@TrueNeutral: a managerial position is a more stable job compared to most 3D artist jobs, unless you're right now part of a studio. On the other hand you won't have opportunities for you craft to grow. So.. pros and cons and make a choice.

Or a sophisticated visionary design team that lacks skills and tools. You mean a bunch idea guys?

To be honest I think you should do away with step one, unless that there is the rare case where a community is both knowledgeable and compromising. Because everyone will have a version of the game that is a little bit different and without anyone having the ultimate say so, it is bound to be snagged at every disagreement. Aside from the concept the pitch should include proof that there is a target demographic that it is interested in the game, proof that the risk is minimal. On the concept of your idea itself; of pitching to developers: There are small game companies that are struggling to come up with production work and have taken work outside of gaming just to keep afloat. The concept is probably a good fit for them who have the skills but lack the funding, as it gives them a sure thing.

See, this is what the pragmatist in me is saying too. But the pragmatist in me is also saying that the other guy I work with now on a daily basis hasn't been paid for three months, so I'm not sure money is the correct issue to focus on in this particular job. That leaves Job Satisfaction and Prospects as more important factors, and I think my Prospects as 3D Artist are still good enough (thanks to that TV Show oppertunity that I'll be giving up if I do this) to say no to a Community Manager job that I'll probably hate. So I've pretty much decided not to do it - thanks for your input though. And you too Nep. Just being able to write it out here and get some feedback made the choice a lot easier to think about. Considering that I may be your competition for some jobs on the 3D field I might have some bias; but could I bother you to show a portfolio? If you feel comfortable with it, of course.

You should read up on the Zimbardo experiment. People often respond to the roles they're assigned to, often to an extreme degree even disregarding past history.

Dear heavens, someone on the Internet has a opinion different than yours. Let's lynch him! You should had stopped to consider that since the infinite engine games were offshoots of the tabletop D&D games (and really crappy ones at that) and that the reviewer has never played those. Aside from that, the D&D system didn't translate well into CRPGs (constantly rolling playing games). So the fact that the game didn't offer a tutorial for newer gamers interested in getting into RPGs is a low point and it's probably why it drives so many people away. During the golden age of WRPG, whilst the IE reigned supreme those games were exclusively niche. It wasn't until WRPGs began their departure from the D&D system that they became popular. TL;DR: Learning the D&D takes up a lot of time, it doesn't mesh well with video games and no one wants to take a course before actually playing the game.

Not sure where the humour is on this one. I think he is just abashed with glee at the thought of bully policemen having to deal with vicious criminals that will fire at them.

Obsidian pitched the idea to the community, they had a high concept prepared for that pitch. Basically they treated the community as their publisher, I doubt that anyone will give you money to fund what sounds like a poor idea due to a poor presentation. The reverse is also true, if you have a vision then the best way to present it is through a high concept document entailing all aspects of the development cycle. If what you otherwise meant to say is "Hey Obsidian, I have this great idea that you should make into a game" and expect it to materialize into a fully realized product; then I'm afraid no one will be able to help you.

Research done for a budgeting project I did a while back. Here are the sources I used: http://vgsales.wikia.com/wiki/Most_expensive_video_games http://gamasutra.com/view/news/167355/Game_Developer_reveals_2011_Game_Industry_Salary_Survey_results.php http://www.simplyhired.com/a/salary/search/q-video+game http://www.emunix.emich.edu/~evett/GameProgramming/LectureNotes/Game-timeline.pdf

well the trip on foot should negate all the calories, you little health fanatic you I hardly think so. I can only assume you've never drunk mountain dew. It's like consuming sugar-dipped loft insulation. I once drank the Dew and felt all my teeth slowly rotting inside my mouth.

I heard about that a while back, definitively makes one think twice before calling the cops.

I also disagree with the notion that default narrative settings are apolitical. Thanks for sending me to a whiny ass blog. Happy to oblige. It has plenty of links to if you're curious about the validity of the claims. Regardless, I stand by the statement: anyone that thinks that "default narrative settings" are apolitical are lying to themselves. It's like when someone goes "Oh they called a game sexist, it's just to get more hits." If any attempt to push away from the "default" is seen as political, then the default is itself a political statement. Doubly so if people make a big deal about deviations away from the default as being political/social statements. I like how the blogger goes on and on about their politics instead of presenting their thesis, which instead becomes a supporting argument for their politics. I don't know if narratives are political or not, if that is just cause the author usually writes what they know and some of their personal perspectives seep in or whether they are actively trying to make a statement. I will say that making the unequivocal assumption that this is somehow inherently wrong as they should instead write the political correct version of what the blogger persuasion is. Maybe instead of whining about why white privileged cis gendered only males write white privileged cis gendered males, they'd like to throw their hat in the ring and inject a different perspective of woman is. That said I did find the knowledge of accomplished women refreshing, the prose pleasing and the overall lack of hostility novel but sadly I doesn't amount to anything other than venting or whining. Much like this post.

It's a lovely **** off to that one guy who did an entire paper explaining the chemistry of why Tali's sweat was great, which in the end amounted to a big pile of " I believe"
