  1. I'm sorry, but can you clarify? I hate you.
  2. As stated by Keyrock, Zenimax owns id Software now (and has for some time). Further, starting his own 3D headset might not be what he's interested in doing, especially if Oculus was all "Would you like to join us?" Or maybe he was all like "Help me"
  3. That he wants to move on and try something else? Here is the thing, if he wants to try something else within the field of gaming then why not use his company. Has gaming gotten so corporate that a man doesn't own his own company anymore? I still remember when Id was a small studio and I loved the everliving **** out of Doom. I guess I just had different expectations for this industry while I was growing up and it is a bit sad to see the way the wind is blowing. If he on the other hand is dropping out to focus on the craft of origami then I totally support his choice, even if I don't like origami.
  4. Flori-duh again. Store owner probably should not have opted in for that zero -tolerance program, though he can't opt out now it seem The reason for making arrest for minor offenses is to get their information into the system. Just the other day I met a guy that was on his way to a court date for jaywalking on a parking lot, needless to say that he was black. Jaywalking in a parking lot? If a cop says that you were Jaywalking then do the higher ups care about the circumstances or about the cop filling his quota. Sure, the kid only has to go to court and contest the charges but that is just a minor bother. So why should that stop the cops who are only looking for people to arrest instead of looking for crimes. It is seriously no surprise that the US has the largest inmate population in the world when it all begins with a system designed to target civilians. On an unrelated note, i'm starting to notice that I have an almost pathological need to respond to posts that quote me. I'll have to do something about that.
  5. This was only a matter of time. I don't know if I'm glad or sad by all the game legends leaving their companies. id hasn't exactly been setting the world on fire the past decade or so, it was time for Carmack to move on. They can make mediocre shooters just fine without him. Oculus Rift is a far more exciting project than anything id has done since Quake 3, maybe longer. His talents are better served working on that. Yes but I man's company is the reflection of his hard work, what does it say about this industry that men are willing to walk away from what they spend years trying to build?
  6. To hit Armor Class 0, see in D&D the lower your armor class the harder it is too hit it. Its also why I always joked about how sex works in a D&D setting, otherwise known as how a Half Orc mated with a gnome.
  7. Conceptually I support a video game starring Samuel L. Jackson. Onto the serious; the deal with a community trying to communicate to a developer is that is like an open forum without a moderator. Everyone just yells at the same time as if their ideas where sperm competing to fertilize the developer's brain (I shudder at the thought) So there needs to be some sort of moderation between the community about what will ultimately reach the developers and a person who gets the final say on certain matters. Now, I don't like the concept of a Ghost writer for this since the success of the game depends on the popularity of the concept. Unless you're talking about developers selecting an idea from an anonymous user. It does seem like there will be a lot of competing ideas and I dread the thought of what some people will produce, just imagine if everyone in the Bioboards tried the the hand at gamemaking and you'll get an idea of what i'm talking about.
  8. Arcanum would like to have a word. Although it sometimes hit a snag when playing turn based when you couldn't exit out of combat.

  10. I seriously think that anyone that get stressed by quest logs should take account of their psyche, or just get over their OCD. On the topic, the problem with long sidequests is the mentality of how players view and approach sidequests. They are often confined to a single area and moving location often locks you out from completing some sidequests, same with quest that have time locks. A quest that starts on Chapter 2 but cannot be completed until Chapter 8 is probably bound to be the source of some anxiety for completionists. If said quest had objectives spread out throughout every Chapter in between that keep the player engaged it might be less crass. It's all on how they're designed.
  11. Or a sophisticated visionary design team that lacks skills and tools. You mean a bunch idea guys? Yes. But the information is also out there, so a bunch of idea guys could do the proper research of all costs included as well. What types of personell would be required, who to hire, priorities, set up a proper documentation on the development process and also present that "This is what would be required to make the game, apart from the funding". Asset concepts. Materials. When you're pitching to a developer, the most important thing is an assurance from the community to fund and support the project. Because whatever projections they make will change based on the funds they have and their projected sales.
  12. The whole "regurgitating" argument is rooted in the idea that remaking a FL film is somehow unoriginal. Which is also - arguably - true of any adaption from any other media including filmic ones. IMO, it whether something is a remake, an adaption, a retread or a wholely new work, there are a lot more important things to consider when regarding the merit/lack of merit when viewing the film than whether it started out as another film (or book or tv show or...) Since in these cases Hollywood is targeting foreign successes for their remakes and the fact that Americans live in a cultural bubble so they are unaware of them. I think regurgitating is fitting, even though I use the term plagiarism myself. Like putting Martin Scorsese's name on the headline of a foreign film that he had nothing to do with just because it can be better marketed to American audiences.

