Druids
Kane_Severance replied to Calmar's topic in Pillars of Eternity: General Discussion (NO SPOILERS)
I don't know, they along with the other casters have more excuse than the armor users. Forsworn armor from Skyrim comes to mind for druid armor. My chanter may want revealing robes since she's not wearing them for protection. -
Druids
Kane_Severance replied to Calmar's topic in Pillars of Eternity: General Discussion (NO SPOILERS)
I prefer the celtic version of druids: primal magic, rituals, elemental in nature. I like that better than the voice of the trees version in current games. -
Experience Inequality
Kane_Severance replied to Rahkir's topic in Pillars of Eternity: Stories (Spoiler Warning!)
More difficult skill checks really should offer better rewards. If you've created a character that invested very heavily in intelligence and specific skills, you've had to make sacrifices in other areas. You should have occasion to show off your expertise in dialog or quest solutions and be rewarded for doing so. I think Fallout 2 provided some good examples of this, specifically in Vault City. Having a very high Science skill let you have some unique insights and solutions to some of the problems people had. Edit: Also, when you make rewards the same across the board, everything starts to feel the same. One solution would be to make rewards differ in other ways than just xp. Maybe one solution provides extra income or an item, another might provide a large xp bonus but piss off the NPC to the point they aren't willing to deal with you further. Trying too hard to make everything perfectly balanced severely limits replayability because it means your choices matter less.- 35 replies

I hope that OE is planning on offering some of the items in the kickstarter at a later date. There are many things I would consider buying at some point that were beyond what I was feasably able to afford at the moment. Specifically I'm referring to things like the Developers' commentary, strategy guide and almanac. I REALLY want the almanac at some point.

I have been looking around and I've seen references to the graphic that was used to depict the mega dungeon as the number of supporters grew throughout the kickstarter campaign. It supposedly has some giant figure. I haven't been able to find it on the kickstarter pages or the PE homepage. Can someone provide a link, post the image or tell me where to look?

Grimoire Speculation and Ideas
Kane_Severance replied to Osvir's topic in Pillars of Eternity: Stories (Spoiler Warning!)
I'd like to see grimoires add some kind of bonus like they held on to a remnant of the previous user's soul. If you find a powerful lich's grimoire maybe it boosts necromancy. One grimoire may make any illusion spell prepared in it more believable. Another may cause fire spells to use hellfire instead. -
The Monk Class
Kane_Severance replied to Aedelric's topic in Pillars of Eternity: Stories (Spoiler Warning!)
I'd be fine with Eastern monks if they got a Jade Empire style treatment. The problem with monks in most RPGs is they are homogenous and boring. You use less equipment, get fewer upgrades and only have one way to do your thing. Jade Empire had different martial styles which all felt very different. There's also no reason for an eastern monk not to have equipment upgrades. Many kung-fu movies talk about famed martial artists that use swords, spears, staves, claws, rings and hammers. Many of the weapons are relics with amazing backstory. Those kind of things are woefully missing in most rpgs that include monks. I don't want to see another D&D monk, but I think Eastern monks could be done better in RPGs. -
Pet Speculation

Oob, the space hedge-hog. -
It's been mentioned, but if you lose too many of the stock companions, just create your own at the adventurer's guild. They won't have the personality of the pre-written companions, but that would be a consequence of making your followers too unhappy. If the companions are all just happy and homogeneous they won't have much personality to begin with.

God, I hope they don't go pure historical piece equipment. I realize that many fantasy games out there make ridiculous looking armor and weapons. That said, this game is not set in medieval Europe. It's an entirely different world. Lets see some unique designs. Stuff can be creative and new without looking impractical or unreal. Edited for clarity.

