My only concern is that bit about "critical path". I won't mind if the game requires me to go a couple levels in I guess but I shouldn't have to clear half the thing, much less the whole thing, for the main story. I always felt it was some sort of Durlag Tower like area that was there if you wanted to test yourself, something you didn't "have" to do.

New Kickstarter incoming
Karkarov replied to C2B's topic in Pillars of Eternity: General Discussion (NO SPOILERS)
I dun know but I love the avatar, that game just doesn't get enough credit. That said I would like them to wait on any other kickstarter projects until at least march or so. Give me some time to recover from the holidays will you? It would also be nice to see Eternity BEFORE the new project but I know that isn't happening... -

Kickstart Backer Badge
Karkarov replied to Gfted1's topic in Pillars of Eternity: General Discussion (NO SPOILERS)
So I have the badges on my profile but I don't have them when I post. Ok so manage your pledge.... problem... When I manage my pledge I always get a time out error on the final step where I "place your order" and it never seems to confirm. Any suggestions mod team? -
No Sleep for the Watcher .com?
Karkarov replied to Pipyui's topic in Pillars of Eternity: General Discussion (NO SPOILERS)
Nice a little teaser page too, glad to see we got such a meaty update at long last. Now if only I could see my own forum badges and get my pledge update to take ;p. -
Update 68 Camp-out thread
Karkarov replied to Sensuki's topic in Pillars of Eternity: General Discussion (NO SPOILERS)
Yeah the issue is there is only this week (normal scheduled update week) and next week. After next week they will be in holiday mode and likely won't have any updates before the second week of January at best. There will also certainly be no bugs getting ironed out while they are on Christmas/New Years holiday so if they aren't ironed out basically now... then we probably won't see the site before third week of January if not early February, which would really suck. -
Update 68 Camp-out thread
Karkarov replied to Sensuki's topic in Pillars of Eternity: General Discussion (NO SPOILERS)
If we are going to get the big update before January it will be most likely this week so here's to hoping. I like every update Obsidian gives us, but at this point it has been too long since a "significant" update was done. -
Backer site
Karkarov replied to argan's topic in Pillars of Eternity: General Discussion (NO SPOILERS)
The amount of hate the people who have basically been funding video games for years get is sort of funny. I like Obsidian games I really do, I gladly funded PE. But to insinuate EA or anyone else for that matter is some scum company and little guys are not guilty sometimes of the same things is just wrong. Hell I couldn't even play the opening cinematic of New Vegas it was so buggy, not only did it look like crap due to some form of glitch but if I didn't skip it my game would crash. That's the tip of the iceberg on that game too. Meanwhile EA also has in house developers that they own and or manage themselves. You guys may have no respect for the people who make Madden or Fifa games but I am pretty those are video games too and EA doesn't just "distribute" them. Hell as average a product as Amalaur was it never would have even made it to market without EA. -
Just as a fair warning Seiki tv's and monitors are not something you should look at for a bench mark. They are fairly low quality tv's that regardless of "features" look worse than any top brand when put side by side. Also please just trust me when I say this as I am not saying it as an opinion but as a person whose job involves knowing these kinds of things.

Boxed Version DRM
Karkarov replied to Skie Nightfall's topic in Pillars of Eternity: General Discussion (NO SPOILERS)
The box copy has the same DRM all boxed games do.... you need a disc to install it. -
Backer site
Karkarov replied to argan's topic in Pillars of Eternity: General Discussion (NO SPOILERS)
Backer site is just one part of the big update but a backer site is also key to getting additional funding, letting people alter their already existing pledges, and communicate with the fans. A well made backer portal gives the people who care about the project the chance to support it more and gives the devs a direct pipeline to the users who put their money where their mouth is. Not to mention that but "theoretically" it also means official forums instead of just piggy backing on the obsidian in general forums, the forum badges and such, additional info on the game via lore/more pictures/new videos (gameplay or otherwise) etc etc. One look at the star citizen backer portal tells you everything you need to know about why getting it done is important. No this game isn't going to make that type of money, but it could be getting more funding than it is. -
You can do that in skyrim through modding, at least on the pc version. You are still a "blank slate" though. Like I said you can make up any sort of in game backstory you want but when the game only sees "redguard, high skill with bows" it doesn't really matter.

