Update #64: Developer Q&A with Kaz
Nonek replied to BAdler's topic in Pillars of Eternity: Announcements & News
I agree, this was totally the wrong tone for an anniversary celebration, from my own experience it should be far more silent, uncomfortable and awkward.- 151 replies

I think to be honest that Firefly as a product is quite a hard sell, many of its themes are existential and ocassionally nihilistic, it's an ensemble piece with some rather traditionally unlikable characters (though I find Jayne to be a refreshing change of personality,) and there is no clear moral message being promoted like in most popular sci-fi, such as Star Wars or Trek. That said I find it far more to my taste for these elements being included, but one can see the general public finding it a touch off putting.

Yes indeed, along with a little Ghosts and Goblins, in the form of armour equalling health. One warning there are no save points on levels, so death means try again from the beginning.

Ah thank you, only just whetted my appetite on the television series and film, but Book's background certainly explains the references in "War Stories." The medicines miss Sara was carrying and her routine medical check up on Arial seemed too much of a Chekhov's gun to not be indicative of something, along with her obvious attraction to Mr Reynold's not being acted upon as is shown in "Heart of Gold," and her decision thereafter to leave the ship.

Volgarr the Viking. Purchased for $9 off of GOG, so around £6.25, extremely unforgiving game but very enjoyable and well worth the money.

Always pondered whether Book was an overseer, sent by the government faction who helped Simon free his sister, to chart their progress and make reports on how she performed in the field. Anybody else think Ms Sara was dying?

I simply felt no need to re-iterate my various complaints about DA2 Decado, which were spelled out in the first of these threads, link ahoy: http://forums.obsidian.net/topic/64006-dragon-age-inquisition/page-6?do=findComment&comment=1344974 As you can see, they're rather scathing, but even so I must admit that I did get my moneys worth from the product. I will freely admit that I can be overly analytical at times however, a failing I am somewhat proud of for my sins.

The sequel "To Play the King" is also of the highest quality, and features an interesting power dynamic. The concluding part of the trilogy "The Final Cut" was I thought a little too blatant and obvious, but still worth watching for the sake of rounding out Francis Urquharts saga. -
Personally I care not a whit for either EA or Bioware's business practises, all I care for is the games they are asking me to pay for. If they meet my expectations then the company has performed its purpose, if not then I will be somewhat critical, though I certainly don't expect my criticism to be heeded as i'm somewhat in a minority in terms of taste. I've made my thoughts known on DA2, but I played the game for sixty hours and so more than recouped my expenses, thus it fulfilled its main purpose.

Many years ago I undertook surgery to have a small evergreen removed from my rectum, it worked and I now remain as ever the zany life and soul of the party. -

I disassociated myself from my mothers embraces for this very reason, that and the tendency to drop her haitches. My father fully supported me in this choice, as she had on ocassion buttered his crumpets with flagrant abandon, and helped me compose the legal paperwork and hire a respected solicitor. I recommend this action to any six year old. -
My thoughts at that point: I've just earned fifty sovereigns in a few days, why exactly do I need to go into the Deep Roads, risk blight and death when i'm rapidly becoming a Croesus in Kirkwall.

Dear Mother. Brevity is not your enemy, your points backed up by linked facts presented in a sharp and concise fashion would be far more effective than this rambling diatribe. English is a vast and fluid language, and surely the words could be found to sum up your feelings in far fewer sentences and paragraphs. All that your letter made me think of is how little respect you are paying to a cherished method of communication. Murdering the English language is not a crime I wish to indulge in, and so I have decided to divorce you as a parent. I do not wish to be infected by the uncaring and brutal attitude with which you treat the language of the Venerable Bede, Chaucer, Shakespeare, Milton and Dickens, or the casual disdain you find for economy of prose, concise terminology or interesting and gripping use of phrases and terms. Shame on you Madam, and shame on the example you set the entire world when immortalising your thoughts in prose. With openly displayed scorn and disdain. D. -

So if me and Mrs Nonek are both squiffy, and indulge in a bit of hows your father, then whom has raped whom? -
Well i've said it before and i'll say it again, Ultima 7 made the most believable of npc's, who worked, went to the pub or church, went home to sleep or conducted secret dalliances etcetera. This was twenty years ago with a few megabytes (if that) of information, surely we can't have regressed so far that this is beyond the scope of modern games? One would think it would be par for the course two decades later.

Commiserations Mr Schu. I'm surprised that everybody's so emotionally mature, what's wrong with repressing everything, becoming monosyllabic and drinking heavily. Alternated with a spirited bit of violence on the rugger pitch and the comfort of good escapist passtimes, I find this is more than enough to get me through lifes interesting times. Got to admit that I find Facebook and Twitter a touch distasteful, they seem a little vain and attention seeking, though that may be my generational bias talking. That and i'm too much of a boring old fart to contribute anything attention worthy.

