  1. The goal of having a realistic weapon system is that all the weapons should have the uses they had in real life. When you equip a weapon, you expect it to do what it does in real life and have all the strengths and weaknesses a weapon has in real life. This is also why the most complicated system is also the most intuitive, because it models real weapons most accurately. I agree - this is obviously a bad implementation. I'm looking at something like this, only with the difference that fighters with short swords or maces could enter the "threat radius" of a fighter with a halberd or Zweihänder at the expense of being target of a vicious first strike. If you add the rule that the bonus to attack speed for fighting at a distance (out of harm's way) with longer weapons only applies to targeting opponents who are not targeting the player him/herself in question, I think we got a stable system. Above all, this would be very realistic. Is this realistic? Also, it seems like an action game mechanic. Exactly. Yes, DMG=C*STR (in my model), where C is a constant reflecting how "sharp"/"hard"/"pointy" the weapon is and STR is player strength modified by the weapon. It would make sense to display only DMG on the paper doll screen, and display STR modifier and C in the weapon description. Also, I don't really mean that your innate dexterity would be changed, only that you would get a modified dexterity for fighting purposes. You're right in that this value doesn't need to be displayed anywhere, the player will be perfectly fine seeing just the To Hit modifier and the different parrying values.
  2. But what are the Palestinians to do when their counterpart is not interested in completing negotiations? After all, what they're doing is grabbing the Palestinians' land settlement by settlement while pretending to be willing to negotiate. As you probably guessed, the examples were in reality the policies of Israeli governments: "We do not seek an agreement with the Palestinians in order to secure the peace. Of course we regard peace as an essential thing. It is impossible to build up the country in a state of permanent warfare. But peace for us is a means, and not an end. Only for this reason do we need peace, and do we need an agreement."- David Ben-Gurion, former Prime Minister of Israel "The Israeli people have unchallengeable, eternal, historic right to the Land of Israel, the inheritance of their forefathers" - Menachem Begin, former Prime Minister of Israel The known terrorist leader who later became prime minister of Israel is of course extreme-right Yitzhak Shamir, who was responsible for ordering the assassination of the UN diplomat Count Folke Bernadotte while he was negotiating a return of Palestinian refugees. An ironic turn of events - the Count was also a Swedish diplomat during WW2 where he negotiated the release of 31000 concentration camp interns, some of which probably went to Israel and later voted for Shamir in Israeli elections. You can always force a standstill, while on the meantime you treat the base problem that's causing them to go to war. It won't solve everything immediately but once you cut off support you begin gaining gradually. One real obstacle here is the unconditional US military aid to Israel. During the last decade, Israel recieved about $27,000,000,000 of American taxpayer money in military aid, all this in spite of the massacres of Palestinian civilians conducted with American missiles in retaliation for Palestinian terrorist activity. Israel has such a military advantage that it is virtually unthreatened by any of it's neighbours - it has no reason to stop the construction of settlements and the destruction of Palestinian property at all, if somebody would just say they should. The only thing which could possibly change their mind would be if the US would threaten to withdraw their support, and that is not likely to happen anytime soon. Like a famous person once said (really, bear with me for having so many quotes in one post ): "No ruler will consider the peace process seriously so long as he is able to toy with the idea of achieving more by the way of violence."
  3. Could have been a good game, and was for the first bits, and shouldn't be lumped in with the rest. It should be. It is the perfect example of a potentially great game which was butchered halfway in development, dumbed down, and then sold to the masses with the Black Isle brand on it. Lionheart basically summarizes what happened to Interplay when Herve took over in a nutshell.
  4. Quite. Mods, feel free to move this I'm still used to the time when this was the only PE subforum...
  5. "We do not seek an agreement with the Israelis in order to secure the peace. Of course we regard peace as an essential thing. "The Palestinian people have unchallengeable, eternal, historic right to the Land of Palestine, the inheritance of their forefathers" I'm curious... Let's be more specific, if Hamas came up with something like the above for their official policy, would it justify not negotiating with them? Do you REALLY think they would not be willing to negotiate based on those quotes? Would it be enough if the leader of Hamas was a known terrorist with many lives on his conscience, would that justify not negotiating with them?