  14. Not really, how a person identifies themselves is important but you're never going to convince me that the white kid in the gansta getup that calls himself the N-word is black. But yeah, white South African that are born and raised are African even if some would identify more with their white ancestry.
  15. The less time you spend lamenting what a game isn't the more time you enjoy what it is.
  16. @TrueNeutral: a managerial position is a more stable job compared to most 3D artist jobs, unless you're right now part of a studio. On the other hand you won't have opportunities for you craft to grow. So.. pros and cons and make a choice.

  18. To be honest I think you should do away with step one, unless that there is the rare case where a community is both knowledgeable and compromising. Because everyone will have a version of the game that is a little bit different and without anyone having the ultimate say so, it is bound to be snagged at every disagreement. Aside from the concept the pitch should include proof that there is a target demographic that it is interested in the game, proof that the risk is minimal. On the concept of your idea itself; of pitching to developers: There are small game companies that are struggling to come up with production work and have taken work outside of gaming just to keep afloat. The concept is probably a good fit for them who have the skills but lack the funding, as it gives them a sure thing.
  19. See, this is what the pragmatist in me is saying too. But the pragmatist in me is also saying that the other guy I work with now on a daily basis hasn't been paid for three months, so I'm not sure money is the correct issue to focus on in this particular job. That leaves Job Satisfaction and Prospects as more important factors, and I think my Prospects as 3D Artist are still good enough (thanks to that TV Show oppertunity that I'll be giving up if I do this) to say no to a Community Manager job that I'll probably hate. So I've pretty much decided not to do it - thanks for your input though. And you too Nep. Just being able to write it out here and get some feedback made the choice a lot easier to think about. Considering that I may be your competition for some jobs on the 3D field I might have some bias; but could I bother you to show a portfolio? If you feel comfortable with it, of course.
  20. Yea but then the problem is that games get dumbed down so much because of such opinions as those in the review. Dumb down mechanics(someone should really come up with a less offensive term) are the result of play testing not of reviews that happen after the game is completed.
  21. You should read up on the Zimbardo experiment. People often respond to the roles they're assigned to, often to an extreme degree even disregarding past history.
  22. Dear heavens, someone on the Internet has a opinion different than yours. Let's lynch him! You should had stopped to consider that since the infinite engine games were offshoots of the tabletop D&D games (and really crappy ones at that) and that the reviewer has never played those. Aside from that, the D&D system didn't translate well into CRPGs (constantly rolling playing games). So the fact that the game didn't offer a tutorial for newer gamers interested in getting into RPGs is a low point and it's probably why it drives so many people away. During the golden age of WRPG, whilst the IE reigned supreme those games were exclusively niche. It wasn't until WRPGs began their departure from the D&D system that they became popular. TL;DR: Learning the D&D takes up a lot of time, it doesn't mesh well with video games and no one wants to take a course before actually playing the game.
  23. Not sure where the humour is on this one. I think he is just abashed with glee at the thought of bully policemen having to deal with vicious criminals that will fire at them.
  24. Obsidian pitched the idea to the community, they had a high concept prepared for that pitch. Basically they treated the community as their publisher, I doubt that anyone will give you money to fund what sounds like a poor idea due to a poor presentation. The reverse is also true, if you have a vision then the best way to present it is through a high concept document entailing all aspects of the development cycle. If what you otherwise meant to say is "Hey Obsidian, I have this great idea that you should make into a game" and expect it to materialize into a fully realized product; then I'm afraid no one will be able to help you.