Update 68 Camp-out thread
Karkarov replied to Sensuki's topic in Pillars of Eternity: General Discussion (NO SPOILERS)
Like I said, no way we are getting an update this week. They had to scratch together last week, and half of this week they spent with their family. They have two weeks to get the big update out, if it isn't out in two weeks it is going to be second to third week of January at best. Everyone needs perspective. The devs have family, holiday shopping, and personal lives/plans too. Things like this is why most games don't get publicized until they are within a year of launching. -
Update 68 Camp-out thread
Karkarov replied to Sensuki's topic in Pillars of Eternity: General Discussion (NO SPOILERS)
Yeah lets be real, odds of an update today are minimal. Next week is our best chance if we want to see the major update before 2014. -
Yes, obviously the "reactivity" I am looking for is getting dialog option 3 to change to "Eat Cold Steel", "Eat Fiery Death", or "Eat Mother Natures Fury" based on my class. The only real class reactivity in an Obsidian game worth mentioning is in BG2 when you get a different "stronghold" based on class. And there were still only what 3 of them? No, I am looking for REAL response to character creation that takes a character background into account. Not race/class and nothing else. I am talking quests specific to certain background choices, possible endings locked behind certain background options, potential faction relationships being different at game start, etc etc. I am not talking about the game flagging me as needing to be hailed as a "Warrior" instead of a "Wizard" because I choose fighter.
-
You guys know "blank slate" is a non character. You can invent whatever backstory you want, but if you have a "blank slate" character the game will never act on it or acknowledge it exists because in game mechanics terms... it doesn't. So sure you cause use your invented backstory to inform your choices... but that conversation you just had with it's three dialog options will always be the same choice with the same dialog no matter what character you play. Be it a female human mage, a make elven bard, a female dwarven priest, or a male godlike cipher with hair made of fire. I would much rather have the option to pick some kind of background that would have some kind of effect on the game itself no matter how small that effect was. Even one conversation being different due to my choices is better than zero conversations being different because I am a "blank slate".
-
I still wonder how many of you actually played Dragon Age Origins. The origins could have a major impact on the story and depending on your origin some of them actually had endings that could not be achieved if you did not have that specific origin. Were some of them better implemented than others? Yes. But that doesn't mean they sucked or they didn't tie into the game at any point after. That is just patented BS.
-
Don't know why you guys like playing characters with no personality or history so much. It isn't like you can really control your character personality anyway when all your dialog choices are always limited by what the devs give you. Personally I voted DA:O's like game start with medium game influence.

As a Witcher fan yourself, you know about the Witcher 3 coming along, right? It promises exactly what you're talking about, plus the pointless sex. You mean in Witcher 3 I don't play as Geralt of Rivia and I actually get to create my own character with my own backstory and personality? Wait that's not how it is? Didn't think so. I want the whole enchilada. Skyrim open world/freedom, deep/engaging plot like Witcher, but ability to create my own character with their own backstory to some extent like in Dragon Age Origins.

Since you don't actually read my posts I am going to quote the important bit again. "None of that changes the fact that making a ui "user definable" is a waste of dev time, resources, and still considerably harder than any of you are giving it credit for." I have been against the whole idea of this thread from the day it was posted. So again, no, I don't need any "special support" and I think anyone who is asking for it needs to get over it because there are better things to spend time on. I don't care what you are playing the game on, they don't need to bother making a user definable ui.
-
Sensuki that just isn't right. Most of the big "RPG's" from the last few years were not ported from console.... they were ported from PC. The Witcher 2, Skyrim, Fallout New Vegas, Dragon Age: Origins, just for example were all designed for PC first or PC and console at the same time. Just because it is designed to play well on a console too doesn't mean it was designed for console primarily.... nor does being a console RPG mean it sucks by default. That said what would I like? I would like to see the narrative depth of say... the Witcher (minus all the pointless sex) but in an open world like Skyrim and with a character I get to create who is not a blank slate but has a in depth in game method of generating a personality and backstory. Not asking for much I know.

You are just using a "TV" as a monitor if you're sitting 3 feet away, and the differences between budget monitors and TVs is a built in tuner most of the time. There's no reason for extra support for you at all. You guys are sort of ..... eh.... My point is this. A TV and a Monitor are the same thing. Any modern tv when connected to a PC will react the same way a "monitor" would. You don't NEED to do some special support for TV's and people suggesting you do have no clue what you are talking about. The game is being designed around 1080p, that's all the "support" TV's need. None of that changes the fact that making a ui "user definable" is a waste of dev time, resources, and still considerably harder than any of you are giving it credit for.

Yeah I didn't really think this was a big deal until I started playing BG2 again. Holy crap that system they use in BG is total garbage! I have had moments where I remember from when I played it before "yeah that was trapped" so I send my thief with 95% chance to find traps.... 95%!!!!! Not only does it take like 10-15 seconds, assuming they even find it, but I have had multiple times where they found nothing and I was forced to reload due to a character death/lost exp due to no disarm. It isn't like 1 out of 10 traps either... I had one room yesterday with three traps in it that after 5 minutes of trying to get her to detect traps I KNEW was there at 95% I finally had to have someone slot of the find traps spell. It is just idiotic and a waste of time.