One usually prefers a more organic form of storytelling, sat on the porch of the rangers mansion listening to Chief Hanlon spin his tales, discovering the convoluted history of the weapons I weild, deciphering histories scrawled on the walls of tombs, summoning long dead spirits so that we might converse on their life and times, ripping secrets from the minds of those who dare to oppose me, fitting cylinders into an ancient machine that spins to life and delivers a message recorded in atiquity, etcetera, etcetera. That said I usually devour the written word with the appetite of a gourmand when interested in that particular subject. Edit: The books in Arcanum certainly stand out as, as well as Torian Kel's monologue on the war between the Molochean Hand and Grey Legion of the Derian Ka. Thoroughly enchanting. Edit 2: The account of Balin's colony in Moria was I think a fine method of making a book and its contents fairly interesting and well integrated. The worst instance of the written word in an rpg I ever encountered was when myself and company stopped to decipher a message in Futhark, and revealed the phrase *Do not read this* as a spelltrap activated, rather irritating though somewhat comical.

Decided I fancied a runthrough of Alpha Protocol, booted up just after watching an Interview with Mr Avellone, now is it just me or is Mr Thornton's body shape modelled after the aforementioned gentleman?

Based on your review and the fact i've not really liked a Total War since Viking Invasion, I think i'll pass, much appreciated JFSOCC.

Finished off the Myth series, the third game is definitely a different creature and to my mind destroys a lot of the great ambiguity that the first two games thrived on. That said I thought the plotting was brilliant in many respects, and it was extremely satisfying to finally have an identity for the head. This gameplay is really what I was expecting when I first heard that Dawn of War 2 was going down a similar path, with a small squad rather than the large scale skirmishes of the first game, pity it didn't really. Must say I thought the Black Company comparisons were not particularly striking, they were rather different in many respects.

Update #63: Stronghold!
Nonek replied to BAdler's topic in Pillars of Eternity: Announcements & News
Do we really want every consequence and option to be equal, doesn't that kind of invalidate the point of them? For instance I wouldn't want Ceasar's Legion to be liked and well thought of in a disputed borderland like the Mojave of New Vegas, it just wouldn't make sense for people living with the threat of torture, murder and enslavement to think well of the agents of such. Furthermore I assume we'll have various bonuses from maintaining and investing in a stronghold, however from what the update says we'll also have penalties such as being an obvious target, having to invest time, money and effort into upkeep and withstanding assaults. Making this all optional is to me a capital idea, for those playthroughs where I wish to maintain a low profile, not bother with so many systems and micromanagement and my character has no desire to rule. In these cases the player house seems like a viable alternative that will likely go unnoticed by my enemies, when hidden among the hustle and bustle of Defiance Bay.- 455 replies

Update #63: Stronghold!
Nonek replied to BAdler's topic in Pillars of Eternity: Announcements & News
Well two ways of dealing with that come to mind: 1. This is unique to the stronghold, old soul manipulation of Aer Glanfath that we cannot fathom, and kind of morally objectionable to deny a soul its rightful place in the wheel of birth, death and rebirth. 2. Spirits are common and integral to the setting, like in King of Dragon Pass. But as I say it's merely a suggestion, mainly to avoid instances of being weeks from home and yet still just in time to rush to the rescue. I'm fairly sure Mr Cain and company have allready formulated some viable method of communication.- 455 replies

Update #63: Stronghold!
Nonek replied to BAdler's topic in Pillars of Eternity: Announcements & News
I'm all for there being legions of consequences, penalties and bonuses, for those paths you choose to pursue or not so i'm happy that the Stronghold is optional and you will lose out on content if it's not taken advantage of. Too many games i'v eplayed lately have no real consequences because they're afraid of denying players content, or making choices count, i'm glad Eternity is moving away from this. Also makes a replay with a different character and choices all the more desirable. Wonder if the messenger for the Stronghold could be some kind of soul bound to the place, to further re-inforce one of the gameworlds themes, a guardian spirit or something. One would think that would have no problem alerting the citadels master through some otherworldly means.- 455 replies

Update #63: Stronghold!
Nonek replied to BAdler's topic in Pillars of Eternity: Announcements & News
Got to ask, will there be an escape tunnel in the Stronghold? Just in case it falls and needs liberating, or we need to get back in without alerting the besiegers. I assume the messages to the protagonist could be sent instantaneously by a Cipher, carried on the arcane currents by a Wizard, whispered on the wind by a Druid etcetera.- 455 replies