Great reference. I like the idea of gods competing for followers. -
Gambling
Kane_Severance replied to Nines's topic in Pillars of Eternity: General Discussion (NO SPOILERS)
Pity. I rather enjoyed playing pazaak. I think the issue was less that he did not think the mini-games were fun, but that they did not contribute enough to the game and considering the unfinished state the game was released in, those resources (man-hours and money) could have been spent in better places. -
Gambling
Kane_Severance replied to Nines's topic in Pillars of Eternity: General Discussion (NO SPOILERS)
If done right, these are fun things. MCA has already mentioned that he considers all the mini-games in KOTOR2 one of the mistakes made in development. If it's something with pre-existing rules like existing card games, then it's not too difficult to implement. Something with a completely new set of rules is a risk as well as a bigger time investment. I'm not totally against such a thing because I've greatly enjoyed things like that in games that implement it effectively. If it's not done right, however, it's just a waste of resources. -
Religion
Kane_Severance replied to Kane_Severance's topic in Pillars of Eternity: General Discussion (NO SPOILERS)
I think they should stick to subjective morality. No one would worship a god who is malevolent against all humanity, but someone who's a burglar or a cheat may worship a god of lies and secrets. An assassin or a noble plotting such may worship a god of murder and violent death. Gods that seek to bring downfall to humanity make little sense, but those that represent advancing your own goals at the expense of others would certainly find followers. It's the difference between mustache twirling caricature evil and more realistic self advancement "evil". I'm against the first and fine with the second in RPGs. -
Gameplay or Story?
Kane_Severance replied to Sensuki's topic in Pillars of Eternity: General Discussion (NO SPOILERS)
I voted for story. PST has some of the worst combat ever in a CRPG, but it is one of my favorite, most memorable games. -
Religion
Kane_Severance replied to Kane_Severance's topic in Pillars of Eternity: General Discussion (NO SPOILERS)
I don't think every dialogue should care about your religion, but encounters with priests, temples and such most certainly should. -
I really hope you can have some choice as to how your stronghold develops. An arcanist may want a wizards tower, libraries, summoning circles; a priest may prefer temples and statues to their dieties; a fighter might prefer training halls and armories; and a rogue may want trapped vaults, secret rooms and taverns. Maybe give a few options as to what kind of stronghold you want (fort, thieves guild, wizards tower, temple) or allow the stronghold to choose between different buildings. Maybe not allowing you to build all of them in one go.

Religion
Kane_Severance replied to Kane_Severance's topic in Pillars of Eternity: General Discussion (NO SPOILERS)
Yeah, I mentioned the fact that the FR pantheon is really to numerous to do justice to in a game, but PE does not have that problem. What I meant by "great selection" was that these gods were varied with decent write ups and flavor, but they were hollow because in game you only saw 5% of them represented. If your character is a priest or a paladin then faith is a major part of your character. Other characters can be devout as well, but for a priest's religion not to come into play at all in a game is unfathomable. -
I hope if they add them it won't be formulaic like the more recent Bioware romances. My favorite game romance was probably Viconia. She wasn't falling over for the PC from the get go. She was difficult to please and didn't like being pandered to. She was an extremely interesting character and when you won her over you honestly felt you did so by gaining her interest and respect, rather than her just waiting to fall for the PC if he's nice to her. I like romances when they feel like part of the story and the partners feel like they have personalities. You should feel like the PC should develop a rapport with the romantic interest. It should not be simply: ask all the questions you can -> pick all the nice responses -> do the npc side quest -> romance fade to black. Also, once you've established a romantic relationship dialog should reflect that. They shouldn't have the same basic cardboard responses that are available if you didn't have any kind of relationship.

One of the things that has bugged me about the recent games is the lack of importance your faith has on the story. In NWN2, for example, you had a great selection of Forgotten Realms deities to choose from, all with great flavor and background. Once you created your character, however, that choice no longer mattered other than mechanically. Mysteries of Westgate offered some unique options if you worshiped Shar, but on the whole it was fairly neglected. Granted the Forgotten Realms pantheon was a bit overpopulated to have unique questlines for all of those deities, but Project Eternity won't have nearly as many (I hope). I felt it was a shame that a cleric of Mystra was treated no differently than a cleric of Lathander. I hope that if you choose a faith in character creation, that has some affect on how the world reacts to you, especially if you're a priest of that religion. It'd also be nice to allow you to start without a faith, then perhaps convert to one or even between religions in game through dialog. I would love to roleplay a jaded warrior who finds faith, or a priest of one faith being swayed or corrupted to a different belief system. That may be difficult to implement, but at the very least, I hope if we encounter a temple or followers of our faith that they recognize and respond to that. Even more interesting would be if a diametrically opposed or rival faith responded negatively to our chosen deity. Edit: To be clear, I don't think the game needs to revolve around faith. I just think, as the developers have put it, if you give us the choice, make it meaningful. Even an atheist/agnostic should be reacted to differently in the game. Temples may see them as opportunities to gain new followers.
