i just found a way to make DnD based games easier without touching the difficulty slider... the trick can even be used in BG2 to kill irenicus without him being able to lift a finger and it is not even an exploit but creative use of an item... namelly the scroll of magic protection! this scroll comes in very limited supply (like 2 or 3 in the entire game) and the target of it, becomes imune to all magic while at the same time he cannot cast any magic himself. so you use the scroll on the enemy wizard instead of yourself. all his defenses go down, he can no longer cast spells and it cannot be removed. also he gets no save against it and it is not affected by magic resistance because it is a defensive spell. so you use the scroll on the enemy mage and he is locked out of the battle. when you finish off the rest, you can just cut him down effortlessly

A force move order would be good, whereby troops took the most direct route to an objective, but micro is all part of CoH. If you force moved, especially with the true-sight system, your troops will probably blunder into a machinegun or a lurking Panzer. However, you can stack up orders for units, hit shift + order when toggling them. For example, you can order a unit to move to 'A' vault wall 'B' then take green cover at point 'C' simply by holding down shift. This is what I tend to do, especially with opening units (if I play Soviets, say, I usually send an engineer to cap by shift-clicking then deploy my first three conscripts to cap in cover likewise). So try some shift / click and see if that helps. i know i can use shift another thing is that i cant make squads interact using the icons on the top left. i want to take a squad of conscripts and merge it with some guards that are missing 3 people... i cant click on the conscript icon then use merge on the guard icon and have them do it... i have to select the conscripts, choose merge, and then locate the guards on the map to click on them its a time consuming process that could have been easily made a one click order the game itself is good, but some things in it have needlessly complicated and time wasting procedures to be done, when they could have easily be done with a single click and leave the extra time to actually make strategic and tactical decisions about the battle

Strengths and flaws?
teknoman2 replied to amycus89's topic in Pillars of Eternity: Stories (Spoiler Warning!)
you have 8 points you need 2 points to get the smart perk, you can get 2 extra points if you choose the dumb perk you can use 2 points to get the eagle eye perk, or you can get 2 points by getting the blind perk you can spend 4 points to get the military training perk or you can gain 4 points by getting the unfit for combat perk etc. in all cases however you cant have both as they are mutually exclusive so you spend points on beneficial perks, but if you want more, you have to compromize by taking detrimental perks to add points -
playing "evil"
teknoman2 replied to Michael_Galt's topic in Pillars of Eternity: Stories (Spoiler Warning!)
Your logic is sound only as long as the ideology remains "pure", the matter is that there is a gap between ideological meaning and belief. People are driven by belief, they wove their ego around a belief system so that it supersedes their needs but it doesn't suppress them. Said needs are only displaced and projected onto the belief system. Since there isn't a separation of the ego and the superego perpetuating the latter is an act borne out of the same selfish desires that drive us. For true believer an affront to their belief system is worse than an attack on their own lives. Also, within their own logic Hitler, Mao, and the other examples you provided are sane. They are only regarded as such due to demonizing and media control. or to put it simply, the follower of something, is more fanatical about it than it's creator ever could be -
thing is, that most mmos do have a sense of complete stagnation the point is not balance, it is to differentiate classes in more aspects than just their combat skills. let me put it this way. i play GW2, i have 4 characters, each has 2 of the 8 crafting skills and i get their levels up 5 for each at a time. that allows me to farm the materials and have self made gear for all every 5 levels (crafted gear is in 5lv increments for those who dont know about the game). i do not need the rest of the players of the game, unless i plan to participate in group exclusive events like dungeons. now if certain non combat related stuff were class based the thing would change. if only warriors could craft melee weapons, only guardians could craft heavy armor, only rangers could craft bows and so on, including that no class could gather materials that were not relevant to it's crafting skill, no player could become self suficient about his gear. it could also be used in dungeons: the engineer could operate a machine that cleared a path that avoided enemies. a thief could disarm an alarm so that no new enemies will spawn and so on

the thing i dislike about company of heroes, is the lack of certain automations for the controls... this makes it a micromanagement nightmare (and also the fact that i cant customize the controls) for example i want to move a squad to a position. they can jump a fence or go around the building to get there. if i do not give them the order to jump the fence and then the order to go to the destination, they will go around the building

speaking of mantle, has anyone of you played diablo 2 using glide back in the day? it was like playing a different game compared to how it looked in direct x
-
so, company of heroes 2. it is much like warhammer 40k: dawn of war (since it is made by the same guys), however it has larger amounts of troops and requires a ridiculous amount of micro management. certain automations like sending the troops on a cover point and they choose their positioning based on free space and enemy direction to maximize the cover would be welcome to lessen the load on the microing or at least tactical pause, since you often need to give 10 different orders to 10 different squads at the same time and if you dont you lose because they cant get in position in time but despite that i like it so far

just finished Shadow Warrior... funny one liners, endless amount of references to old FPS, fairly good story and the only game with more crazy 360 degree shooting is serious sam. also it lasted a lot more than the average shooter of the last decade now i think i ll start company of heroes 2 or dawn of war 2

well Chris said himself that he is tired of making a frankenstein's monster out of the games just to make them fit for pads. so yes the game will not be on console for that would require a large amount of cutting and stitching parts that do not fit for the pad

well, as i said in another forum, i got BF3 and the next time i get a BF will be when DICE decides to hire competent staff. or even better when EA stops being the publisher

