I liked Killzone more than I liked Halo

Blu-Ray is a gamble, no doubt about that, but you're looking at today and not in 2-3 years. I bought my Playstation 2 late. I got it when I decided that our household needed a DVD player, and it turned out that the Playstation 2 wasn't much more expensive than a stand-alone DVD player. If Blu-Ray DVD turns out to be the format of choice for the future, then the same thing will happen again in a few years. Check out the demo movies of Gran Turismo HD if you really believe DVD-9 has anything on Blu-Ray when it comes to loading times. A 2x Blu-Ray compares to a 12x DVD when it comes to reading speed. Although, the first few years I'm sure we won't even get to see any games on Blu-Ray DVD's since the Blu-Ray supports ordinary DVD's too, but Playstation 3 will most probably have a 2x Blu-Ray. The difference is that Blu-Ray has a constant reading speed, while an ordinary DVD player has variable reading speeds. In the end, Blu-Ray usually wins (tortoise-hare syndrome). I agree that only the hardcore early adopters will buy the Playstation 3 for the Blu-Ray.. in the first year or so. Again you're not looking at the future. DVD will become obsolete, it's only a matter of time. If Microsoft are lucky, it won't be during the lifetime of the Xbox 360. If they're not so lucky, then the Xbox 360 is going to suffer for the choice of DVD. Blu-Ray plays both DVD and Blu-Ray DVD. Someone (who I forgot to quote) wrote that DVD's aren't even standard on PC's yet (which they mostly are in Europe..). I just wanted to point out that we're talking about consoles here though. Consoles have been using DVD as a standard format since 2000. It's been a good six years, but I'm not sure how long DVD will last. Technology has a way of advancing every now and then..

For me it was like going from crystal sharp to slightly blurry when I switched from my ATI Radeon 9800 Pro to the Nvidia Geforce 7800GS I am currently using. I got much better performance, but I still think the image quality was superior with my old ATI card.

There are rumours that you're pooping money though, so don't expect any sympathy from us!

Microsoft decided to stay with the DVD-format. That was a mistake in my eyes, as DVD is not a format for the future. Sure, it'll be good for another couple of years, but then what? Blu-Ray DVD is actually a selling point for Sony, one of the few considering its rather hefty price. The Wii is, in my opinion, too weak for its own good. Great ideas, but cutting back that much on raw power is a mistake in the long run, no doubt about it.

But why are they really worth it? I mean, when I buy a new monitor, I get (hopefully) a better picture and a nicer design on the desktop. When I buy a new GPU I get better looking games and more bragging rights. When I buy a soundcard I get more functions, better sound and a nifty sticker to put on the case. But when I buy a new PSU I get.. what exactly? Sure, the noise will be reduced slightly (for me), but is that really worth

I have the XFX Geforce 7800GS eXtreme (ridiculous name) and a really cheap 400W PSU that sounds like a vacuum cleaner. It has never given me any problems though and I don't even know what kind of amps it gives. I guess I am lucky.. I have been thinking about buying a new, silent one for a while though, but they're damn expensive! It's $120-150 if you want a good one.

The Geforce 7800GS is perfectly capable of running Oblivion in 1280x1024 with "middling settings". I have one myself and I run Oblivion in 1024x768 with everything on maximum (except grass, which I keep at around 50%). Hope that's some consolation at least.

This is simply not true. For example, no matter which computer you played the unpatched Vampire: The Masquerade - Bloodlines on, it would crash on you. The script bug in one of the missions was gamebreaking and totally independent on your system.

Airflow through a case designed for air cooling is actually worse if you leave it open than if it's closed. Basically, the fans form a draft through the entire case if you have the sides on, but without sides the fan just sucks in air from the closest possible distance. Of course, the turbulence created should still cool the parts some, but efficiency is decreased.

They don't, but the link for Quicktime only is small and hidden.

A Playstation 3 will cost $600 too.. )

That's one beefy memory module..

Question: Of all the games credited to your name so far, which one are you most proud of, and why? It is Descent to Undermountain, isn't it? Admit it! ADMIT IT! Edit: Also, Question: As a designer/writer of game stories, do you ever contemplate over the responsibility you have towards the gaming public in general? Do you ever feel like rebelling against the ESRB and its policy that basically boils down to "violence is ok, natural human relations is not", or are you in total agreement with the current attitude toward computer games?

