Nice post. I feel somewhat similarly, in many ways agree with Junta for different reasons. I don't care about spoilers per se despite never looking them up, if I somehow end up getting one I will sort of shrug and play anyway. What does get me is time. I am not some kid in highschool anymore who goes to school 35 hours or so a week, lives 2 minutes from school, and can play his gameboy in class. I have a job that runs 40 or sometimes more a week (god do I hate it when it does), and a daily commute of around an hour. When I do have time to sit down and play a game I don't have the desire to be spending an hour on figuring out one puzzle or one or two really complex fights anymore. I play games for fun and as a hobby, when they stop being fun I don't just "power through" out of some whacked out gamer pride like I used to when I was a kid. I either look up a solution, or decide it isn't fun for me and I quit. I have over 100 games in steam. I always have something else to play.

So in actuality after thinking about it you could do this pretty easily. 1: Every game is based on the player who is hosting. 2: Decisions. When a "sidebar" or non critical decision is made/talking point comes up the game simply does a random "check" the dialog then falls to the randomly selected player. Meaning players other than the main one sometimes get to pipe in with their own dialog etc. When a "critical" decision is made the decision always goes to the host player. 3: Game world. Everyone has their own world. If you are playing with someone else and they are the host you are in their game and the game is based on their choices. When you go back to your game you are back where you were last time you played. Progress from the other persons world where they were hosting has no effect on yours. 4: Loot. "Unique" loot goes to the host. The tag along players get rewarded via random similar loot generated for them. So if you find the equivalent of a +5 holy avenger of ass handing that goes to the host but the tag along's all get a weaker but legit piece of loot that is random. Such as a +4 suit of chainmail or something and someone else gets a +3 long sword that does +1d6 fire damage or something. Money is simple. Host gets 100% of whatever is found multiplayer people get 50% of the hosts found loot plus 100% of whatever they personally sell. 5: Exp. Who cares if you get lots of levels. Sure your game world becomes slightly easier because you are stronger but your party isn't leveling with you and you are still level capped. That said other players earn exp at the same rate as host. 6: Pausing.... obviously wouldn't be an option anymore and as such you "might" have to tweak combat a little. 7: Death. KO'd players simply go unconscious until the end of the fight per the games current rules. If the party wipes the game just sets you back to the last save. 8: Saving. As a result of "7" saving now only happens on rest. This sort of sucks but it is a caveat you have to eat to make the MP work much like the pausing. And.... that is basically it. This is how I would do it if it were going to be done anyway. All of this is semantics regardless but who knows what will happen with PoE2.

I was making a joke Lephys . The fact that I "liked" your initial post should make it pretty clear where I stand. I am not even a big multiplayer fan personally, but if you implement it well and design it with the concept that more than one person will be in game from the beginning it can work extremely effectively for a story based RPG. A combination of Borderlands 2 quest progress where you can jump in game with another person who is ahead of you in story progress, do some stuff with them, then drop back to your game and when you get to the point where their content would have started you get a "skip ahead" option. If you say yes the game just assumes you make all the same choices the other dude did. If no you get to replay it your way. The only real issues would be how to handle loot, and the fact that you probably would lose the ability to pause.
-
Stop trying to be logical and make sense Lephys you know it doesn't work. This game clearly is not being designed for multiplayer at this point. That said a RPG game designed for multiplayer from the ground up with this type of gameplay and story COULD work. I found the story the best part of the Star Wars Old Republic MMO and there were plenty of other players involved there. Sometimes one of them got their way and something I didn't want to happen did, and you know what.... tough. That's part of what makes multiplayer fun, other people being able to influence your game. So Lephys you are basically correct. There is nothing wrong with multiplayer, at all. I will say they do need to build for it from the start though, so maybe with the sequel?

Actually I found the skull to be fairly annoying. That said a few companions that are outside of the "norms" would be nice but try not to be different for the sake of being different which is really just another form of cliche. -

I would have voted for it Osvir but the poll was hell bent on putting Metal Gear Solid V against all of the games I like a lot. My final top 5 from that poll doesn't resemble my real answer because Metal Gear Solid V is my most anticipated game of his year (I love metal gear sue me). I would certainly rather play Deep Down, Witcher 3, or Project Eternity than Final Fantasy 15.... but 15 kept getting softball opposition until like the last two picks so made it in my top 5. Those three games though had the misfortune of being paired against MGSV.- 45 replies

..... Did you people even play Mass Effect 3. You would need to be a world class idiot to think that single player was not the focus of that game. Yes it had a multiplayer option. But that multiplayer was completely separate from the single player game, used the same mechanics of single player, and had absolutely no effect on the actual single player game. What's that you had to do multiplayer to get the best resources or whatever?..... Maybe, (and I say maybe with massive emphasis) but you didn't need the best you only needed "enough" to get the "good" endings. Besides most of you whined like 5 year old's about the ending anyway.

