Satan: "Welcome, Pipyui! I'm glad you made it down, we've prepared a special place to stay just for you!" Me: "Oh wow! Eh, but you know, I was just thinking that, well, maybe this world has no need for 'a place to stay,' so I'll just erase that for you." *zap* Satan: "You! What ... power! What cruelty! I ... can't let you threaten my throne - you must die here!" Me: "Oh, you like your throne, do you? Hmmmmm, it'd be a shame if something were to ... happen to it." *zap* Satan: "What ... How ... ? You are evil! A devil - no, worse! To call you Satan would only sugar-coat your dreaded majesty! Pipyui, I ... I abscond to your will. I cannot claim such capacity for suffering." Me: "Hm, this is a nice Hell you've got here. Perhaps I'll just-" Satan: "Oh, shut up."

I'm certainly hoping for the console, more games need one in my opinion. Cheat codes are fun too, if you can do some crazy things with them that wouldn't otherwise make it into the game. I'm not particularly arachnophobic myself, so I'm more interested to see mods that add monsters rather than remove them. And just as a counterpoint to gfted1, I'll be sure to make a mod first thing that shall do nothing except remove all campsites from the game (maybe I'll give you a health potion. One health potion).

Update #69: Pillars of Eternity
Pipyui replied to BAdler's topic in Pillars of Eternity: Announcements & News
Yeah, all of the character animations are alpha and will be receiving more polish later in development. Fantastic! The video was great, but as others have said, combat animation needs considerable polish. I feel like I would flinch a little if I had multiple fireballs hurled at me, while also being struck by lightning. Just a little, though.- 488 replies

After careful analyis of your views on art, I've produced an image that should spark your imagination. I'm being snarky yes, but I hope also to be hitting somewhere close to truth here.

Twin Elms Fan Art from Chris Bischoff

Yes, but it's also almost certainly bloom (a whole lot of bloom). Thank you. I don't want to play the bloom game anymore. But do you fear it might look odd with the panning camera if not coming from map boundaries?- 38 replies

Eh, I agree that bloom is often overused, but I do think it adds to an image when used sparingly (for bright light sources and sharp reflections). HDR is even better, though. As rjshae says, it's mostly pointless for a 2D prerendered environment without an abstraction of sun movement (except to brighten/darken the image, as I remember this works). If spell effects, torches and the like use bloom (as we've seen overemphasized in a screenshot p. 20), which is a postprocessing effect, the environment likely uses it too. Anyway, I'm not particularly concerned about bloom - so long as it isn't anywhere near as overwhelming as that screeny; I'm more interested in the other lighting effects that can be painted in like lightrays.- 38 replies

I don't think hotkey binding options usually extend to dialogue selection. If it does though, I would be very pleased to be able to use my numpad.

I was just considering this. Does anybody know if PE will include lighting effects like bloom/HDR or lightrays? I don't think lightrays or other effects would be impossible as an overlay of the 2D environment, the real trick is just in getting it to look natural even as the camera pans. If the rays come from above camera or from map boundaries, I think it could be managed; maybe have the lightray effect overlay pan a little slower than the environment for depth. Edit: I know there'll be bloom - I just remembered from a spell effect screenshot - and I suppose that it should also apply onto the environment, but can anyone verify?- 38 replies

What if random encounters were introduced in the fashion of the "adventure panels" (You see a waterfall before a murky pool. Do you 1) Poke around the pool with a stick. 2) ... ) Usually, then, you could ignore the scenario if you were so inclined. The trouble here is you would need either a big pool of scenario cards, rare encounters, or some random element (There is a cavern before you, with three mouths ...) I don't know, just throwing something out there. -
Update 68 Camp-out thread
Pipyui replied to Sensuki's topic in Pillars of Eternity: General Discussion (NO SPOILERS)
I know it feels like the backer portal and all has been teased for ages now, but I suspect that they really are ready to launch it this time. If "withheld until Thanksgiving's end so staff would be on hand to iron out wrinkles at launch" is an excuse, then it is a reasonable one. Despite my pessimistic nature, I'm fairly confident this next update will bring, at the very least, our backer portal. Of course, an extension of Murphy's Law might say that the probability of bad things happening increases with the confidence that bad things will not happen, so I might have caught myself in a catch-22 here. -
I went for DAO history. I liked having introductions that varied from race and class, and sometimes having those histories coming back to us in the main storyline. As for effect on story, I like to see it brought up where appropriate, but not all too frequently, to be honest. If nobles often talk down to me because I was born a peasant, that's alright, but anything less general shouldn't need be brought up in conversation too regularly. "Hello, hobo!" "Heaven's smiles, sir. So you're a veteran of the Kilban War?" "Ah yes, you see back in the day ..." Stick to dialogue poking passive reference at your PC's race, status, religion, whathaveyou. The more specific elements regarding events of my history should certainly pop up now and again to haunt me, but don't need to follow me around constantly. I prefer to define my character or the evolution of my character by virtue of the game itself, and presumably the character I roleplay is going to be defined by history and the better part of society by his/her actions in it as well.

