The Case for Romance II
Undecaf replied to Gfted1's topic in Pillars of Eternity: General Discussion (NO SPOILERS)
We've had this one too; several times, and with the same conclusions going in circles. -
The Case for Romance II

The case for Turn-based? A case for TB combat could actually be a more interesting discussion than this one. -
Starting a long awaited rerun of Harvester, and giving the first spins on South Park as Douchebag the Mage.

Gametrailers - 8.3/10 A positive reception overall despite some insisting on digging for ****.

Op-Ed: Bethesda, Obsidian, and $6 Million for a New Fallout
Undecaf replied to DrQuickbeam's topic in Obsidian General
I would agree in principle; although, I would (strongly) prefer different gameplay from the Bethesdian featherweight shooter in a miniaturized sandbox world. -

I don't think anyone would dispute that (sales) for the simple fact that the intended core audiences are different. Times have changed and the market has changed as well, but I don't think it's died for these certain genres (as we can see from the current influx of more or less popular games made with these "rose-tinted glasses" on). -

Probably (likely) not, but seeing what kinds of games they've published... Rogue Warrior, Wet, Brink, Hunted... and seeing the current influx of old school titles, one would think they'd see a potentially better money maker and good PR right there in a decently budgeted and professionally crafted old school game with technical new school virtues and some name recognition. The market is there. -
Doesn't seem to concern the PC master race, which is of course very good; but I think I'll wait a bit before trusting it won't in the end.

Spill your blasphemous opinions on CRPGs here
Undecaf replied to IndiraLightfoot's topic in Computer and Console
- Never liked, or been able to fully appreciate RT or RTwP combat in cRPG's. It's always been TB or PB for me, where the fun is. - I tend to appreciate more abstract way of doing combat over full hands on over every little quirk. - I like having only nominal or suggestive control over my party members that are not of my own creation. Their decisions, hits and misses are part of their character I need to live with. - I tend to not like overt or sole focus on combat and dungeon crawling. To me RPG's have always been about the overall possibilities of interaction between the PC and the world (combat is part of that, but not all of it). -
Yep, wouldn't believe without seeing. But it's a nice thought.

It would be a nice surprise if Obsidian got a shot at another "inbetweener" Fallout while Beth polishes their next mainstream blockbuster scifi-TES - or what ever it is they're doing - which, as far as I'm concerned, they can keep polishing until the next ice age.

No romances confirmed
Undecaf replied to C2B's topic in Pillars of Eternity: General Discussion (NO SPOILERS)
Bros (or brodettes, to not exclude anyone) who can't handle it just must settle down with "nomance" just like the females of our prestigious species. Too bad. (I know that was out of your context, but I couldn't help it -- please forgive me. ) -
It's pretty understandable if SouthPark the series is dubbed as well and you are used to that. Sure is understandable; but is it really as essential as implied? I've used to subtitles in the series. I don't need them to understand what is being said in general, but they are helpful with some referential jokes that may need to be translated to a bit different form to be funny in my language, and few words I'm not familiar with (or can't make out due to the way it is being said -- or a combination of these things). I don't believe Finnish subtitles make their way in the game, so I'll have to make do. Not a biggie. Anyways....

This is great news. I like. -
For some reason, I've always been impressed with the Fallout 2 tanker cutscene:

Might & Magic X Teased by Ubisoft, To Be Revealed at PAX East
Undecaf replied to Infinitron's topic in Computer and Console
They are passive blessings. Resistances (relative to the blessing) and abilities (spot traps, spot secrets, and spot enemies earlier) that are always on. I mean, the place is chock full of things your party uses them on. -
No lack of ambition, that's for sure. And there are some good ideas there. However, a couple of years back I would've probably thought that this looks pretty neat, and I probably would've pledged too. But right now it doesn't seem like something I care too much about as a whole. I'll see what it looks like at release.

Someone should make "first world problems" meme about this. "My videogame characters have too big (or small) boobs... *sob*" If ever it was fitting...

I don't know when all this objectification and other social justice in videogames bull started, or when people lost their understanding and tolerance for fiction and art they might not appreciate, but this all - to me - seems to be just a selfelevating vanity affair, and an intentional attempt at finding problems where there really aren't any, to score some extra points within a certain group of people for a reasons unknown to me, perhaps just to fit in. It seems to be just the new hip thing to do; someone made a comment somewhere at some point that struck a spark and suddenly people "see the light" where there previously was none, the virus spreads and now its a common belief that there actually is an issue there that must be weeded out, but among all this mountain out of a molehill stuff there doesn't seem to be a clear picture of what would be the solution, what kind of depiction of what ever sex or species is actually the reasonable one that doesn't send these mysterious subliminal messages. All I see is "cut the boobs out, cover the cleavege - or, deflate the biceps and clothe the body". What is the golden standard according to which these things should be depicted? You will always send some kind of message for those that are actively seeking messages, and someone will always find some **** to say about it. What we see on the screen is more or less just a charicature of the artists vision, and that's how it should be taken whether the boobs and biceps are big or small. This **** really has blown out of proportions a long time ago and I'd rather not read any of it, let alone participate, but it's unavoidable these days.

Videogames should stop presenting human beings altogether, and replace them with sexless and formless puddles of grey goo that communicate with sign language and refer to each other as "that one" and "this one". Everybody's equally grey, and nobody's represented in ill light (or any light for that matter). That way nobody needs to hurt their feelings and no example of any kind, straightforward or implied, is given to the fragile youth (and apparently some adults too) of our time.

If that thing ever gets done, and if they don't employ any ridiculous online schemes along with the inevitable Steam, I might just invest on it without waiting for sales. From what little I tried it on my friends Xbox, it was a standard fare GTA game but felt much more fun and engaging than 4. Still of the opinion that it's grossly overrated despite the fun factor, though.

Hats off of for the effort; but if they change the skillmechanics and combat to that of Skyrim (if they do that; they're already merging the skills it seems), I'm not interested.

The Reef came from TV yesterday. It was actually quite decent when watched with half an eye. Dunno if I'd watch it again any time soon (so not that good), but it managed to not bore me in tears.

Obsidian's (rumoured) next kickstarter, what would you want to see?
Undecaf replied to Arcoss's topic in Computer and Console
What ever they are planning, I kinda hope it is something other than "Hey, we're doing a spiritual sequel to a beloved franchise from the days of yore, now give us money." I'd like Obsidian to try and stretch their creativity to see if they can come up with something interesting, and old school in nature, without resorting to too much namedropping for nostalgias or familiaritys sake (eg. no "remember the IE games" nor "you all know Skyrim"). Something that can create interest by standing on its own feet, something more or less unique to the current market at hand (not an easy task, surely, but certainly worth the while to try I'd say).
