  1. Just don't expect to be able to do much modding right at the beginning - from what we are hearing, we don't really expect Obsidian to provide anything like a full toolset - just information on file formats and how to add content. It will take a while for the community to develop some of the necessary tools. However, with luck and a bit of help, there is a chance that some tools might be ready at game launch, but it is far too early to tell now. Let's wait a year or so - then we should have a better idea.
  2. I think many of us expect the game to have good replay value - be able to play it through multiple times, and perhaps select different options that will have an effect on how the main story unfolds. We could have mutually incompatoble quests or storylines (you can do A or B, but not both), or perhaps just the selection of different companions will make the story different if you play the game again. However, just what are people hoping for regarding replayability?
  3. So, when is the order going to close its doors to new members? When the Paypal page closes?
  4. I really, really hope the developers don't waste time and resources on something like this.
  5. I did spend $1000 - the chance to design an NPC was pretty much irresistible. I would have taken the $5000 inn/tavern if it had been available, but all the slots were already taken (and I failed to notice when they reised the number from 3 to 5), So, Obsidian will just get my $1000 - well, $1033, actually...
  6. Has anything been said regarding when we can expect to see the final Kickstarter number (after subtraicting failed pledges and such), or when the Paypal dotation site will be closed, so we can have a final, final total number? Also, has anything been said regarding when we can expect the forum badges to show up? My guess would be in a few weeks - it takes time to process tens of thousands of pledges and PayƐal "donations", but it would be nice to have some "official" estimate. Until then, we can do little but wait patiently.
  7. What about day/night changes - if you stay in the same area long enough, will the light levels change (sunset/sunrise) ? I haven't seen that mentioned.
  8. My guess is that if you want to create a guy standing in a bar, grumbling about his spouse, they would probably be happy to allow that ... If you have some NPC that will fit into a quest they have planned anyhow, they will be happy as well. If, however, you want your NPC to be a major one, someone the player will return to over and over, with massive amounts of dialogue.....uhm, I obviously cannot speak for the devs, but I think you had better have a REALLY good story in that case.....basically, they have said "within reason", so be reasonable.
  9. Wasn't it just that annoying show-stopping bug somewhere in the middle? You had to apply a patch to be able to complete the game, IIRC.
  10. For an interesting twist - have a romance develop between two of the companions....and the player can possibly influence that development somehow.
  11. OK, folks, this person (pointing at PIPBoy3000 above) did some incredible mods for various games in the past - Dreamcatcher (NWN) is one of my all-time favourites, so...Obsidian, if you really want to support modding for PE, you really should consider adding him to to any (short) list of people you give early access to game info. I'm really happy to see you here, by the way....
  12. I don't like the idea in general, and most certainly not regarding the main story line. I don't play games like this on the hardest combat setting anyhow - to me the whole point of the game is to enjoy the story, not the combat challenges....they are typically just a necessary evil to move the story along. So, if there were some aspects - even just optional side quests - that were only available on the "harder" settings, I might even be slightly annoyed. I am perfectly fine with rewards and loot being better at the harder settings, but the story experience MUST be the same.
  13. The $3.500.000 goal is looking pretty likely by now. Kicktraq http://www.kicktraq.com/projects/obsidian/project-eternity/#chart-exp-projection now predicts $3.3M-$3.6M in total - which would be enough to surpass Double Fine (need $3,336,372 for that), and with (or possibly even without) an additional $100.000 or so from Paypal, the total should be very comfortably above $3.5M. The second big city is almost ours.
  14. I really don't care whether a game offers romances or not. I am, however, going to make a prediction or two (or three). #1 There will be posts about romances (for or against) on the forum for the next few years. #2 The developers will get sick and tired of being asked about this subject. #3 Romances will be one of the things some modders will change - and if there is a romance option for a companion, someone will release a mod making him/her/them bisexual (if they are not already) within 6 month's of the game being released. ...and then people will complain about that too.
