Read the whole Hyperion Cantos. Simmons's writing and characters are great, but the story is horribly convoluted while having a very simplistic point, the sci-fi goes well into metaphysics and I wasn't the biggest fan of the ending either. Oh and Wise Man's Fear came out and is somewhat disappointing.

EVE seems really good for economy and sociology research, I sincerely hope that people are actually making use of it.

I-War 2 is the newest playable one I know. EVE is nothing like Elite, it's more of a space-adapted RPG with an emergent world and a focus on management. I-War 1/2 are up on GOG, by the way.

Saw Source Code, from the Moon guy. Good stuff, quite sci-fi-y with some other interesting elements thrown in. Recommended.

That would depend on the optimization on the PC version. There are quite a few games that run decently on PS3/360 and barely work on the highest end PCs of the time.
