Slavery
TwinkieGorilla replied to Crosmando's topic in Pillars of Eternity: General Discussion (NO SPOILERS)
Great idea. Give me some sort of molerat/lim lim hybrid and I'll name him "Slave" and make him wear a fake mustache. He'll be responsible for washing my back and my dishes. -
I'm not expecting Lustmord, Mathias Grassow, or Erik K Skodvin level work here but I am unimpressed with what I heard on the trailer. Out of fairness though, I won't say anything more until I hear more from this Justin Bell fellow. I don't feel like I've heard enough to say something like "Mark Morgan could have done better!"

Thing is, videogames have a tendency to be heavy-handed and hamfisted when it comes to "emotional engagement" or "romance" because it's usually done to pander to the sort of people who demand such things. If it happens subtly (New Vegas) or humorously (Fallout 2) it's fine. I'm not worried about Obsidian messing it up on their own. What I'm worried about are the people who seem to need this nonsense in their games having some sort of influence on this game. Keep your BioWare out of my chocolate.

In the same manner that any plot device affects BW's plot...it didn't. You romance her, you get one extra sentence when she ask you for a child. You don't romance her, she still ask you for a child. And the world kept on turning. And there's the rub re: Videogame Romances It's frivolous filler meant to satisfy some juvenile urge and that is all. It doesn't help make the game any better or deeper or realisic or IMMERSIVE. It simply makes the lonely person playing the game who says "I want kiss my graphic sprites" the beautiful and overwhelming sensation of companionship that can only be had from a few clumsily-written lines of game-text coupled with tiny graphic icons. Awesome.

Pandering arbitrarily to peoples' real life issues does not make for more interesting gameplay. It makes for juvenile embarrassment. When I'm playing a videogame and it clumsily and/or blatantly attempts to tackle contemporary social issues I feel stupid (why am I playing this?), patronized (oh, really? things sometimes are different?) and ultimately embarrassed for not only the developers but people playing the game and taking that kind of thing seriously. As has been said, FO:NV did it right. It was subtle and did not present itself as anything extraordinary.

If you're going to make a poll you should try to construct it in a way which does not present your own glaringly obvious personal bias. That said, I voted "yes", since I do enjoy using strategy in RPG combat.

The romances in Torment are "quality"? Really. How did they enhance your game. You kissed Annah and she sulks if you keep Fall From Grace in your party. Wow. Yeah. I can see why the inclusion of this "feature" is so important. -

Can you name examples of characters or games which were enhanced by romances? -
Sex and Romance Poll

I don't think anybody is trying to. All I see are people rallying against another lame BioWare/Bethesda relationship-o-matic simulator for people who'd rather larp than play an old school pc game. -
