  1. Nope, you need ToB and a mod to remove the experience cap. At least back in the day, I don't know about the EE. Playing a mono-classed thief in BG2 (apparently without ToB) wasn't "underpowered" so much as "what is the point?". Fighters were much better front-liners and rangers could be much better archers, and in those days, sneak attacks were extremely limited. Which made having a thief in your party necessary to open locks and take care of traps (especially the later), but given how high level we started BG2 and the increase in skill points compared to BG1, you could easily give them another class (generally mage) and not damage their efficiency as thieves. I mean, I don't think it was a coincidence that out of four companion-thieves in BG2, three of them were either multi-or-dual-classed as mages. I personally always took Jan Jansen, he had spells that Yoshimo didn't and better skills than Nalia. Plus a skull-shooting crossbow. They were kind of fun as main characters, mind you, but then making a thief as your main character meant no Short Sword of Sneak Attack, and we all know +3 weapons were both rare and necessary in BG2, so...
  2. Being pedantic here : VA (short for "voice acting") not being voiced is kind of an impossibility. That would have been all the money spent on the VA and the animation, because the later really wouldn't work without the former. This. Voice acting with textual description in the middle is really awkward. Better keep the voice acting for inter-party banters and only voice the lines before the first descriptions.

  4. You've got some weird priorities. Nah, it should be a power gained by the main character relatively early in the game, linked to his status as a Watcher. Kinda like the Nameless One's ability to revive allies three times per rest in Torment.
  5. That's pretty much MotB's enchanting system, right? Then again, NWN2 and its add-ons could never quite choose one crafting system and stick with it. I would agree with you as far as crafting and custom companions are concerned, but not the Stronghold. That thing asks for too much investment to be so segregated from the rest of the game. At least crafting and custom companions are meant to help you in your adventures! NWN2 didn't have a problem with setting up some of the character with over-the-top attribute points though. Looking at you, Bishop!
  6. I like the stash. I put everything I don't intend to sale or keep into it. That way the world isn't cluttered by the loot piles of all the people I killed. That's an optional feature that I don't think hurts the game. Strongholds are nice, but one that is as big and advanced as the one in PoE doesn't work as a purely optional/recreational feature. Either it's as big as in PoE and it's really integrated into the story, or it's a side project that doesn't ask for a lot of resources and there a few of them depending on one's class, like in BG2.

Based on my memories of BG2, I'm not exactly seeing why people are calling the Eyeless and the Thieves' Guild "investigative" quests, so in your opinion, how does the Blood Legacy quest compare to the Tanner quest (AKA the one in which I never thought of going to the relevant authorities with my clues ) in BG2 as far as investigative questlines go?
  9. That wasn't a "crafting system" though, more like a collection of minor side-quests spanning multiple chapters and rewarding exploration. I think the only crafting I enjoyed besides The Witcher's system was the armor/weapon making in NWN2, with the multiple materials. Of course, it may have been because the choice was most often a complete no-brainer... what was the name of that metal which reduced the weight category of the armor by a factor of one?
  10. I don't think that would have helped me, I'm afraid. Part of the reason I don't really use crafting is because I find it daunting. I already have enough trouble remembering every potion and food item that exists in the game, I find it even worse when you also have to keep track of the various recipes and ingredients. I find it easier to just buy everything already made. It could be a bit of a dilemna if no shop proposed ingredients but that you could find them in the wild rather easily, thus saving on the gold at the cost of a little bit more ingredient hunting. I think that was one of the reasons I kind of liked the crafting in The Witcher (although evidently in that case, crafting was also the only way of getting potions, so...).
  11. That mechanic only really makes sense when every character in the party has the same importance story-wise, hence why IWD2 and later Storm of Zehir had it. In a games with written companions, doing the same would mean ignoring their personalities, which would be bad. In games with written companions, the later simply get a chance to help you whenever the subject matter is relevant to their skills or interest. For example, in Mask of the Betrayer, your character could sometimes use his Spellcraft (?) skill in order to perform some actions, but if he couldn't, sometimes Safiya could offer to do the same because of her background, even if her level in the aforementioned skill wasn't high enoough. In Baldur's Gate 2, Jan Jansen made the Tiger Woman quest trivial because he can see through a lot of illusions than most normal people because of his training as an illusionit, not to mention his special gogles.
  12. My opinion on the VO so far in PoE : I'm apparently not alone in thinking that the voice over is distracting when the text also includes a description of the character's movements and expression, but I love it in the party-banter.
  13. I'm guessing that the devs wanted to ground he weaponry in our reality, and apparently axes like the one in your avatar were never a thing in combat. Double-bitted axe were either ceremonial (in Greece) or forestry tools. I think in real life the equivalent of the fantasy warhammer (the one with a huge head, one-handed or two-handed) was just a very big mace.
  14. Speaking for me personnally, I think I would prefer a limited inventory that would force me to filter what I loot at all times. No more hoarding of every single weapon or armor I find.
  15. Hey, I believe that even if Sensuki went overboard, Obsidian should have been able to filter out the good from the bad. Too much from him and people like him isn't really a problem from my point of view. And yeah, I thought I read something about Tim Cain redesigning/reprogramming the South Park's combat system from real time to turn-based. Maybe in the recent RPG Codex report on one of the PAX?
  16. Well, one really can't deny that Sensuki and the likes of him dedication went a long way to improve the game, no? I thought Tim Cain was a programmer on top of being a system designer?
  17. So all old RPGs are just as shallow, empty and trivial as the new ones, and their richness and depth was just a shallow facade?

  19. Yeah, I think I understand your argument Gromnir, but... we haven't even seen an in-game model of a female plate armor, right? For all we know, there is the same problem with them than with the scale armor as shown here, and we will perhaps be clamoring against it, which, I admit, will make us hypocrites. It's true that the lack of reaction of the fanbase to this scale armor isn't really consistent with the outcry when the lady priest was revealed. Obsidian's "we will keep some differences for visual recognition's sake" really "defused" us, it seems.
  20. Yeah, but the article isn't really convincing me of the engineering it's trying to defend, and the comments seem very adamant that boob plates are awful even from an engineering perspective. That's not an armor, that's a statue.

I thought this would prove that, no, boob plates don't redirect a weapon directly to your chest, but it actually does not, it just says that given how thick the armor is, it would be irrelevant. It would still be a massively stupid design decision if you ask me. Same with the fact that falling face down might hurt someone wearing boob plate. It does not refute, in fact, it says that it's actually true. And I'm sorry, that is unacceptable, because falling face down isn't something that would happen only in the heat of battle. Also, the comments refute the refutation.
  22. As Sensuki said, I think the "reveal" that she writes some of the companions is a big enough information to take out of the review. Also, I must say that doing an interview with someone else than the usual suspects (Josh Sawyer, Chris Avellone, Feargus Urquhart) is a rather "bold" and interesting move.