New Kickstarter incoming
Karkarov replied to C2B's topic in Pillars of Eternity: General Discussion (NO SPOILERS)
I concur. This isn't Grand Theft Auto V, 2 years + a couple months should be more than enough time to learn unity, get what tools you need, and put the game together. So while I don't mind it being delayed past April I will be very... disappointed if it doesn't arrive sometime in December. That said it is sort of strange but most of the vocal backers think it would be okay if they took like 4-5 years and cite companies like Blizzard and such as good examples. No offense, but Blizzard takes 5 years to make a game that is nothing but a rehash of a game they already made with new graphics slapped on. I really wouldn't point to them as a good developers. For comparisons sake it took Blizzard somewhere around 5 years (probably longer, they just aren't honest about their dev cycle) to make Diablo 3. It took Grinding Gear Games 3 years to get Path of Exile into a public beta that has now seen real release. Bear in mind... many people will also tell you Path of Exile is the better game, and it was made with a dramatically smaller team to boot. So yeah back to point... please aim for 2014 devs at least get the year right. -
What does "mature" mean, anyway?
Karkarov replied to Endrosz's topic in Pillars of Eternity: General Discussion (NO SPOILERS)
The doody is piling up. Tolkein wasn't writing a book about racism or social issues, he was writing a fantasy epic. Will his personal feelings as a person color his writing somewhat? Of course. But was he thinking about politics when writing his books? Was he thinking about social issues? Was he trying to make some sort of statement about his views? No, no, and no. When people read that hard into his (or anyone's stories for that matter) when the writer did not intend these types of issues to be discussed or disseminated .... well, you are guilty of injecting your politics into their writing. Which means you are seeing what you want to see, not what the author wrote. That said these last few pages have been fairly crude, insulting, and flamey on all sides. Maybe we should all just agree to not agree and move on? Also please stop Junta, saying you don't find Ethnicity X attractive is not racist. It is just you stating you don't find them attractive for whatever reason. Racist is saying ethnicity X is too stupid to do basic algebra, or ethnicity Y lack morals and are just criminals and scum. -

Karkarov replied to Endrosz's topic in Pillars of Eternity: General Discussion (NO SPOILERS)
I gotta call bulldoody..... yes doody. Tolkein wasn't trying to make any political statement. You want to read a fantasy series trying to make a political statement read "The Sword of Truth" books. Even though I "mostly" agree with the politics behind them those books get so heavy handed at one point even I was like it is time to take a step back and tone down the grandstanding. -

No. They are right to not trust the elephant people, elephants are plotting to take over the world after all. That said, the "elephant people" get mentioned like what? Twice in the lord of the rings? They certainly are never actually seen or heard from in the books. People need to stop over analyzing Tolkien's books, they were written when they were written. They were not written last tuesday and they don't need the "modern" perspective being forced on them. -
What to have in this RPG game
Karkarov replied to vonbee5040's topic in Pillars of Eternity: General Discussion (NO SPOILERS)
Hmmm? I remember it being mentioned back in the kickstarter and basically the idea was "if BG had it this game would have it too". It isn't a big deal to me either way. That said the reason multiplayer sucked in BG is because 1: It was LAN only. 2: The implemented it like crap. MP could work, they just have to actually design it correctly. With BG they didn't take the effort. -
Fear: UIv2
Karkarov replied to Sensuki's topic in Pillars of Eternity: General Discussion (NO SPOILERS)
It sure would be nice to see a link to where you are getting your info about the "main menu" buttons not even being on the UI at all. If that is the case that actually points to a more minimalist design idea as that is taking functions that used to be on the UI off of it. Meanwhile, no, I would never design a UI that looks anything like what you just posted as the layout would be crap. What I posted is designed as a full bar, not a partial, not windows. I would do it much differently if it weren't going to be full bar. Additionally, my UI does every function you could want. I took too long getting to the FAQ for it explaining what everything is but I am posting that now. I appreciate the compliments but a few hypothesis you made (and others) are off. You are right though, the Adra Orb is the pause button. I made sure the design would include every function the BG UI had, and or more besides. To do less would have been to fail at the whole point of making the full bar UI design in the first place. That out of the way... Here is that FAQ I was talking about in image form that explains what every part of the UI would be and or do. I will add some additional detail and say the Portraits are 80 wide by 90 tall, the buttons are all 40x40 or larger save a few random ones like the selection buttons. It is funny how small they look at a non shrunk resolution. Again I advise people look full screen, not at the small version, it is a 1080 pic if you are looking at it at anything other than 100% zoom you are not seeing it as it is intended. Picture FAQ for UI Also here is a collection of pics with the UI on different backgrounds. I am doing this just to show that... actually it does look pretty good despite seeming to be a weird color choice. I also always thought of it as odd brown stone not necessarily wood. Maybe I am weird. UI set against possible Animus Laboratory Battle scene at the docks (note this BG had to be upscaled a little so it suffers some quality loss) Foggy night in what is possibly Defiance Bay Monsters planning ambush in cave Entrance to a cave Everyone's favorite classic Eternity background- 184 replies

