Luckmann replied to Wespenfresser's topic in Pillars of Eternity: General Discussion (NO SPOILERS)
Bester is. That is exactly what Bester is saying. "I see a guy selling postcards with giant watermarks on them and I tell the guy to maybe not use watermarks." He also edited his long post about how you need to give up on your artwork and let it be free. It's bull****, and yeah--I'm angry. This makes me really angry. I hate watching people get attacked, when they are doing nothing wrong and in fact attempting to be nice, because of one guys self-entitled bull**** ideology. Let's take a look at exactly what Bester said. You even quote it yourself. "I see a guy selling postcards with giant watermarks on them and I tell the guy to maybe not use watermarks." How did you manage to misconstrue that? He's literally saying "Hey, you should really consider not using watermarks." implying (as I interpret it) "These are ****ing useless to us with the watermarks, no matter how good they are, please stop, oh god, please stop, why would you do that except for e-peen, what the hell, please. Goddamn." Neither was the Mona Lisa--when it was made. If they'd had scanners and photoshop back then, you bet your ass that ****er would've been copyrighted. Copyright laws are going to change again with the advent of 3d printing technology. I promise you that. When cabinets become digital, we will revisit this argument. Until then, we will continue laughing at this. As for 3D Printing... if anything, it (3D printing) halmarks the death of copyright as we know it, and I find it highly doubtful that it's going to be in favour of the cabinet-maker (in so far a 3D-modeler can be considered a "cabinet-maker"). "You wouldn't download a car"? **** you, you're not the boss of me! *proceeds to pirate a kitchen cupboard*- 164 replies

Yeah, well, if this was my girlfriend, also an artist, she'd probably be crying right about now, which makes me feel kinda bad, but the fact that I may feel bad does nothing to diminish the actual points! Except.. you know, nobody would actually do that with the watermarks.- 164 replies

Oh, also, just so it doesn't actually get forgotten in the criticism, Wespenfresser, you artwork actually is awesome. I do prefer art for the game that is "just perfect" in line with the game art, but there's inconsistencies there too (sadly). As far as artwork goes, it's actually great. I can get a bit myopic at times and run things over with a steaming truck, so I felt I had to make that clear.- 164 replies

Out of that, the only thing worth recognizing is personal wishes, which.. honestly is enough. But that's really beside the point. There's a difference, though. There's likely no immediate application of your photographs in the venue you share them nor would you share them in a state in which they could be used in such an immediate application, with the intent of immediately using them in such an application, and then stamp them with a watermark specifically so that no-one else can actually use them for that application except you, because hah, you enjoy people looking at your stuff but damn them if they would actually use them, whether commercially or not, privately or not, aha!- 164 replies

Hahaha, no. I've been in this situation. As someone that doesn't give a hoot, it's hilarious. There are too many factors to account for, including loss (on part of the originator) or gain (on part of the.. eh.. me) of profit, relative spread, and whether or not it can be considered to be a parody or malicious. If you disagree, feel free to try to prosecute and good luck. Either way, I have nothing to steal. Also, hilariously, this is fanart. You know why fanart is prohibited in pretty much all commercial contests? Because it's derivative and the concepts effectively belongs to the holder of the IP. Fanart is produced under... drumroll... fair use (FU)!- 164 replies

See, that's the entire point, right there. If someone really has ill intentions, it doesn't matter. So it's only punishing those that actually want to legitimately use them. You're saying it out loud, but you're not listening even to your own logic. That is called cognitive dissonance. Which really just reinforces the point, that you're just doing this for selfish promotion, ego-boost and added e-peen. It's useless. No-one is going to share it to others, because they don't actually expect those others to use it anyway, because it's watermarked. You want attribution? Start a DeviantArt account and ask people to link to that or this thread (or wherever else you've posted it). Or start your own.. oh, wait, you actually have one, but I didn't notice, because all I saw was an annoying watermark. I just realized that for several minutes, I stared straight at these watermarks as I encircled them, zoomed in up the wazoo, and I didn't even notice. Delicious irony. LadyCrimson beat me to it, bless her heart, probably because while it'd all be under Fair Use (also, I'm in Sweden, so wooo, legal conundrums!), the forum has it's own rules. I probably would've edited it out per your request anyway, but eh, would probably have waited until the edit window was just on the edge of running out, whenever that is.- 164 replies

If the watermark has copyright information or the name of the issuing company, it is absolutely protected. Trust me, I've used Watermarks and taken legal action against people who have removed them to get them to stop. It works. Depends on how they're used and where. Furthermore, this was not about legality, but about protection. [ edit: altered images of original author's pics removed, since it seems apparent she didn't want them posted in the actual forum ] It took longer to figure out how to get Firefox to open the images properly so I could download them, than it took to remove the watermarks in Photoshop. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fair_use Am I the only one that thinks that "FU" is a hilarious symbol used for Fair Use? This is an excellent idea, I think. With the stipulation that posted portraits should be usable in-game, because otherwise it's really just.. I dunno what. Useless, I guess.- 164 replies

