Quests & Roleplay
Rostere replied to Wulfic's topic in Pillars of Eternity: General Discussion (NO SPOILERS)
Well, the reason I'm interested in Obsidian is that they avoid these bad examples you mention. I haven't played through an entire Bioware game since BG2, but I'm sure these newer games you talk of are horrible. -
If a Dragon Army arrived..

What. -
I remember watching the first episodes of Game of Thrones and laughing at the silly protection against the cold weather. They talk about tough winter, but some of those guys look like they've never seen snow in their entire lives. It's maybe a bit nitpicky, but that's an (obscure) aspect of realism for me!

I want the world to behave exactly like our world, but with a made-up theology, magic, souls, and so on. The "realism" I want is all about the world obeying its own rules. For example, a language not like anything in the real world with an artificial grammar beats a "fake" language similar to a real one. A world map that is geologically feasible beats a one that a kid could have drawn. I want the world to make sense, to be believable. I've nothing against magic as long as it is properly explained and does not create inconsistencies.

Where is everyone from
Rostere replied to Sales101's topic in Pillars of Eternity: General Discussion (NO SPOILERS)
That's pretty weak considering two thirds of forum members are European. -
Two handed swords
Rostere replied to ArcaneBoozery's topic in Pillars of Eternity: Stories (Spoiler Warning!)
I'd like weapons to have different, really distinct uses - in D&D it's most often only a difference in speed and how you roll for damage. Some weapons (war hammers, maces et.c.) was primarily used to penetrate armor and that should be reflected in their in-game properties. Other weapons, such as the khopesh and the falx, were used to counter shields. Still, if they have the about the same raw materials available (iron, copper, tin et.c.), and the anatomy of the different races are about the same, we will see similar fighting styles emerge. -
"Oh no, clothed sex scenes"! You know, if you want to play a romance simulator, maybe you should go back to the Bioware boards and discuss this entire issue there instead? Please spare me... Not the romance crowd again. If you don't see how nudity in Game of Thrones is ridiculous fan service, then I'm afraid there's no hope for you. Game of Thrones is good in many ways, but the over- emphasis on "grimdark" and completely gratuitous nudity is really a letdown. Game of Thrones is basically Twilight for men. You know, if I was in a sarcastic mood, I could probably describe Twilight as "one of the best, most realistic and most beloved "fantasy" representations altogether".

I hate how this is the stated intent of quite some amount of trolls. Trolling threads in order to get them closed should be a bannable offense. The grouping together of different sorts of people is also crazy. All I want is female armour which I won't have to laugh at, and female character models which reveals some knowledge of basic anatomy. This is (to varying degrees) a problem in so many games which would be SO EASY to correct. This was handled quite well in Arcanum and also in ToEE if I remember right. I care NOTHING for political correctness, and I especially don't want any romance in the game. The pubescent basement dwellers who want this to be some hentai cartoon with silly, skimpy armor and fantastical body proportions can go play that kind of games instead. Give us real women and realistic armour, please. No, you see, we are way past that argument. We are trying to understand if the rapid respawn of this kind of topics is a troll attempt by a real "WhiteKnight" faction, or the "Anti-WhiteKnight" faction. In either case, everyone that is taking seriously the matter has exposed his/her position like 10 times already and the subject has become stale. So the only reasonable thing is to derail the topic to try and stop the generalized "WhiteKnight" vs "Anti-WhiteKnight" trolling that would otherwise end in a "you are all uber feminist. stop removing boobs from my games" I haven't seen a single person write that they don't want to see nudity in the game. On the other hand, lots of people think that when nudity occurs, it's often unrealistic and fan service to male gamers (which it often is, duh). I'd rather not see any fan service at all to any gender or sexual orientation, or any (partial) nudity which is there only for the sake of it. I honesly can't think of many places nudity (since this is NOT a voyeur simulator) would really be fitting in a serious RPG but I will try to come up with a few: Naked victims of a massacre/murder/genocide (maybe they were raped, or stripped of their clothes for humiliation) Naked tribesmen of a primitive civilization "Naked" magical creatures, such as demons, fey, et.c. Other than these, I've really hard to see where nudity would fit in any sensible way...

Is $4M enough?
Rostere replied to Eternitude's topic in Pillars of Eternity: General Discussion (NO SPOILERS)
Of course not, but who cares about those anyway? If you want a triple-A game, wait for DA3 or ME5 or whatever. -
Here's an old blog bost on appropriate armour: http://www.wizards.com/dnd/article.aspx?x=dnd/4dreye/20120328 It is my hope that Obsidian will move past the silly, comic style that we're used to see towards the more mature photorealistic armour style.

lol what pathetic flamebait... "jRPG's and horny teenage fantasy" If you're worried about how things "look" so much maybe YOU should go to those boards and whine about "appropriate" body types since those AAA budgets will allow for such sheer stupidity. I'd rather things be just like they were in the IE games...none of this excessive customizing bullsh*t. This f*cking gamer HERE (as in ME)? would rather resources be better spent on the actual GAME not a million different PC models and body types. Have ANY of you people played or remember the IE games AT ALL? No physical adjustments what-so-ever (except for TOEE which let you become taller) and they were a 100 times better than the BS you see today with all these ridiculous make-up and tattoo options and height/weight adjustment BS. you want that crap? go play skyrim. I think you're severely misunderstanding me. It does not take any additional resources (0. zero) to make sensible, realistic character models and armour.

Who cares about "PC"? Now realism, on the other hand... Realism ye say good sir? a lady prancing around the countryside packing full plate will be many things...FAT would not be one of them. I was more addressing boob plate and the issue of having characters with realistic bodies. Being fat would come with lots of in- game penatlies. Ideally, it should be in the game, but I can see that not happening because of the limited resources. Having all your female characters being thin as sticks, with bodies that scream "plastic surgery!" is simply not realistic. It's so simple to not do things that way, so why shouldn't they? Get over it, this is a serious fantasy setting for adult audiences, not a bizarro universe for horny teenage boys. If you're so keen on the bra size of female NPCs, maybe you should go play some JRPG instead. Or why not a dating simulator.

Mount & Blade had women characters in single player which were definitively suffering from sexism (male lords mostly hated them, it was harder to get successful etc.) which made it quite intrigueing to play a woman and to overcome these difficulties with skill in fighting or manipulation. The game should thematise sexism, but not be sexist. It is a fine line to walk for sure, but it would add realism and another level of gameplay. This is exactly what I've been advocating in similar threads. The depiction of women in games has always been very immersion- breaking for me. Why, when I see a NPC with silly armour and proportions is my character not allowed to laugh out loud? Why am I supposed to believe they have any fighting ability at all when they have arms as thin as sticks? This is really schizophrenic in a way, putting women on equal terms gameplay-wise but depicting them all as curvy tarts with skimpy clothes in- game. Above all, it must be very demeaning to women who are athletes or in the army to see these stereotypes. The reason I keep writing about this is that it would be SO EASY to fix.

This. I am unable to offer any money at all until somewhere in the middle of next month, but when I get them, I would gladly pledge upwards $500. I understand some things can not be bought after the Kickstarter has ended (such as forum badge, design a NPC and so on) but I should still be able to get a regular Collector's Edition, an Obsidian T- shirt and that kind of swag which do not depend on time in the same way. I fully understand that few people have such an irregular economy, but for us who do, it would be great if we could buy at least some of the stuff which was offered on Kickstarter.