Quinntessential Player I have no idea why I use it. I started using it because it's easy to change anything and everything into what you want, but after reformating my computer a few years ago I've just gone with the standard features. It does have great sound though, it's easy to use and I like the playlist functions.

You know what the worst kind of spam is? Darque's one-smiley posts! Second worst kind of spam? Board nerds going, "Oh, you're SO right, Darque" or "WOW!! FANTASTIC!!1!" over those one-smiley posts, like they've seen some kind of revelation, when they're just pathetic virgins going ape**** over the possibility of Darque being female in real life. This post is the third worst kind of spam.

I've read that the Playstation 3 will somehow be Linux based. I wonder how that is going to work? Will they let users loose on their system? Sounds highly unlikely, or the copy protection would be cracked within weeks. What's the point of having a Linux system if you're not allowed to tamper with it though? It it only because they want to avoid going through the troubles of writing an OS for the Playstation 3 by themselves? Is it to simplify things developers? If that's the case, why mention it to end-users? I would love to get my hands on a Playstation 3 right now.

Any games for the AGEIA PhysX processor?
mkreku replied to jaguars4ever's topic in Computer and Console
I don't think 3DFx ever released a quad-SLI card though. I have the 5500 version with two GPU's on it (HUUUUGE card) but I think the next model (6500?) would have used four cores. 3DFx died before they could release it though. Of course, I might remember wrong, but I'm at work so someone else google the crap out of it if you're interested in real facts ) -
When did I refer to you?

Do you have that speaker underneath your desk between your legs when you're playing games, Rosbjerg?

I've played both Dungeon Siege and Dungeon Siege 2, and while Dungeon Siege was one of the worst RPG's I've ever played, Dungeon Siege 2 wasn't all bad. It was still extremely repetitive, but the story is much stronger, the combat is somewhat more tactical (and involving) and the entire game just felt more.. interesting. I'm no fan of Diablo-clones so I still didn't like Dungeon Siege 2, but not admitting that it's a step forward for the franchise is just dumb.

Yeah, it sure feels like Microsoft has done a lot of things right with this new generation of Xbox. I don't particularly like it myself (tried it early, got tired of it early) but I can see how they appeal to a lot of consumers out there. They seem to have priced it just about right (and the price will fall soon, probably close to the Playstation 3 launch), the third party developer support is outstanding and they've got a nice mix of game genres coming up in the future. I'm also interested in the Live Arcade function, if it becomes as good as they've made it sound. Nothing new, but a good solid machine with good games. The Playstation 3 still sounds like the most powerful machine out there, and I almost wet my pants when I saw Assassin's Creed (most interesting game from E3 2006 for me). Gran Turismo HD was also quite impressive (1920x1080 progressive for teh win!!), but the price of the system! Horrible! Also, Playstation 3 is too much like the Xbox 360; lots of eye-candy but nothing really new or groundbreaking. The problem with Playstation 3 is third party developer support. I know they've shipped thousands of SDK's already, but I could bet my backside virginity on 75% or more of them being JRPG's/anime games of some kind. It's been fun reading comments from the PS3 developers though. They seem to be surprised at how "easy" it is to write code for the CELL (8 cores!). Maybe Sony has succeeded in making the SDK's user friendly this time around..? Would love to hear what the Obsidian guys has to say about this, but the probability of that happening is.. pretty slim. I've read a lot about Wii now after the E3 is gone, and I'm worried about the controller. There have been some less than impressed reviewers out there, and I suspect that the controller might not be as good as I would have hoped (and Nintendo would have needed) it to be. Also, the graphics of the Wii are horribly underwhelming. I mean, sure, they look ok now, but imagine a year from now.. It just won't hold up to the big boys, and I'm not even a graphics whore usually. I love Nintendo's attitude and I love their home-grown games, but seriously: LOOSE THE KIDDIE STAMP ALREADY. Right now it feels like the Wii has lost already, and it hasn't even been released yet. Despite the controller. To sum it up: Microsoft and Sony will battle it out for the first spot, with Microsoft coming out the strongest, but with a slim margin. Nintendo might grow some (even a lot) but I don't see them reaching Sony or Microsoft. I hope I'm wrong, which I probably am.

The first thing I do when installing a new game is go online and look for patches. That's actually a sad thing, because that tells us a lot about the state of PC gaming as it is. I'm so used to buying broken software that it's become a habit for me to look for fixes before even trying the game. Somehow I don't think I'm unique in that aspect.
