PoE sells 500K units
pmp10 replied to Eisenheinrich's topic in Pillars of Eternity: General Discussion (NO SPOILERS)
Not to bright pun aimed ad personam. There are clear standards to decide objectively if the game was successful. Taking budget in to consideration 500.000 units sold is not a success for PoE. How do you know that? I don't have much stake in the *argument.* Of course, I *want* PoE to have done well in terms of sales and sustainability, but the argument of whether it has or not isn't particularly important to me. I figure if it has, we'll know by what Obsidian *does.* However, from the point of view of folks saying 500k is a success or a failure in light of budgeting, how do people know? We can't tell if Poe was a success, but we can compare it to the competition. And we know that Wasteland 2 managed similar numbers despite lower KS budget, smaller names and worse reception. -
Armored Warfare claimed over 500k signups so numbers could be good but looking at match queues and game quality I doubt it will be profitable in the long run. Especially since they are trying hard to undercut World of Tanks.

Kickstarter for Pillars 2 is almost a given if only because HBS and Larian already got away with crowdsourcing their sequels. But without any reliable sale numbers from the White March we have no basis to speculate about future of the franchise.

If Pillars sales are in the same range as Wasteland 2 then that's not a good news for Obsidian. But this sounds more like a off-hand remark. -
Not too sure about this one. Shadowrun was worth it only for the writing. A strategy focused game doesn't play to their strengths.

The whole secession debate seems strange to me. The only reason it happened in 1861 was the heavy investment southern elites had in slavery. What economic gain could Texas hope to achieve with secession?

Might as well ask why is this outrage happening only now. Mass panics are a funny thing.

Poor choice of start date. The ending of Divinity 2 campaign may steal all the attention.
-
That's one way to see things. But you see - the crusaders would say that they were overthrowing a usurper and restoring a rightful ruler to the throne. Also they hardly had monopoly on killing fellow Christians.

Divinity: Original Sin 2, coming to Kickstarter on August 26th
pmp10 replied to Infinitron's topic in Computer and Console
Can you retract a pledge? Or better yet lower it to 1$? -
Not all missions start in MTR. You should check the docks.

I wonder how they can make combat visually bearable. It was already awkward even when every unit fought with bayonets. With the sheer variety of monsters and weapons melee could end-up looking like a ridiculous puppet dance.

As someone who knows a thing or two about Polish history, was born in Poland, whose entire family is Polish and can trace their ancestry all the way back to when Poland first became Christian then later officially became the Kingdom of Poland, I can say unequivocally that Poland has always been "super white". The whole idea of 'whiteness' is a product of colonialism and it applies poorly to a place like Poland. There were better ways of tracking ethnic identity than skin color.

Was there any word about release date for the mini-campaign? Storyline got really rushed around the finale and then left some dangling threads.

They were hinting at October/November so December seems a reasonable guess. -
Release trailer.

Anyone like that cover art? It's like they took the 'not-dark-enough' complains a little too seriously. And what's worse it sounds like they did bet the farm on Enhanced Edition.
-
I still don't get the idea behind porting Kickstarter games to consoles. If X-com didn't sell to that audience why should Divinity or Wasteland do any better?

Now that's just sad. Despite all it's problems Mafia series used to have somewhat unique identity. Yeah, this is just going to blend in with all the other games about gangsters in the deep south during the 70's. Nothing unique at all! It will blend perfectly in the field of mediocre GTA knock-offs. Previous games worked by being story-driven, semi-realistic and milking the Mafia pop-cultural image. This game breaks 2 of those pillars already and it had only a couple videos released.

In case anyone remembers or cares: Open Beta is now live. Still no idea how Obsidians is involved in this. Seems like mostly a case of name-dropping.
-
Sad but not entirely unexpected. Hopefully he will find some artistic freedom wherever he lands.

It's not really that simple. The idea of what a 'job' is has changed massively since industrial revolution. Initially working hours have seen a massive increase since industrial employment was less seasonal than farm work.
-
So a more modern revolution then? Fair enough. Otherwise you'd have to make exceptions for peasants revolt and catholic uprisings.
-
From 1215 England certainty had plenty of violent rebellions and even one successful revolution. And I could argue that even from 1801 UK social order is more a case of good colonial safety valve rather than any achievement of political system.
