Minigames
LordCrash replied to DAWUSS's topic in Pillars of Eternity: General Discussion (NO SPOILERS)
I hope not its not a casual RPG. Minigames have nothing to do with casual.... -
Which RPG games to buy (GOG sale)?
LordCrash replied to The_Chosen_One's topic in Computer and Console
Take them all like I did. 9 isometric classics for around 30 bucks, that's great. And because of the climbing savings for each added game in the promo it's not really worth to take less than 9. Try it on your own on gog (I think 7 games are even cheaper than 6 games because of the climbing savings....)..... -
Minigames
LordCrash replied to DAWUSS's topic in Pillars of Eternity: General Discussion (NO SPOILERS)
Minigames can be fun and atmospheric if they respond to character skills. I wouldn't mind if I see some of those minigames in the game later: gambling, tavern games, drinking contests (alsways great for atmosphere) fistfighting (I always love arena games where I could become champion) perhaps some "magic battle" (would be something new?) lockpicking (why not if it's only available for chars with the according perk) puzzling (would be nice if we could get some real puzzles) -
I don't know why this whole romance thing is so important to people. It's only another dialogue option and people who don't like romances can simply ignore it. It's basically a gameplay decision which should be made by Obsidian if it fits right in the game. In my opinion there are many open points concering gameplay and design which are more important than the question if there should be a romance dialogue option or not.....

This question actually points out an interesting ambiguity. The $65 option says "Previous reward tier + BOX VERSION OF PROJECT ETERNITY." The previous reward tier is now clearly the $50 one which includes the map and other digital goodies so people who don't scroll down will be expecting them. On the other hand, the graphics for the $65 tier don't have the "digital fun pack" picture. I would assume the text is correct, mostly because adding the extra digital content to the $65 tier costs them nothing and they probably don't want people who would otherwise pay $65 to vacillate between that and the $50 option. However, this could definitely use some clarification. Everything is clearly stated in the "Rewards" section on the main Project site on Kickstarter. Just have a look at the graphics for each single tier.

DLC vs Expansion Packs
LordCrash replied to Intoxicated_Ant's topic in Pillars of Eternity: General Discussion (NO SPOILERS)
None of both. I would prefer good support of the game and bugfixing and then - if the game was sucessful and runs smooth - a real successor. I would rather wait two years for a successor of great scale than consuming DLCs every two months or expansion packs every 6 months.- 139 replies

I'll choose the 'DRM option' because I really like the Steam platform. When it's done downloading it's ready to play, I can uninstall and install with a few simple clicks and my friends are on Steam as well - which makes MP games easier. Ah, awesome. Thank you. Exactly what I was wanting to hear. Easy management of updates is another possible reason. I want to doubt that. Especially when it comes to mod-support. I still remember GTA 4. Many mods didn't work with the newest patch but I didn't have a choice to play without it because my Steam version installed the latest patches automatically. So (I confess) I got a second pirated GTA4 with the right game version to play all the great patches available. It would be good patch management if Steam would let me choose whether I want to install a new patch or not. The automatic system isn't quite satisfiying.

If you don't mind me asking, why exactly would you still go for the Steam version when there is a DRM free option? They want to give the people different options which is a good think if you ask me. First they prefered Steam because some people like it because of its achievement and cloud save systems and because it's already very popular and many people have nearly their complete game collection on Steam. Personally I like the idea of having 2 digital copies. One on steam with achievements and cloud saves for the first playthrough and a backup one from gog.com which I can play even in 10 years or later and which I can install on my laptop without internet access.

Piracy cannot be prevented with DRM! That's a simple fact and I don't know why people always want to discuss about it. Every (major) game on Steam of the last 2 or 3 years was cracked the day it was released on Steam or perhaps the day after. There is no protection at all against piracy with Steam. CD Projekt (the owner of gog.com) realized that fact and decided to promote Witcher 2 DRM-free on gog.com. Surely Witcher 2 was pirated (a lot for sure) but it wasn't the DRM-free gog.com version which was available on the internet, it was the securom-protected retail version! So why investing in DRM? CD Projekt even confirmed that the DRM measures slowed down the game and cost a lot to implement them. So they decided to rather care about their actual customers than care about the pirates. They even offered all owners of Steam and retail versions to get another DRM-free gog.com version for free as backup. And even if Steam clearly abandons all DRM measures for Project Eternity my game is still bound to my steam client. I'm not able to play it without the client. That's not what I call "property" and I want to own the game I buy. So when I have to decide whether I choose Steam or gog.com I would take the latter because I need its service only for downloading the content. After that I can do what I want with the data! You see the difference?

Majority of the backers come from those tires, but only 49,45% of funding comes from those tiers. And to compare about 35% (shipping or add on not included) of the funding comes from funders who have selected reward tier $140 or higher. Add-ons are included because Kickstarter shows the pledged money and not the rewarded money. If you pledge for example 80$ + 60$ for more keys the complete 140$ will be counted by Kickstarter.
-
I think it would be a good idea to give people the opportunity to take part in the beta when they pledged a minimum of 80$. It would be quite an incentive for backers to raise their pledge to a minimum of 80$ (for digital-only users) or 100$ (for box-version users). 140$ is too much to be an incentive for many users I fear.

Thank you guys for offering us the chance to play a real new CRPG! And the partnrship between Obsidian (Kickstarter = free of publisher constraints) and CD Projekt (gog.com = DRM free and customer friendly) could be the new holy grail of PC role play gaming!

Hell, please NO! Only in children's books spells are really chanted. In most stories/fantasy novels with a little bit more "complex" magical background there is no certain chant or riddle for spells because magic is more a question of mind (and soul) and not a question of words which could be learned from books. So please give us some "mature" and complex magic!

Death
LordCrash replied to Monte Carlo's topic in Pillars of Eternity: General Discussion (NO SPOILERS)
I agree with this. I have an additional thought as well. When exploring a dungeon, the party comes across a particularly tough encounter. You win, but you sustain a few loses. After looting, you go back to town and heal. Afterwards, you go back into the dungeon two or three days later in game time and continue right where you left off. This always bugged me. Why doesn't the dungeon repopulate? Why are the traps not reset? Wouldn't the enemy be using the time since you left to resurrect their dead and bolster their defenses? I think that if the party should be allowed to resurrect and heal at an inn mid-dungeon dive, then the enemies should too. Unless the dungeon is fully cleared or some checkpoint has been passed inside, then there should be no option to leave and come back. I like this idea but I'm not sure if that could be implemented easily. I would rather prefer always respawning enemies with less strength or number, e.g. if you have cleared a map or dungeon and you would come back after some time there would be new enemies but not that much and not that strong as before because they have to gather strength first (over time). And of course important bosses would be gone forever.- 81 replies

Death
LordCrash replied to Monte Carlo's topic in Pillars of Eternity: General Discussion (NO SPOILERS)
I also like the BG 2 system because companions could die perminently (when turned to stone and the stoned get smashed or when imprisoned in the ground) and you need high level spells or items for resurrecting fallen companions. It's much too casual if companions only get knocked down until the fight is over, that's not how a "classic" CRPG should be. For sure, you can avoid permanent death in BG 2 by reloading the level but that is part of the gaming experience: reloading and changing tactics, attacks, spells, formations, timing etc. until the whole team survives a fight. That was quite a satisfying experience in BG 2 if you managend to smash Kangaxx or Firkraag without loosing companions.- 81 replies
