: Rogue Orlan Dude: Cipher Aumaua: (Barbarian? Chanter?) If there is such a companion Of course, that may vary depending on which companions are actually available and when. 2nd playthrough will probably see a PC-Rogue or Ranger and the unused companions plus adventurer's hall (unless previously used companion had awesome quest that bears repeating so soon). So basically: I dunno really
-
Yeah, that's why I think any romance should be mostly dialogue (and ok, you can buy your beloved a flower or a broadsword engraved with "for slicing down any b******s that'd try to hurt you"). The dialogue for doing a given quest might vary slightly, but the quests should still be doable (unless it really makes no sense - like a quest to find a wedding planner - but that'd fall under dumb-writing ) ^this Having said that, lack of romance in PoE won't affect my game (though as someone mentioned above, if there's good human/elf/orlan relationship emotional content, that'd be better than simply a 'choose your own adventure lover' )
-
I think it's to simulate the "I'm out of control and running on adrenaline" side of things - the barbarian doesn't notice how badly he's hurt until he stops - then he may find that he's got nothing left, rather than saying "Oh, my stamina is a bit low, I'd better pull back for tactical reasons." I think it adds an interesting element to using the ability - it's powerful but you lose some control.

Great update - as always, the classes sound like fun to play. Probably won't go with a fighter PC but will get one from AH (unless there's a companion?) I like the portrait too - in-profile may not show as much as 3/4 face but it's good to have variety in that regard too.
-
I see what you did there --- Ok, here's a try: Pros: All the classes look like they have fun aspects to their play so there'll be replay value True-RTwP combat that sounds well-b....brought into being Interesting Lore and attention to world-building Attributes are all useful for all classes so varied builds of the same class are possible. It simply IS (in the sense of they've finally made a new isometric tactical rpg with what's likely to be a great story with great characters) Cons: (no major gripes, but these I'd have done differently) Attributes don't work intuitively for all classes (e.g. intelligence governing AOE for Barbarians)(but RTFM and you're good to go) So far we haven't seen any truly unique Druid-Spiritshift forms with also use outside of combat. (Mostly just were-mammals I think so far) Bottomless inventory - sorry, just prefer the IE style of making some choices. Not having a companion for each class (though I understand the budgeting reasons) It's not installed on my PC right now

Force-attacking?
Silent Winter replied to Meepalasheep's topic in Pillars of Eternity: Stories (Spoiler Warning!)
I think it was certain scripted events where you had the option of taking prisoners but could still fight to the death. There *might* be unkillable important NPCs but I also recall them saying they were considering alternatives ('Biff the Understudy' but perhaps less jokey) -
^This would be cool - an 'epic enchantment' for your weapon/armour of choice. So you could quest for the recipe (perhaps needing to find the scroll and the ingredients) but apply it according to your character's needs.

^Me too - I prefer that the expansion adds variety and replayability to the main game. -

^I guess it'll depend on how they do the expansion (TOTSC-style or TOB or some mix of the 2) -

I thought they tweaked the difficulty of the end-game when TOTSC was installed - can't remember where I read that though -
Except exploring those areas only rewarded you with mindless combat from the boring trash mobs. BG itself is just as linear as Icewind Dale but requires you to leave the tracks to engage in the mindless combat with the boring trash mobs because there simply isn't enough quest experience to level your party. I disagree (mostly) - there were a fair few mini-quests (Ulcaster Dungeon, Firewine, Melicamp etc) that arose from wandering off the main quest path. And the rewards were also more than the fighting and xp (items, weapons, armour, the sense of fulfillment that comes from helping a chicken in need).

Yeah - I'd put textures as harder than modelling (and UV-mapping the model as harder than that - but that's just down to my own level of experience).

Haha. I was about to joke about seeing that new video footage for that upcoming book. Then I remembered, that kind of really happens. They're called movies. I've actually seen a few 'video footage' trailers for books now (I think they call them 'atmosphere trailers' and are generally rips of a few different movies - search for 'Brandon Sanderson Mistborn' on youtube as an example). Wow, I seem to have nothing on-topic to contribute in this thread beyond my initial "Great update, thanks "

I understand why they did it (i.e., to avoid punishing players who like to switch party composition), but I thought it was a lazy way of doing it. P:E's solution sounds much better. If I know they're getting stuff done while I'm out pursuing the main quest, leveling up makes sense. My biggest problem with the joinable-NPCs in NWN2 OC was the lack of choice: "You WILL take the paladin now (even if you're evil)." etc Given that they were going to force certain NPCs on your party (even late game), there would need to be auto-xp (not auto-levelling, you still did that yourself beyond the first joining levels) to avoid crippling your party in an area where you can't just go away and combat-grind (which would be boring anyway). Thankfully, we won't have such in PoE. Still, being able to set them to tasks while you're gone is a good idea. (I hope we can still choose their level-up skills though)

Generally: Slander is spoken, libel is written. More specifically: Libel is recorded in some more permanent format that can be read/heard again and again, whereas slander is temporary and can only be repeated through hearsay. (So spoken on a DVD or Youtube would still count as libel, whereas writing it in the air with a sparkler at some festival party would still be slander). --- Thanks for the info Brandon
