As I said earlier, the problem isnt that the occasional word has a translation that doesnt hold the same "feeling" as the english word. Its our whole language that lacks feeling. Modern Swedish is a very very casual language that doesnt lend itself to American styled drama, it just sounds ridiculous. If we do a simile(is that the word?) using photgraphy to describe the differance in the two languages. Instead of a phrase we have a scene of a hat lying on a deserted street. The English photo would be taken with elaborate studio equipment, lit dramaticly and taken from a suggestive angle as to charge the picture with as much meaning as possible The Swedish picture would be a quick snapshot taken head-on with the cheapest camera available. So english lends itself very well to hi-flying drama while swedish excels at down and dirty realism. This is a disadvantage when playing games like D&D or Star Wars. If someone was to make an RPG set in an everyday office enviroment, Swedish would be the shiznit ..or if it was very angsty and philosophic where the Ingemar Bergman styled swedish could be used. Now in many ways Im wrong here. Im actually more wrong than right but this is what it feels like to me at the moment.

Fable was pretty much complete crap. Not one ounce of originality Flat and uninteresting main character Generic story All quests are the same (escort character X to point Y sound familiar?) No roleplaying at all The only real game element, the combat, was boring and definently not challenging in any way. Just button mashing. Its actually much more of a simulation(or bad parody) of an RPG. It tries to hide itself using a lot of fancy peripherals like being able to change hairstyles or having townspeople whisper you chosen nickname when you pass them. Boring and uninteresting. DO NOT BUY FABLE!

I hate ammo restrictions, I got very annoyed with Battlefield 2 for only giving you 5 magasines at best when the average IRL soldier packs 8-12. How am I suppose to give covering fire if I run out of ammo after 10 seconds? (Ok, I know they designed the machinegunner class especially for that but its annoying nontheless) Yeh, but falls under the law of feedback which is basic gamedesign 101... and computer programs in general. You HAVE to let the user know that his clicking has an effect on his enviroment ALL THE TIME. From Manny Calavera saying "No, I dont want to mess up my blade" when you tell him to use his scythe on something he cant use it on, to a link on this forum turning orange when you hold your pointer over it.

As this thread has passed unto the dreaded 2nd page I must inseminate it with new life and what better way is there than a bit of boobs&blood? Its Lady Death time! ) I would like to refer back to out previous comic thread where I showed samples of the "artist directives" for the comic and how it very specificly speaks against the penciller drawing gratuitous breast, bum and crotch shots. A rule that is broken often and with great enthusiasm " As I laid my eyes upon the "Lady Death - The Wicked" preview issue, it can be no doubt that it represents a landmark inthe Lady D comic line.. every single page breaks atleast 2 of these rules.. one even going so far as to depict our Ladys thonged "full moon" from a frog perspective, thus succeeding in breaking the rule to never depict Lady D from below as it is "unflattering" That page shall not be displayed here, instead you will recieve this teaser that only breaks 3/3 rules with its multi-angled view of the pale ones "assets"

I think "puzzles"(in the widest sense of the word) can be very entertaining if they are done right, but not many developers know how to do that. Some tips: Puzzles are inherently frustrating, that is the nature of a puzzle. This must be countered. The player should always be able to figure out the solution by himself using relatively simple logic and common sense. If you encounter a broken vase, use the glue on it to put it back together again etc. NOT 'use the chewing gum on the statue to get the bicycle pump and use that to..' Trial-and-error must die. It is not fun for the player to click randomly on a puzzle or use every item in his inventory on an object because there is no other way to solve the puzzle. Puzzles must make sense within the context of the game/story. Solving a murder mystery to free an innocent NPC is good, encountering a random complex "floor tile" puzzle when trying to open a fridge isnt. Puzzles should make the players feel smart when solving them, not dumb because theyre so hard only the dev who made it knows how to solve it. Has he ever had it? The basic concept behind all Lionhead games is to make a completely bland and generic genre game and then add and hype small peripheral details that really have no impact on the game at large. B&W was a boring RTS and Fable was an equally boring HacknSlash action-adventure (no, it didnt even qualify as an RPG since it didnt have any roleplaying, just simple yes/no options)

I played all the big adventure games(and many small ones too) in the early ninties and the puzzles werent fun. They ranged from frustrating to game-stopping and there was no internet to help you. And honestly, most of them required zero brainpower since they were either completely random or so profoundly illogic that trial-and-error was the only viable approach.