  15. My favourite was the possibility of allowing you to develop your character in mutually exclusive ways - that is, you could anvance in the tech field, but beome unable to handle magic or vice versa. That's a prime example of a meaningful choice, with extensive changes on the gameplay, and iit really increases replayability. Of course, many other games have something similar - typically something like factions - you join or assist one group and some other group will turn hostile, or at least less willing to assist you or whatever. I am pretty confident we will get something along those lines in PE.
  16. Quite apart from the technical issues with implementing MP, there is the annoying problem that MP and RP don't really work well together. Consider for example NPC interactions, with complex conversation trees and multiple possible outcomes. You can let one (lead) player take charge of the conversation, but that is not much fun for the other players - unless they like just to be dragged along to provide muscle during combat encounters. If you allow multiple players to participate in a conversation, you end up with a really messy situation. No, MP worls fine in games where there is no real RP, and no multiple outcome interactions - games like WoW, and such. But in a real, story-heavy RPG? No, forget it. I am really happy that Obsidian is not going to compromise a great (I hope) SP game by adding MP support.
  17. Exactly! I wish the console questions and requests would go away, but I am pretty sure that we will be seeing posts like "I want this game for <console>", "Why hasn't this been posted to <console> yet?" or "It's so easy to port game to <console>, so when is Obsidian going to do it" until the game is released...and beyond that. Ah, well....
  18. I really don't see why Obsidian would want to enforce a NDA on beta users - quite the contrary - beta users distributing screenshots and gameplay videos would just be "free" advertising from Obsidian's perspective. NDAs would make sense in other circumstances - if Obsidian was to give some community members access to file format info before the game is released, for example.
  19. Given the background and history of the mega-dungeon, it really does not make much sense to me to have a city ther....bit it would be kind of fun, though.
  20. I am in the (enviable) position of having a bit of spare cash at the moment, so I went for $1033. (NPC design is just irresistible to me, but the remaining $33 is the Obsidian T-shirt and the Obsidian Order). I would have been sorely tempted to go for the $5000 tavern/inn design, but that was closed already when I first heard about PE.
  21. OK, just added $33 - $25 for the Obsidian T-shirt, and $8 for the Obsidian Order. So, could I please become "Deranged Toolsmith of the Obsidian Order"?
  22. Riddles can be unfair/annoying to players whose primary language is something other than the game language itself. P:E is only going to be translated to a few languages, and there will be quite a few players who only speak English as a second or third language.
  23. I'm one of those who have been playing various pen'n'paper RPGs for a long time (over 25 years), using a a large number of rule systems and an even larger number of different worlds. Something new is always welcome, and I was thinking it might be interesting to adapt the Project Eternity game for pen'n'paper gaming. Obsidian will basically be providing a ready-made world, with geography, backstory and lore - the game races and classes are reasonably familiar, yet sufficiently different to provide a "new" experience. Now, the character stats, combat and spell system in the game can probably be adapted with relative ease for dice-based gaming, and then you would have all you need for gaming in a brand-new world...well, except the stories, but that is the gamemaster's task anyhow. Of course, I have no idea if Obsidian has any intention to to produce something for this purpose - probably not, as the potential market might be too small, but perhaps they might be willing to support a community-based project of this type. Am I the only one who would be interested in something like this?
  24. The Kickstarter total (excluding Paypal) is now approaching $3M - which means PE has already passed Wasteland 2 ($2,933,252), making it the second most successful Kickstarted game already. In order to reach the #1 spot it would have to beat Doble Fine Adventure and raise at least $3,336,372. Assuming additionally around $100.000 through Paypal, the project would still be $63,628 short of the $3.5M goal, but that can probably be reached by keeping the Paypal option open for a few weeks more. So, is $3,336,372 a realistic goal? Unfortunately it is a bit doubtful, as it would require an average of $5700/hour for the remaining time, and while I would love to see that happening, I have some doubts the final spike will be big enough. Still, one can hope.
  25. I guess it would make sense to have the levels tiers with "physical" objects close down within a few months, but I don't see a reason why the "digital-only" tiers should not be available until a much later point, perhaps until the beta release...
