  1. I can safely say that Deus Ex: Invisible War was a huge disappointment after Deus Ex.
  2. Wouldn't that mean that everything except biographies and pure documentaries is fantasy?
  3. I was thinking the exact same thing until " The perfect ten? A score of ten reflects a game that, within the reviewer's estimation, is something you must buy: this is the message we're trying to convey. On a basic level it's almost certainly the best quality game ever seen within the context of its genre, and that's why Eurogamer doesn't dish them out very often. A score of 10 usually applies to less than a trio of games in any given year. But all 10s are not born equal. For starters, you might consider that a ten in the RPG genre still isn't as appealing as an FPS that we scored an eight, or be mystified how we could score a football management game a nine when we only gave that survival-horror game you loved an eight. The best rule is to simply rate like with like, and use your own personal taste barometer to gauge whether the genre is of interest to you. Even so, if you're new to a particular genre then something scoring a ten is a very safe bet indeed. As a starting point, the message is you can't get a better game of this type. Let us make absolutely clear that a 10 is not and probably never will be "the perfect game". There's always something criticisable about a game, however small. A 10 will inspire the reviewer because it gets so many things correct. It will be something truly groundbreaking and aesthetically successful, be consistently enjoyable, get the balance right in difficulty terms, be technically very impressive, and be polished to a shine. It will leave the player in no doubt that they're playing something special right from the word go and will continue to inspire and amaze throughout. As we've said, this doesn't mean it's perfect, and we'll be sure to say where it goes wrong too, but maybe those niggles are just so minor that you can let it off. Look at anything under a microscope for long enough and you'll see the flaws. But would you kick a supermodel out of bed for farting? " Source: http://www.eurogamer.net/scoring_policy.php
  4. Yes it does. They have an review of it on Eurogamer: http://www.eurogamer.net/article.php?article_id=65538 I think I can live with its flaws (difficult controls, graphical glitches) and 7/10 is quite a good score from the Eurogamer crew.
  5. But.. but.. there are no werewolves in Gothic 2!!
  6. Nooo, the beauuuutiful Gothic 2 thread is being destroyed.. BY SEMANTICS!
  7. Yeah, they have an article of this game on Gamespot too. http://www.gamespot.com/pc/action/stalker/...tml?sid=6152824 It seems to have changed a lot from the vision they first presented.. like four years ago!
  8. I'm trying to get a hold of a copy of Steambot Chronicles. Apparently it's a freeform postapocalyptic RPG for the Playstation 2! BUT I CAN'T FIND IT IN ANY STORES IN SWEDEN! Argh!!
  9. Oohh, what a nice thread. I feel so welcome ) One part of Gothic 2 that appeals to me is also the reason why it's useless to try to explain its grandeur to everyone: it's not for everyone. And I like it that way! I've personally never felt comfortable in Bioware's hold-my-hand-until-I-puke games or in the IE powered Artificial-Intelligence-so-bad-it-should-be-called-Artificial-Stupidity games. To each his own, I guess. In this case I'm just bored with the mainstream pseudo-intellectual games that are the common favourites on this board (except for the Fallouts). But I'll explain what I like about the Gothic series. I like non-linearity, exploration, a good story, three-dimensional and massive worlds. I don't like isometric views, party- and turn based combat and gameplay and minuscule rectangular maps. I want to be able to immerse myself entirely in the game, and I can't do that (anymore, at least) if I am in control of six people. Or if I have a bird's eye view of the world. Also, I am sick of Dungeons & Dragons child safe environments and their predictable and well-known rule systems. I play games to have fun and forget about calculating numbers or which rules the game supposedly breaks. It really shines through what kind of players dominate this board sometimes. In the Oblivion thread there were lots of self-proclaimed "roleplayers" whining their fingers off about how to best meta-game their character. There have been countless of threads where D&D geeks have been discussing rules in the IE games, trying to outdo each other in their vast knowledge of stuff that doesn't matter anywhere in the world except here. That is NOT where the fun is for me. The Gothic series was, for me, a breath of fresh air in a stale cRPG genre. It offers believable worlds (almost at an Ultima 7 level), created with inspiration, love and true dedication. I have never played in a more detailed and genuinely well thought out world than the island of Khorinis. The game never gets dull or repetitive or boring to wander around in, as it does in Morrowind or Oblivion. Khorinis is big, but it's big for a reason, not as a filler. I love to explore virtual worlds and the Gothic series has never disappointed me so far. I can't wait to enter the Kingdom of Myrtana (the mainland) in Gothic 3. I want to finally meet the king! The NPC's that are vital for the story (the ones accompanying you on the boat to Gothic 3) actually feel like friends by now, something that very few games have managed to make me feel before. I actually like the story, but I played Gothic before Gothic 2, and they tie together nicely. I liked the story in Gothic better, but as a game I like Gothic 2 better. They're gritty, mature, has a good sense of humour (surprisingly enough) and they don't seem to care about ESRB as much as everyone else. I mean really, how often are you surprised by an american game? How often do you laugh out loud because something you've just encountered is so far out there you can barely believe what you've just seen? And I usually don't even like premade characters.. but the premade character in Gothic is only premade in his appearance. Unlike, for example, Planescape: Torment, where his entire story, his connection to the NPC's, his appearance and everything he can be is predetermined. That made Planescape: Torment unplayable for me, because nothing I did mattered in the long run. Oh, and you didn't forget about his name (in Gothic 2), Kaftan, because one of the mysteries of the game is just that.. noone knows his name. There are lots of references to it in the game, where NPC's have recognized the hero and started saying his name, but been interrupted just before they've blurted it out. It's become a standing joke within the series. In Gothic, the game started when the hero was thrown in jail by the king himself, but noone knows why he was sent to prison. There are lots of conspiracy theories about that part of the story too.. The thing I love the most about the story in the Gothic series is that it's so down to earth. You're not chosen. You're not out to save the world. The faith of mankind does NOT rest on your shoulders. You're a thug in a brutal world, trying to survive. That's it. Everything else that happens around you is caused by the actions you take, and not because you were THE ONE or THE CHOSEN. Gothic 2 starts out as if you're the chosen one, but it's actually a mockery of all the games out there that use that particular clich