It's not a bug, the Beholder or somebody cast a time spell when the volcano exploded and time has gotten all tangled up in that vicinity. As I remember what you do is go through the room and over the safe bits of cooled lava to uncover the mystery of what happened then, appearing back at the beginning multiple times until everything is solved. Then you can proceed. Long time since I last played however. i got the impression it was Sseth that granted the inquisitor's wish for a chance to fix the mess he caused, so the place is looped until someone stops him. the problem is, that i did everything possible to do the first time i got back in time, but i cant do anything anymore... just go around aimlessly from island to island

i just finished Alan Wake and started Metro Last Light. i still havent finished Icewind Dale 2, because im blocked by (probably) a bug. let me tell you the situation im in, maybe someone can help me with it. i arrived at dragon's eye, killed all the snakes and reached the lava room. there i found everything dead and at the end i met a beholder that i killed. leaving the area, i found myself back in it but apparently one day before it was destroyed with everyone still alive. now im stuck in the place because i cant leave. i can only go back to Kuldahar where nobody has anything new to say

Turn-Based or Real Time
teknoman2 replied to Legionary666's topic in Pillars of Eternity: Stories (Spoiler Warning!)
a RTwP game, gives you a limited number of choices per character that you need to manage at the same time. the turn based can go for unlimited numbers, because you dont need to worry about the action of other characters when you do something with one to make an example. in IWD2 you can cast fire storm with the priest and acid storm with the wizard, however you need to manage the movement of the fighter so he does not end up walking in the rain (and he will if you have his autoattack on). on the other hand, in a TB game you can cast these spells and do much more stuff that would be risky in a RT game, because you dont worry about a party member doing something without you telling him in short there is no really better system, they are different and each has it's good points and it's problems -
it is a problem with many rpg. of course with Firkraag, you knew what you were up against so you could try but failure was expected. the real problem lies in non expecting a situation and having no means to react to it in real time, even with pause. a recent example from my IWD2 playthrough, was the battle against the lost followers. you are told that the ancient sword of a paladin, lies in a tomb near Kuldahar and that if you aproach with the pommel jewel it will come out of the ground and so far is fine. however nobody tells you that the ghosts of the 6 insanelly powerful evil people he killed will come with the sword. so when they appear, you have no time to cast a buff, get in defensive formation or anything except to try to pick them off one at a time with little chance of success, since all of them have damage resistance to most damage types. the only thing you can do is lose, load and this time buff up before you dig up the sword

in the end it all depends on the game. dark souls is unplayable without a controller, because the port just sucks. Assassin's Creed or Castlevania can be played fine with M+K but are easier to handle with the controller. Starcraft, League of Legends, Dota, Baldur's Gate and so on just cant be played with a controller. some people simply refuse to realise this

compromises is the key word here. you need to make it work with 2 sticks and 10 buttons, so what would that mean for a game like this? the entire gameplay is striped to the most basic stuff to couteract the pad's inability for precision, and most controls become automatic. and that beats the point of even having tactical combat in the game, or other gameplay elements that require precision controls i have nothing against consoles and their players, but sacrificing a game's potential for pad compatibility just sucks.

This. I'd like to be able to use my X360 controller on my pc for games. you can... it just doesnt fit with every game. this one in particular cant be played with a controller... it's not possible to do it properly without compromising the gameplay

playing "evil"
teknoman2 replied to Michael_Galt's topic in Pillars of Eternity: Stories (Spoiler Warning!)
It's a whole branch story arc, one of the 3. Your protagonist's persona changes depending on your choices (kinda like DA2 and AP) and if you have enough "jerk points" by a certain point, you'll have an option to betray your companions and join "bad guys". Afterwords you are going to lead an army and battle your former companions. You can spare them or literally slagther them all. Long story short, there are more options after that and if you take completely "evil" approach, you are going to be dictator "president for life type" of the unified empire. But you do not absolutely have to if you do not want to. There are total 40 possible endings, accounting for all possibilities. Growlanser 4 is one of the best at choice-and-consequence type games. Pity western developers do not pay much attention to japanese stuff. that's a rare thing for a jrpg. all i played so far had a railroad plot -

teknoman2 replied to Michael_Galt's topic in Pillars of Eternity: Stories (Spoiler Warning!)
Well, there are some japanese RPGs like Growlancer 4 where you can do exactly that. is that the plot or an option though? because in a proper RPG, you should have the option to fight against the evil empire or join up and maybe even go for the throne -
Save scumming
teknoman2 replied to HardRains's topic in Pillars of Eternity: Stories (Spoiler Warning!)
Exactly. One of the good things about hard fights is that you don't win it first time and many times more. I don't see a reason why I should re-complete larger part of game than necessary if I firstly don't estimate the fight well of find extremely hard opponent, e. g. checkpoint system. Thats EXACTLY why I stopped visiting any RPG related forums years ago. God thank you for normal people use the internet as well. most normal people on the internet forgot the acid arrows or the toches and cant kill the trolls that are everywhere, so they get suffocated. fortunatelly in this forum we have lots of high level wizards that can blow trolls away with fireballs or melf's acid arrow or even cloudkills for extreme cases. so far we had no need for acid fog or rain -
playing "evil"
teknoman2 replied to Michael_Galt's topic in Pillars of Eternity: Stories (Spoiler Warning!)
the problem with "evil" play style is that it is often punishing for the player. in most IE games it was impossible to actually be evil (IWD 1 + 2) or there was no point to it (BG 1 + 2) as being good had all the benefits and evil had only disadvantages. the only exception was torment in other games like ME or DAO, you were the hero. you could be superman or deadpool in your aproach, but at the end of the day you were saving the world. to be honest except for new vegas, i dont think i ve seen a game that allowed you to be the scheeming shady guy who can weasel his way to the throne of an empire. -

analogies connect known facts with fictionals to make understanding easier. it is not necessary to make the fiction similar to reality, but explaining that the fictional *this* is like the real *that* is needed to make you understand what the writer means