People that share things only to brag or to have people fawn over them are the worst kind of people. But it's not protected. More importantly, there's no reason to protect it. That's the thing. It's really just like showing up and saying "I did a thing". There's blogs for that.- 164 replies

Will the forum be spoiler safe?
Luckmann replied to Marky's topic in Pillars of Eternity: General Discussion (NO SPOILERS)
That tends to not be very true, though. There'll inevitably be spoilers posted in non-spoiler threads, and threads without spoiler tags. There shouldn't even BE any spoilers in most parts of the forum, including this one, spoiler-tagged or not. -
The Kickstarter says that we should have gotten the game last April Anyway, is this our first Rodeo? Media people always get the game first. When has it ever been otherwise? That said, I'm most definitely NOT going to watch any streams of the game this week. At all. Actual Lets Plays, less than a week before the game's release, is where I draw the line on spoilers. I've played the beta. I'm already familiar with the character creator, how the game looks, and how the game plays. Anything more than this will ruin my own first playthrough discovery process. And I'm not gonna let that happen. Pretty much this. I'm going to watch Sensuki's vid, because I trust him not to be a retard and ruin ****, but that's it, and it'll probably be more because I'm bored and want to see if he points anything specific out that I may not have thought of myself, and the fact that, well, it's Sensuki.

To me, it really depends on the severity. If it really becomes an issue, it should be dealt with, but overall, I don't see the harm in it as long as it's either in properly tagged threads or in a single megathread. Actually, I like the single megathread idea. Makes it easy for people to avoid, too. Also, I couldn't give any less of a hoot if they're backers or not. If there's any reason to keep them out, it's based on spoilers, because the vids contain spoilers, and this forum is spoiler-free.

Update 91: Closing in on March 26th!
Luckmann replied to BAdler's topic in Pillars of Eternity: Announcements & News
Stare at her left armpit. -
Personally, I'd like to see more and more diverse CNPC:s, rather than necessarily a checklist of classes. The number of CNPC:s in the game is woefully abysmal. Hopefully new, well-integrated CNPC:s will be a priority for expansions and if there's enough of them, they should pretty much cover all the classes by sheer volume.

[480] Charming last enemy ends combat
Luckmann replied to Skipperro's question in Backer Beta Bugs and Support
If the charmed enemy would not end the combat state, it would allow you to charm the last enemy and keep them charmed, effectively prolonging the combat state for as long as you want, between different groups of opponents. I'm not saying not to fix this, just that the suggested fix opens up another potential exploit. The Combat State system is pretty broken from beginning to end. -
What does number of companions have to do with their memorability? Actually, it's quite the opposite, less on quantity should make it more on quality.Nothing. But if you want to evoke Baldur's Gate as an inspiration for companions, there should be loads more than 8. I wasn't commenting at all on memorability, but the plurality. Planescape: Torment also had very, very few CNPC:s (but they worked them differently, so it was alright) but they were all amazingly memorable, but they chose to sell the CNPC:s using Baldur's Gate as an example. You remember the original number of the NPC companions in the pitch right? We got more through the additional funding and you still complain about that? I mean wtf? It is on par with PS:T in number and hopefully quality. Remember that we are in 2015 and the game had a very limited funding with a ton of things to be developed from the scratch unlike BG which had lore and combat mechanics only to be ported. The fact that the number of CNPC:s in the pitch were underwhelming doesn't make the fact that a few were added underwhelming. Something can be bad, be improved, but still be pretty bad. It's not like pizza. As for BG "which had lore and combat mechanics only to be ported" ... all of my lols.

@Sensuki & Other Vets - Request for latest impressions
Luckmann replied to Koth's topic in Backer Beta Discussion
Is it though? At this point I doubt it very much, since multiple videos have showcased Josh sleepwalking (and not using abilities) through 'Hard' mode with completely indifferent character builds. While keeping most of his attention on talking to an audience. He uses parties that are over-leveled for the areas he runs through during demos, iirc. This. I don't think I've seen all streams/interviews, but in at least two he's been overleveled by several levels in the areas he's been, afaik. -
SLOWED RECOVERY WHILE MOVING - NO THANKS
Luckmann replied to Sensuki's topic in Backer Beta Discussion
In order for there to be meaningful con's, there needs to be pro's. There are virtually no pro's to moving in combat. There are only con's. Mobility is actively punished at all steps of the process. Furthermore, as has been repeatedly established multiple times throughout the thread, the mechanic in question was instituted to prevent kiting. If it fails at doing that, any discussion on it's potential virtues or detriments (the latter which far outweighs the former, and constitutes a "double-whammy" on movement, coupled with the pre-existing Engagement system) is purely academic. And it fails at that. Miserably. If the mechanic cannot even fulfil it's most basic stated purpose, a purpose that it need not even fulfil (kiting would already be terrible, and it's not a widespread issue, and never was), keeping it is completely and utterly asinine.
