Kotaku Obsidian Article
GhoulishVisage replied to C2B's topic in Pillars of Eternity: General Discussion (NO SPOILERS)
That's why my hope is that if Obsidian manages to do another Star Wars game it won't be in The Old Republic timeline. The Old Republic Timeline has become far too full and busy. A new Star Wars RPG should start on a fresh page, so to speak. -

I can get thoroughly behind the idea of a KOTOR 3 by Obsidian. Who knows, maybe they'll let them finish and re-release a remastered KOTOR 2 as well. Yeah, I know that's not likely to happen, but a man can dream. I know a lot of people will disagree with me, but I'd personally like them to move away from the Old Republic setting (and subsequently TOR) if they do end up doing another Star Wars RPG. -

Personally I think that Avellone should throw another one of Ravel's facets into this game. Build up a sort of meta-plot, sort of like Morrison does in comics and Steven King likes to do in his books.- 24 replies

Not at all. I misunderstood your comment as "if you want magical-school music go and play a magical-school game". Sorry about that. Need to brush up on my reading comprehension. That's rather vague if you ask me. Seems rather more like a tidbit of information about the world than confirmation of nautical adventuring.

I wasn't saying that PE's theme should be exactly like that, I was just using it as an example of how theme music doesn't have to be a sweeping orchestra to be memorable and effective. I quite liked the one-two-three strum in the Dirge of Eir Glanfath and the strong part that followed with the violins (?), but Road to Eternity has the most memorable feeling (in my opinion) of the music so far with its distinctive intro. Really? I thought that was just Zeits mulling over ideas for the expansion on his formspring. Or is there some info I'm missing?
-
A theme doesn't necessarily have to be some epic sounding orchestra to be memorable. Just look at the faintly creepy Harry Potter tune that utilities it's plinkyplonk sound to great effect. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zCNHVMIYqiA I personally wouldn't mind a subdued and creepy theme. But what makes an enduring theme, I'm wondering? Is it the media it's attached to that makes the song so memorable, or does the song itself go a long way to making itself seem defined?
-
With Project Eternity hopefully becoming Obsidian's very own franchise I have been pondering about theme music. Should PE have it's own distinctive theme music that is used throughout the franchise? Memorable theme tunes can embed themselves into the psyches of fans and can become just as recognizable as any visual icons. The Elder Scrolls has a consistent theme throughout all of it's games, but with each release it is altered to fit with the area that the game takes place in whilst still retaining it's base structure. Some recognizable themes that are probably just as famous as the movies they appear in include the theme to Star Wars, Lord of the Rings, Indianna Jones and Harry Potter. Those are pretty extreme examples, but it shows how theme music can become iconic. Should Project Eternity have one main theme, or should it change from game to game depending on the mood and themes therein? What makes a memorable theme tune for you?

It's possibly just a physical representation of his power. It might be what appears as he's summoning up a poisonous miasma, or when he's casting a spell that makes the parties' weapons poisonous. Alternatively, it could just appear when he's making a summon or some other spell that doesn't involve some sort of ballistic. The snakes having a direct impact on what the spell does seem a bit literal. Although that said I'm definitely open to some cool eldritch snake-based spells.

So because I find the designs in the recent art bland means I must just adore the cartoonish exaggerations of World of Warcraft, right? You're attacking a straw man here. Of all of the concepts so far I've really liked Sagani's design. It differentiates itself from the norm whilst still looking damned good (I do prefer her with the facepaint from the colour pic) and achieving the "grounded" feeling that I think Obsidian is going for. Another thing I like the visual look of is the appearance of Aloth's magic, It's visually unique and looks good. It looks like something that belongs to Project Eternity.

I'm a bit iffy about the armor and clothing designs I've seen so far. It looks so... regular. I feel like I could flip open my DnD 3.5 and find a picture that looks almost exactly like the Aumaua shown there. What they've shown so far looks like any standard fantasy game. Nothing there to differentiate, stand out or make an impression. There's nothing there that says "Project Eternity by Obsidian Entertainment" to me. It just seems bland. But then again, it's super early in the development, they've shown only a few uncoloured pictures and they probably haven't nailed down exactly what aesthetic they want to go for yet, so my judgement may be a bit harsh and unwarranted.

