I have gotten 2 blue screens of death in reference to an ati.something something file. That kind of thing is almost invariably driver or bios related wouldn't you say. I'm going to install vista and run on it a while to see if it re occurs.

How much was your budget? Bearing in mind that we have a very high VAT and import costs it would probably be a lot less in the US, comparisons won't be accurate. I spent somewhere around 1400 USD, a whole lot of that went on the P190 case.

I would have gotten a HD4870 but it cost almost twice as much as my 4580 at the time due to shortages. It's about 20-25% faster, give or take. I still haven't played anything the single 4850 could'nt handle at high, or very high settings.

I have a question though, do ancient PCI cards fit in the new PCI express 2 motherboards, is it just a few slots that are PCI express or are there legacy options. We are about to shift from analog to digital broadcast format, it will happen sometime next year, and there still remains questions about what chip will be needed for reception, I have a PCI card with analog input signal and chips that are in all likelyhood incompatibe with furture broadcast formats. It would be smarter to wait till after the shift to buy a new one.

I tried lavasoft's free firewall, but it failed install. There is currently a zonealarm closed beta for 64 bit I read somewhere. Any thoughts ? Software firewalls really aren't one of the things I can afford to spend money on. I'm almost afraid to go anywhere using the included windows firewall.

I got Assassin's Creed and realized the controls were designed for console. I haven't got a controller, maybe I'll pick it up again when I do. Also the tutorial was needlessly lengthy, although I can't really say anything about the game as I haven't gotten into it.

Prebuilt systems often cut corners somewhere to save on purchase costs, on the other hand those that build them usually know more about the components than your average enthusiast. Just remember that whatever blurb they put next to it, 'media pc', 'gamer rig', etc, it means nothing, look at the specs and then research them a little, ask around.

There are warranties on the components, with some 'unless you's, granted.

Hellboy, the golden army. Pretty straigthforward action thingie. Lots of awesome designs and weird creatures. Suffers a bit from Hellboy looking goofy rather than cool. The dimensions are wrong, how can they be anything else when you try to stick Ron Pearlman in a hellboy suit. Abraham is cool though.

Core 7 is comming out probably late fall, if you can wait that long the older mobos and processors will be dirt cheap. Great opportunity for getting the most out of your money.

It's very innocent, perhaps a la Calvin and Hobbes, but it's so well made you don't care that it's 'for kids'. It's a fantasy story about a war involving dragons and lost heirs, but mostly you just fall in love with the Bone cousins. You can get the whole series compacted on the cheap, or just buy one of the first compilations to see if it's for you.

I'm a bit strange in that for a comic to interest me there has to be something about the linework that draws me in. Mike Mignola did the excellent Hellboy series, no fault of his it was turned into a kid's movie with Ron Pearlman, not half bad movie either, and he did something called Fafred and the Gray Mouser, and a novel called Ironwolf and the fires of the revolution. I notice a lot of vintage stuff on people's lists. I guess you haven't been keeping up either. I mean I like Miller's Daredevil as much as the next guy, but it's pretty old, and showing it too. If you haven't already, get Jeff Smith's Bone. It's hilarious and awesome all at the same time.

This is my budget system from the long running build thread. Processor Core 2 Duo 3 Ghz . E8400 6 MB Board. Asus Maximus Formula, republic of gamers edition. Ram 2x 2048 MB Dual Mushkin Xtreme. DUAL RAM / DDR II SDRAM / PC2-8500CL5 / 1066 MHz GFX Saphire HD 4850 Sound Soundmax extreme fx, this is from the makers of the pretty unimpressive onboard solutions, but this particular card is quite excellent, comparable to much more expensive name brand cards. I have a 4850 and it runs very hot, but it\s rated to be hot, no artifacts although I actually burned my skin on it while installing a soundcard. When I get the other one for crossfire I might consider doing that, as well as putting another case fan in near the cards. Although messing around with tiny components on a circuit board with a screwdriver, that sounds pretty terrifying.

So one last update, after I discovered that all the fans in the case can be regulated from the outside, and set the CPU fan lower. The thing runs very silent, the quietest system I have ever had, you would have to look at the front LEDS to even know it was on. I can then flick the fans to a higher setting when doing an extended gaming session. I can heartily recommend this case. One small worry is that the maximus formula northbridge runs very hot, it hovers around 42-45 degrees, making it the hottest component in the system by more than 10 degrees. Maybe the big passive coolers means it doesn't benefit as directly from the four case fans.

I miss the bots, they are somehow more easy to accept than someone trying to plug something with no relevance whatsoever in his first post.

Ahh brilliant, I found it, in a sub menu of a sub menu, that made a huge difference in noise set to autoadjust performance mode. >_

So I couldn\t wait and I bought the arctic cooler off him, and well, it kinda destroys the whole concept of big slow moving fans on the mobo . It is louder than the stock cooler, but cheap, I can get another cooler if I decide its too annoying. It shows 23 degrees in the bios and 15 degrees in windows. Sadly it does not appear that maximus formula has fan RPM controls. Or can set a target CPU temperature, I guess this is because it\s basically an enthusiast oc board, and not concerned with noise.

According to what I have been able to find out, you are all wrong. No only is 65 degrees not high, it is in fact the default target temperature set by most 775 socket motherboards. What that means is that if the cpu is below 65 degrees the temperature control unit will automatically reduce the fan speed untill it reaches 65 to reduce noise. This fits perfectly with what I have observed if, as Bokshi says, the cpu is under full load while observed in the bios and affected by power saving mechanisms while in windows. You might think it sounds like a lot, but thats just an overclocker\s subjective opinion. The processor is rated to run at 65. It all depends on the exact stepping and model of the CPU. This is an overclocked example of my processor from a a core 2 temperature listing at Tom\s hardware forums.