What to have in this RPG game
Karkarov replied to vonbee5040's topic in Pillars of Eternity: General Discussion (NO SPOILERS)
Actually we already have 5 confirmed (you get to own a keep, join factions, etc etc.), 7 is more than likely going to be in, and 9 is probably going to happen to. After all it is unity, they have said there will be multiplayer (yes guys, they said it would be there, it is in BG after all), and it is a pc game again with unity engine so it is definitely moddable no matter what. I also can't see it not having lan support, again purists.... BG had lan support funny you dudes forgot all that.... Monthly DLC, would rather not unless they can keep the price low (a couple bucks) and the content legitimate. Like a new dungeon of 3-5 floors or something. I don't see that happening though and think it is too much to ask for. Massive maps they would do, except they cant. It just isn't that "style" of game and the file sizes would need to be too huge for too little payoff. Having one massive map is not as optimal for this style of RPG as just having multiple small maps with focus on each area. -
Wow, that's a pretty clever idea. I doubt they will do it, but clever nonetheless. Not sure I am down with that. 1: Really really complex. 2: Why are all these different sleeping beasts, displaced whacko's, and ancient animancy labs all linked to the same place/have no where else to go or be? 3: This idea means it wouldn't be a mega dungeon, it would be like 5 floors where depending on story progress different stuff may or may not be there. I would rather have a straight forward dungeon and if you want to do these sort of one off things let it happen based on the event and let those events trigger things that make the most logical sense. Don't shoe horn it all into Od Nua just to give it some weird spin. I also find it weird why people are so upset about a story mission leading you there. Who cares? So you have to do the first floor early in the game for a story mission? It is just a way to introduce the player to the area so they don't somehow miss it.

Karkarov replied to Sensuki's topic in Pillars of Eternity: General Discussion (NO SPOILERS)
Thanks for the compliment. Uh there are two places you could see ability buttons in the UI. 1: the center bar which can be changed between 3 different "sets" using the center buttons (you see the small yellow and two gray ones, it's those). 2: You can click on the letters on the far right side where the combat log is. This swaps it to either being a dialogue log, a combat log, or just shows the two bars you currently aren't using in the center. Only thing is the center bar would obviously be quick keys the right side bars... not so much. It looks okay against most things, like I said can post more images later. Pop out UI elements would be nice but remember! That would require using some UI design ideas not available in 1994 . I can understand the desire for wanting a "solid" UI but still feel pop out elements would be better than most of the stuff likely to be seen. Such as little + or - buttons that let you add or remove action bars etc etc. I did still refuse to include the useless static formation buttons since just having your quick bar turn into formation buttons when more than one person is selected seems like a no brainer. I will post more stuff about this just been too busy to sit down and do it for right now.- 184 replies

Yeap, I already said way back when they officially confirmed the previously known but not confirmed fact tha..... .... yeah.... that the name was Pillars of Eternity I would just say "Eternity" instead. The Pillars make me think of that romance/drama series called Pillars of Earth about building churches in Medieval England and Pillars of Creation that god awful book of pure crap.

Uh.... Gamespots game of the year 2013 was Legend of Zelda: A Link Between Worlds. I don't know how you can abbreviate that into PoE. http://www.gamespot.com/videos/game-of-the-year-2013-video/2300-6416619/ If you mean Path of Exile I wouldn't really be concerned. That is hardly a high profile game and no one is going to get Eternity and Exile confused. This is coming from someone who actually plays Path of Exile too....

Fear: UIv2
Karkarov replied to Sensuki's topic in Pillars of Eternity: General Discussion (NO SPOILERS)
Hey I bet you guys totally forgot I said I was doing one last concept just to satisfy Sensuki's desire for a decent full bottom bar ui design? Well I didn't, and here it is. I would like to remind anyone who might feel the need to immediately go in looking for things not to like of two things before they look at the image. 1: It literally has everything you could possibly want ever on the ui, no really. There is no function you could want that is not included in some way, that said I am short on time when I am doing this original post and it would literally take me an hour to explain it all so I am not going to do that at time of initial post. I will post some stupidly obscene and detailed FAQ about it all later. 2: This ui is not what I would use if I were going to be the "man" on UI. There is no need for a full bottom bar in my opinion you can get all these functions and use much less space than I did easily. It won't be as "artisitic" and may not look as cool, but it would still be able to look good and would work. This is just how I would do it if it did have to be the full bottom bar. I did that to satisfy people who wanted such a concept (like Sensuki) and to also show just how much space would ideally be taken + lost to oversized buttons and art features to make it take up that full bottom bar. So last thing before pic... I decided to take inspiration from the backer portal for my design. You will notice many elements lifted from there (though no where near all of them) and it informed a lot of my color choice. Bear in mind I will post multiple versions of this in links later so you can see it will different released screenshots as a BG. It might "look" really dark in some places but I have tested it against tons of images it looks good with all of them in my opinion. Also for those who want specifics. This is a 1080 image (1920x1080), and was designed at that resolution. This is not something I made at some huge res then scaled down to make it look better. Why 1080, because it is the most common modern resolution that's about it. The UI is also exactly 160 pixels tall (not counting the slight drop shadow) which is 2 pixels short of exactly 15% of the vertical space at 1080.- 184 replies