I don't have a problem with his view on morality, I like a good heroic book once in a while, but I really dislike his writing style. His plots seem to be structured as "things happen and then things happen" if that makes sense. Also his characters are completely flat. That said, there is something strangely compelling about his books, they're all basically the same and you know exactly what you're going to get but you can't stop reading them. It's like David Eddings in that sense. It's a sort of literary crack-cocaine.

WAIT. WAIT. AT 05:00 IN THE VIDEO. WHY HAVE ALOTH'S SNAKES BEEN TAKEN AWAY. WHY. I LIKED HIS MAGIC SNAKES.

Piracy and DRM
GhoulishVisage replied to Hormalakh's topic in Pillars of Eternity: General Discussion (NO SPOILERS)
Hm, could have worded that better, I wasn't referring to you I was referring to talking to people who wanted to/already had pirated Project Eternity. Verbally assaulting them would just make them immediately go into the defensive and give the Obsidian community a reputation for being combative fanboys. Sorry about that. -
Piracy and DRM
GhoulishVisage replied to Hormalakh's topic in Pillars of Eternity: General Discussion (NO SPOILERS)
The only thing that thing that we can do is be as awesome of a community as possible. I was swayed into trying and buying STALKER simply because of how cool the community was and how riveting their stories of The Zone were. Also, if we see someone mentioning that they're going to/have pirated PE we can just say "Hey, Obsidian are really cool and it'd be great if you supported them." Attacking a person rarely works to change their mind, and may only further validate their own opinions about pirating the game. Other than that PR is entirely in Obsidian's court. If they conduct themselves in a manner similar to CDPR (minus that legal rumpus) and their game is good they'll build a fantastically devoted following for Project Eternity in no time. As for the CD-key thing, as far as I'm aware isn't PE digital distribution only? The only physical copies going out (as far as I'm aware) will be for the backers who pledged extra for them, and that might be a bit unfair to those people. -
Piracy and DRM
GhoulishVisage replied to Hormalakh's topic in Pillars of Eternity: General Discussion (NO SPOILERS)
Not wanting DRM doesn't equate to piracy, and the way Obsidian will get the fans of their games to tell pirates "hey, that isn't cool" is by building goodwill, the first step of which is getting rid of DRM. CDPR have realized this, and as a result the pc community have rallied behind them. Their game still gets pirated, but despite that it's hugely successful and has a devoted following who do tell pirates to piss off. Nothing can be done to stop a game from getting pirated, but they can change how they react to this, and thus how the community will react to them. -
Piracy and DRM
GhoulishVisage replied to Hormalakh's topic in Pillars of Eternity: General Discussion (NO SPOILERS)
You're kidding, right? You do know why CDPR is so beloved by the pc community, right? I just... goddamn. You ACTUALLY want DRM as though it's in any way effective and not irritating? The best DRM is goodwill, everything else gets cracked. http://www.pcgamer.com/2012/10/24/cd-projekt-red-interview-cyberpunk-2077-witcher-2-piracy-windows-8-and-more/ -
That cape with the pauldrons over it looks pretty damned cool. Aristocratic. But how do those pauldrons move without digging uncomfortably into one's back? They make it look hard to take an overhead swing. Does anyone have any informational links about armor? I found these two vaguely interesting ones. The Function of Armor in Medieval and Renaissance Europe How a Man shall be Armed Quilted armor in use. Variety is fun. A German Knight with an itchy nose.

Now that I think about it, padded armor actually has far more aesthetic potential than leather armor. Why is it that padded armor like gambeson is so often omitted completely in fantasy? Is it just because leather is a more "believable" material to use in armor than plain old cloth? (Although many padded armors actually had plates sewn into them)
-
Perhaps padded armor should replace the default leather armor as a light armor? From the pictures I've seen it doesn't look half-bad either.

I think it'd be better if the races were genetically incompatible. Might make for even more racial tension, as well as it being more plausible. Or it could be an interesting situation if half-whatevers were sterile, like mules and other instances where two species mix. Although I don't think that ALL of the races should be genetically compatible, just humans and one of the other races.