I rember at my school, a friend of mine sent out a HC newsletter that had a logo that said "all capitalists must burn" and this dumb friggin kid got one and reported it as a death threat. There was much fuss about it. The solution:

The issue is not that we have no translation for certain words, the problem is that the Swedish language is unable to convey the mood and emotion in a suspension-of-disbelief manner. We have actually taken the silly habit of saying certain things in english but it sounds ridiculous.

D&D -how does wounding really work?
Kaftan Barlast replied to Kaftan Barlast's topic in Pen-and-Paper Gaming
I sucessfully persuaded the GM (who is getting better and better actually) to nerf the overpowered characters by means of a Goblin horde who nicked all our phat items. Unfortunantly, he let the 'wounding' player keep her weapon. ..and theres no way I could GM a Call of Cthulhu campaign in swedish. The players would be laughing themselves silly instead of being frightened om ni har h -
Thats because you jump the reply button without reading what he was actually saying. If you give buyers a carrot like a big box that includes a tshirt, 24page colour booklet with concept art, a DVD with making-of video, a bag of licorice shaped likes Feargus's head etc. that CANT be digitized and shared as a torrent.. some people will buy the pack to get the goodies

You CANT stop piracy. The hackers are smarter, and always will be smarter than the suits who come up with expensive schemes that are either effortlessly circumvented(safedisc) or backfire(SONY rootkit) The best thing to do is actually to take the pain and get on with it. Purchasing an elaborate protection system will cost you money without actually selling more games.

C++ for complete and utter beginners
Kaftan Barlast replied to Kaftan Barlast's topic in Developers' Corner
Manty thanks everyone, but I took a look at several websites and Ive come to te conclusion that it is too complex for me to have the time and energy to get into right now on top of what we are already doing. I should spend more time with MAX and Zbrush instead. -
MEETING A WOMAN, COURSE 101: So you want to meet a woman? This is what you need to do in simple steps: Place yourself in a location where there are drunk females Get reasonably drunk yourself Just go with the flow You may laugh, but the fact is that this is the way that 95% of all Swedish couples meet.

The end is the beginning is the end.
Kaftan Barlast replied to Darth Jebus's topic in Computer and Console
You can argue all you want about technology or the "unique opportunities" that consoles are supposed to have but the only real reason for this "decline of the PC" is that the major players MS/Sony will do everything to sell as many consoles as possible. And the best way to do that is to fool people into thinking that the PC is dying as a gaming machine which is complete and utter rubbish. The comedy of this is that Sony have taken some heavy financial losses lately and that the 360 wont meet the expected sales figures. If anything, its the consoles that are in trouble -
After much test playing and GMing english RPGs I have realised that playing these games in Swedish severly limits the experience. Now youre thinking that its a question of us not being able to understand the rules etc. but it isnt. The thing is that: It is impossible to convey certain moods and emotions with cerdibility in our language. It just cant be done. Its most noticeable in Star Wars, even a basic thing like "use the force" will translate to something along the lines of "make use of the (slang for 'hydroelectric powerplant') / mechanical force that can be expressed in newton metres etc." it just sounds stupid. Our language has two modes, casual and Ingemar Bergman. Neither of them is fit for roleplaying.

Yeah, it does. It's the part about uneven yokes. I would dig it out right now, but I have the flu and am trying to relax. It is also a very logical part as was proved my my Aunt's marriage/family. <{POST_SNAPBACK}> Oh, but we're not talking marriage here are we? We are talking having a relationship with someone you love. And a religion that prevents people who love eachother from being together is a poopie religion
