Puzzles in crpgs
Silent Winter replied to Hiro Protagonist II's topic in Pillars of Eternity: Stories (Spoiler Warning!)
You're rather carelessly assuming that those railings aren't trapped as well, u_u.. LOL, that'd be awesome - give a nice easy path avoiding the traps, that's undetectably and lethally trapped -
^I'm using it on the laptop for general purpose: old-gaming, office, 3D-art, internet, etc In terms of using the programs - no different from xp. Installing is the only gotcha - if possible, do NOT install anything to 'Program Files' as it involves administrator privileges all the time (not just at install). The other changes are mostly either cosmetic or what services run in the background (many of which I switch off as unnecessary).

^sure - but 'slave' may be auto-interpreted by the game to mean working the oars on a galley or pulling stone slabs to buid the temple - in other words, you might pick something with one idea in mind but get another. I did hear that the questions asked about your past by the NPCs in the opening will further define your backstory if you so choose (or you can choose to remain a blank slate). I think this is a great idea. Should allow us to pick 'killed slave-master to escape' or 'bought freedom through hard-work' and wotnot.

Wrapping my Brain around Druids
Silent Winter replied to Zansatsu's topic in Pillars of Eternity: Stories (Spoiler Warning!)
^ I also thought the spiritshift ability was 3 times per rest and/or would increase in number like the other skills - hope so. -
I was still on xp-32 on a 7 year old machine .... until the mobo died a few months back. RAM was the only drawback, and that only at render-times. Games I was playing were of the BG-NWN2 range - graphics card (9600gt) was all that was pushed a little for the latter) Going to have to get a win-7 disc when I finally get enough money to build a new machine (been doing part-time work in addition to my job so I'm hoping it'll be before PoE is released). Got win-7 on the new laptop (whose fore-runner also died this year) and it's a relatively small jump from xp to that (don't fancy win-8 ) Edit: must remember that closing a bracket after an '8' leads to a ' '

'Pledge' is indeed promise - but not promise to make an agreement. The Kickstarter backers were also 'pledges' - promises to give money - they didn't give the money until later. The same terminology was used in the 'Backers' portal -( 'Backers' not 'Customers' incidentally) - your pledge was merely delivered instantly. Obsidian will be giving you beta access and whatever else you think you bought - but I don't recall seeing a promise on their side as to when it would be delivered.

BIG HEAD mode is in
Silent Winter replied to Labadal's topic in Pillars of Eternity: General Discussion (NO SPOILERS)
great - we can add it to the top of this other large-ish snowball and make a Big-Head snowman -
Just to remove the extremity from this post - I read and understand (99% of the time anyway) what Lephys says (though I often see people misunderstanding what he's written so it's obviously not perfect, and also see him misunderstanding others). I do think he's genuinely trying to explain himself though since he often does get misunderstood. Perhaps in turn he should also seek clarification on points written by others, but then we don't always know when we've misunderstood because we've understood it in the wrong way. *Look behind you, a 3 headed monkey*

In your opinion - In mine it looks great and I want it zoomed in. I was just thinking of it from the POV that some people want the isometric angle to see what it looks like in game but others want it like it is now. Taking the time to change it to fixed isometric would be a waste, when it'd just please some people but annoy others.

But none of the heads therein are large enough to accomodate the message ... maybe this one? -
If it's an option, I wouldn't mind, but I much prefer the zoomed in and face on for character creation screen. (Though as said earlier, customisation of avatar should come after portrait selection, which in turn should come after gender, class and culture selection, but that's not a biggie). Edit: Having more camera control in CC would fix this - allow us to rotate in more than just one plane and zoom camera - you can then view it how you like.

^I'm 99.999999% certain we get to control companion level-ups - there would be pitchforks and torches (not the battery kind) if it were not so. It's also been stated that no NPCs are unkillable (possibly going to change for critical NPCs but not at the moment) - however, you'll get bystanders turning hostile, running away and calling the guard - basically like in IE games. There's no kill-xp, and I'm not sure that the average villager would carry any loot (or any loot worth having) but if your charater is a homicidal maniac, go nuts.

BIG HEAD mode is in
Silent Winter replied to Labadal's topic in Pillars of Eternity: General Discussion (NO SPOILERS)
no, it's just for the giggles Merely another example of the Headonistic lifestyle being led at Obsidian. Brings new meaning to the Skuldyr - the Dire-Skull! Ok, I'm heading off now. -
^sure, and I understand. I'm not saying kill-xp is bad. I just don't think it's arbitrary in this case - they've made a design decision that each creature's death individually isn't an xp gain. Only more complex objectives that may or may not involve those same deaths. (Or if they just arbitrarily assign random xp gain here and there and the 'objectives' are inconsistent or don't make sense, it will turn out to have been a mistake)

But they made no attempt to match them up - this was a quick demo showing facial hair and picking from a very limted number (2-3) of available portraits. Final game will have more portraits, more hairstyles than shown for the 3D model and the ability to import portraits. (It's still not ideal as we won't have the option of creating fat/skinny/tall/short variations but nothing's perfect). Someone else mentioned that it'd be better to choose your portrait before setting physical appearance - that'd be the way to go IMO. That does look good

Sure, that happens all the time in RPGs. It's a hilariously illogical flaw in the system. In BG2, for example, a Rogue can become a better archer by.... disarming traps. Is that your idea of an accurate representation.... of anything? Thing is - with per-kill XP - killing things also makes your rogue better at disarming traps, and killing things with a sword can also make any character better at archery. So in the end, it's all abstraction / gamey. I'm fine with this. And whilst I didn't mind the per-kill xp in BG, I'm looking forward to this objective system because it handles different playstyles at the same time. Want to fight through? -> XP Want to sneak through? -> XP I'll probably try a combination approach. Only time will tell if this actually works out, but I'm confident it'll provide me with more replay value as I try different ways to resolve things without worrying about xp gain.

Overflowing with money.
Silent Winter replied to Karranthain's topic in Pillars of Eternity: Stories (Spoiler Warning!)
^ a better solution there might be to make the stronghold a source of income as well as a drain. Those investing in the stronghold will get more from taxes or those stronghold-based missions or whatever, but then need more for its upkeep/building/wages/etc. That way, simple adventuring money could be balanced for simple adventuring. ... not that adventuring is ever simple -
^I brought up the barbarian aristocrat in another thread - totally gonna role-play that on my 2nd playthrough now. Have to quote Namutree for this comment: Edit: here's the original (had trouble searching for it as I'd mis-spelt 'aristocratic' as 'arisrocratic' http://forums.obsidian.net/topic/66501-giantbomb-quicklook-on-the-24th/?p=1470190 Silent Winter, What is best in life?
