Interesting thing about the new continuity is that they declared everything EU defunct. Including still ongoing things like Old Republic. I wonder if EA won't force them to change their mind about that.

Historically marriage was less about social pressures and more about economy. Transfer of property has always been absolutely vital in making the wealth of families. Modern times simply reversed the cost/benefit ratio of marriage. Today you are more likely to lose property in a divorce than gain anything substantial. And unlike in the past rising children costs a fortune but produces little benefits. The only thing that awaits us in the future are state-run reproduction programs.

But people are in control of their destinies more than ever before. The same wonders of globalization that cut the ties between citizens and their government allow us today to find different places to live in. If people are not willing to make a simple change of residency then they are not going to become reformers or revolutionaries. -
This is getting ridicolous, again i agree with you. Has an EULA even ever been a case in a court? EULAs were in court a few times. The cases that went to trial usually involved cheaters and hackers. IIRC the verdicts were all over the place.

Not only that but we would need to use a planet for the sheer mass/energy required to form a stable wormhole going somewhere/somewhen. But then it's not like anybody would really miss Saturn anyway. That's essentially impossible due to enormous amount of supplies required. Unless you give up on humans and do away purely with machines. But if you are willing to do that then why not just settle for Mars instead?

Interesting opinion piece on the feelings from the Kiev side of things. What's pretty striking is that Kiev government likely expected western aid in holding down the East. No matter the scale of EU/US commitment that was never going to happen. While the west did little to help the key reasons Ukraine has failed were lack of resolve and leadership in Kiev.

That's a terrible example as direct result of that was the start of second world war which resulted in fall of the third reich. It makes perfect sense not to go that far. Stopping somewhere around Munich seems like the ideal course.

Are they really made to look so terribly stupid? Nobody but a handful of extremists want to see any serious western intervention. New Ukrainian government will receive enough loans not to go under immediately and long term they even have a small shot at breaking out of Russian grip. Given the political situation I don't see how much more good could have been done. The worst thing to come out of this so far is the spread of political cynicism and apathy as western voters see their politicians waste time on empty rhetoric.

Well yes. Some of those games listed have been actively hampered by their very own developers. Blizzard lawsuits over rights to Starcraft/Brood War TV transmissions in Korea or fighting tooth-and-nail for ownership of DotA are best examples.

The problem is that it's not entirely true. Starcraft 1 became a 'e-sport' by accident. The game was never meant to be played the way it would be by the competitive community. Point 2 and 3 are mods not sponsored by developers. 'E-sports' today is more of a result of accidents than conscious decision by any developer. That is has gotten a little more popular is purely due to internet finally allowing video streaming.

Nobody will accept Ukraine into EU in its current shape. It would take years of work before that state will be stable enough to be a candidate for EU or NATO. There is no way to know if it won't self-destruct, go bankrupt or swing back to Moscow within that time.

I wouldn't be so certain about that. Certainly there will be a lot of condemnations to start with but everyone knows that Crimea is a lost cause. New borders may be recognized as soon as media grow bored and find another topic.

If there was a serious alternative to Russian gas then eastern Europe would jump on it long ago. The reality is that about half of Europe simply cannot uncouple itself from Russian energy exports without ruining their economies.

While the referendum is a forgone conclusion this would be too obvious even by Moscow standards.

That 'protect you' part was just for the sake of courtesy. No sane superpower would trust Ukraine with nuclear arsenal and especially not at the time. There was never any way for them to hold on to it.

You can't seriously think that anyone would hold a honest referendum on this issue? Neither side would accept unfavorable outcome anyway.

Depending on how far Russia moves it's troops Ukraine may have no choice. The government in Kiev should survive loosing Crimea but not a third of the country.

I've devised +1 field plate skepticism that wards off pronouncements about working nuclear fusion being "just around the corner". Sure. Whatever. It was just around the corner four decades ago. Now it's a physicist jobs program. Work on solar cell technology is making remarkable and steady progress, and it has the benefit of being useable now. That is the big misconception about fusion. The fusion funding allocated four decades ago was at so called 'fusion never' level and sadly that prediction has turned out to be true. That is also why fusion research doesn't even qualify as a jobs program.

There isn't really any ideological material for a new cold war. The difference between western liberalism and eastern conservatism is a simple matter of economics and population growth. Countries that can afford emigrants will gladly take them. Countries that cannot afford them will go back to the 'you shall procreate or else' conservatism.