  10. Harry Potter?
  11. I thought this was kind of well done and funny: http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=5058529870025933880
  12. I use the exact same memory myself. It is entirely possible to overclock the sweet bejeeesus out of them, they never complain. They do get very hot though. They're expensive but if you're into overclocking you can't go wrong with the XMS. They run at 2-2-2-5 settings right out of the box, if I'm not mistaken. They look awesome inside my computer case too.. )
  13. I don't know, it might just be me, but.. It feels like EA is actually straying a tiny bit from the path of extreme capitalism! I mean, they announced Project Gray, they made The Godfather into a not-so-streamlined product as one could have expected, and now rumours are saying they might be itnerested in reviving the System Shock franchise. With a little luck, EA allows the creators of System Shock 3 (if it will ever be made) the creative freedom that is necessary for it to be a worthy successor in the System Shock series. If they fail, we can always count on Bioshock (which is looking better and better everytime I see it). Now, if only we could get EA to reinvent their next NHL game too. I'm getting pretty sick of buying the same game in a new box every year. I know it's my fault (for continuing to support the trend) and all that, but I just.. can't.. stop
  14. Well, duh, what a surprise. When you lose your virginity you'll probably find it as annoying and nauseatingly fake cute (no, Darque, it doesn't really work) as I do. It's all good though. At least we're not seeing the one-smiley posts as often anymore! Speaking of Vampire: Bloodlines.. When I played the game (for reviewing purposes) I did every sidequest I could find, explored every dialogue option I could use and went through every locale available to me. Reading this thread has made me interested in reinstalling the game, but since I've seen pretty much all the game has to offer (except the various clans differing dialogue choices) I'm wondering if anything else in the game changes depending on which clan I choose? I don't feel like going through the entire game again if all I'm getting is new dialogue..
  15. Hey, Darque, you do know that it IS possible to end a sentence with a period instead of a smiley, right? If you're really bold you might even use an exclamation mark!
  16. I think taks makes us three
  17. Did anyone play the new Sensible Soccer 2006 yet? I've heard it got quite good reviews, but I haven't been able to find it anywhere myself.. I loved the original on the Commodore Amiga! It was the game that got me hooked on football on the computer.
  18. FINALLY A WIN FOR SWEDEN!! We had like a billion chances again, but everything seemed to go agaisnt us. The refs denied us an almost sure goal, a slow volley was kicked away a few inches before thw goal line and the goalie fell (!) in the right direction on Allb
  19. This is a public board. No matter how much you whine and troll, you will not be able to control neither the content nor the poster of the posts, even in threads you yourself started. Lesson number one. Number two: don't get hung up over the amount of posts people have. We don't care and neither should you. What you really should do, though, is check up on if your accusations hold water before you throw a hissy fit for no reason at all. Do a search for alanschu's posts and you'll see what I mean. Lesson three: no, with your crummy attitude I am sure you don't belong here. Although you seem to have learnt that lesson yourself. Noone is particularly interested in "proving" their worth to your bragging ass, so please, take your own advice and find another board.
  20. Yeah, it took almost a year for Psychonauts to arrive in Sweden. I know that because I bought it in early february this year, for my girlfriend on her birthday (febryary 17). It was released the previous year in North America. I have no idea if the other two games have surfaced here..
  21. You just shot your own credibility to shreds by posting such drivel over one of (of not THE) most respected members on this board. Congratulations, "goober".
  22. Try Gothic 2 Gold (Gothic 2 + Night of the Raven expansion) and then come again. It is 3D, but I feel it fits a lot of what you seem to be looking for in a RPG anyhow. The land of Khorinis is for me what I believe Sigil/Athkatla/Baldur's Gate are for you.
  23. Sweden plays Paraguay tonight. It's a must win game for Sweden if we're to have any hopes of advancing from our group. And even if we advance, we'll most likely face a reinvigorated German team. They've looked pretty solid thus far, even though they barely escaped with a win against Poland. Still, they did win it and that says something. I'm predicting 2-0 for Sweden tonight!
  24. But I think two of those games are available from direct download..? Not 100% sure, but I think I have read that somewhere.. And I assume Portugal aren't excluded from legal downloading )
  25. I fell asleep during the France-Switzerland game. The Brazil-Croatia game was also a letdown. Croatia played to their strengths, but Brazil.. they looked like they were sleeping. Ronaldo looked fat and tired.. before the game even started! Adriano was invisible. When they replaced Ronaldo with Robinho, I thought things might improve.. but Robinho ran his legs off for nothing. He just ran for the sake of running, it seemed. Disappointing games last night overall.