Update 68 Camp-out thread

Ghost stories? Alright, I'll give it a crack. I stood stock still in the doorway. Something was certainly wrong - no tv hum, not the tick of a clock, the cat didn't greet my return with a rub of the feet like usual, and in the dim light I could see the silhouette of my wife at the end of the hall. Why are the lights out? I should have left then, I should have called out, but I had a routine to follow and no inclination of letting irrational fears make a fool of me. But make a fool of me they did, for I was drawn into the preternatural silence and made not a peep to anounce my presence. She still stood at the end of the hall with nary a movement, and with my eyes adjusting I could see that she faced away from me. This was getting all to surreal, and finally I had to break the atmosphere. I set my coat on the hanger, and dropped my keys with what might have been a crashing thunder - but the woman in the hall didn't so much as twitch. Ok, you may have noticed that I'm not so certain that this is my wife at this point. I tell myself everything's alright, that she's making an ass of me, and goddamnit it's working. I'm not foolhardy though, and I approach with all of the stealth I can manage given my heart pounding in my ears. I'm just behind her now, and as I reach for her shoulder, the statue turns its countenance slightly my way. "Hello honey. I'm glad you're home." She sounds somber, flat, but her voice washes over me like a cool wind. "Cathy! You had me worried for a minute. Is something wrong? Why are you standing in the dark?" Her head turns further. No, something is definitely wrong. "Hey honey, can I ask you something?" This isn't my wife. This isn't my wife. Her neck is turned far, and if my imagination isn't tricking me, too far. The grin on her face is cruel and malign. I must get out of here. I can't hear any more! "You!" My voice wavers. "Who are you? What do you want?" Why did I have to ask? Run damnit! "Do you mind," No! "Do you mind terribly," Enough! Stop! "If my parents stay for the Thanksgiving?" My legs found themselves. I ran from that place. From that building. From that life. I have no love, no family - just a poor bachelor celebrating Thanksgiving at Denny's. -
He's not quite talking about resolution, but pixel density. I have a 1080p 7" tablet that would show a UI itty-bitty-like, whereas if I played on my likewise 1080p HD TV things would be a whole lot different. The resolution is the same on both, but the pixel density is considerably different - text for example would need take up many many pixels on my tablet for it to be big enough to read, but not so on my TV. Do I remember correctly that Windows will let you change effective DPI settings on a per-application basis, or is that just my WINE emulator? I'll try this Thanksgiving break. A scalable UI would be nice anyway, but I'm not getting my hopes up. PE won't be running on tablets or anything, and those who play on big TVs are a very small group; monitors are far and away the biggest target, and in this age they're fairly equivalent in DPI (I think).

I like to see the mechanics, technology, concept art, screenshots, and only so much as you might see in a trailer after that (with a little gameplay footage). I'm very pleased that Obsidian is keeping us in their development loop, and giving us a voice in the process. So far they've been good in not telling us the story or too much lore, and I don't feel the game has been spoiled to me any more than it has been teased.

Loooooong questlines
Pipyui replied to SophosTheWise's topic in Pillars of Eternity: General Discussion (NO SPOILERS)
In a similar vein, sometimes I like those quests that just sit on the back burner while you adventure around. In another thread way back there was talk of accumulating a creature compendium or somesuch. In Beyond Good and Evil, I really enjoyed photographing the world's creatures. It doesn't of course need to be "something something creatures," just something a little more fun and dynamic than simple collection quests that rewards an attention to detail and provides a quick and regular reprieve from the usual tedium of running back and forth. -
The littlest events
Pipyui replied to Auxilius's topic in Pillars of Eternity: General Discussion (NO SPOILERS)
Aww, I like tea time with Minsc. It helps fill that void where real friends are sorely lacking. Nah but really, I do like the idle banter of NPCs. Even if it doesn't advance the story, I like to imagine the world my PC inhabits is a little organic instead of filled with cardboard setpieces. Honestly, for me, I appreciate the atmosphere of a setting as much as the game's story itself. If the devs have the time and resources to fill and round it out, all the better to me. -
World Map Travel
Pipyui replied to Shadowless's topic in Pillars of Eternity: Stories (Spoiler Warning!)
I like the sentiment, but putting time-sensitive content into something like map travel seems like an especially bad idea to me. There are too many factors involved in enforcing time limits that aren't event-driven to make it necessary to include faster-but-riskier travel (event-driven as in time is measured by a sequence of events, where you may do A and B, but not C, as opposed to a less discrete measure like a typical timer). As much as I like the idea of road/crossroad travel, I can't see it as being particularly practical without time-trial events, and event-driven timers wouldn't (shouldn't) be affected by it either. -
World Map Travel

I actually think Skyrim addressed this very well with the horse carts. They could be found outside of every major city and would take you to another city for a small fee. The trip was instantaneous, so the carts served absolutely no purpose to those inclined to fast-travel. For weirdos like me on the other hand, I used the carts exclusively if I wished to fast-travel. If I couldn't be bothered to adventure to the nearest city, or from any city to a cavern, I wasn't much of an adventurer at all. -
And if the gates of Hades may bar my path I shall not cower nor flee For I have withstood of heaven's wrath and the games of devils without a plea, Though haunted by comrades by and by Whose souls follow still in my wake I will never falter in my step Till my own Death deign to take, Through harshest desert and coldest wind I can not find truest rest Til that day comes when I can relinquish the sword Having finished my sacred quest I hate poetry. And don't give me lip about meter or rhyme; I'm a programmer, damnit!