  6. I think the majority of WOT'ers are significantly tighter knit than most forums. And we've all been here a few years for the most part (I WON THE LOTTERY! WOOOOO!) Well. I've been on here since 2007 but I usually only ever raise hell in the political threads in WOT, so I guess I miss out on the entire bonding process going on in the movie, music, and hockey threads...
  7. People seem to agree that taking advantage of a non-PnP ruleset for detailed depiction of weapons in the game rules is important, but no discussion? Come on.
  8. To be honest, your dad does not sound very angry about your wife, only very uninterested in her company. Obviously he is not angry about something specific, but instead complains about her personality - clearly this entire business needs no apologies from either side, the underlying problem is rather that her personality doesn't fit well with your father's (and perhaps also with other parts of your family). Your dad's "description" of your wife reminds me about a crazy ex- girlfriend of mine - with the difference that she was much worse If you do love her I think you should hold on to her and not try to "change her personality", which, if I dare guess, would only be harmful to your relationship. Just remember that all people don't get along very well. If you think that meeting with other parts of your family has a purpose in itself, you should continue doing so with the knowledge of which attitudes are OK and which are not appreciated by everybody. Like I stated earlier, clearly your father is not angry about anything, he's just stating that he doesn't like part of your wife's personality. Whatever you do, don't get angry about anything yourself, that's my best advice. I hope everything turns out well in the end. Also, you're very brave for posting this on an internet forum
  9. I don't understand, the argument against this should be very simple. Caen proved in the past he is diametrically opposed to everything that classic BI fans want. What else is there to say? Lionheart. Fallout: Brotherhood of Steel. Baldur's Gate: Dark Alliance 1 and 2. Run Like Hell. Hunter: The Reckoning. If you like those piece of **** games, then you should probably be interested in Herve's Interplay. Nothing Herve has ever done has ever been about making good games. It's always been about dumbed- down turds. It's not about "failing" in the past, it's about intentionally opposing everything the original Black Isle ever stood for.
  10. Meanwhile in Israel: http://www.thedailyb...-in-israel.html A law put in place by extreme-right Israeli government party Shas (essentially like Hamas, only they're in the Israeli government) leads to two British young women being arrested. For those who are entirely unfamiliar with the subject, it is not forbidden by Israeli law for women to visit the Western Wall. On the other hand, wearing a prayer shawl or holding the Torah while you're there is - if you're a woman. The article in question discusses how Shas uses the "ghost" of secular diaspora Jews to scare people into voting for them in the upcoming election. Between those two ? I doubt it. Actually, Hamas' Jabari was carrying an Egyptian- brokered peace agreement that Hamas had agreed to when he was assassinated by Israel, which sparked all the recent conflicts. You know, there are parties who are in or have been in Israeli governments who don't want to see a Palestinian state as well. And certainly, a majority of past Israeli governments have been for the continued land grab of occupied Palestinian land. How should you treat those? Every time you say diplomacy isn't the answer, you're being a hypocrite.
  11. So, last update had me thinking about different types of weapon damage, more specifically which stats are needed to simulate fighting with a weapon in PE, and what they will change. All this does not mention armor (which was already covered in the recent update), or ranged weapons. So I came up with a small list of suggestions - which stats and modifiers are needed, and how these different stats or modifiers should make a difference in a fight. Since we are not limited by some PnP game, we can make everything as complicated as needed. Please note that "length" and "weight" of weapons are rough approximations - it would do fine if all long swords of the same material were approximated as being the same length and weight, regardless of in- game representation. Player stats: Strength – A stat reflecting the strength of the character. Dexterity – A measure of hand- eye coordination. Skill (Accuracy) – How well the character knows how to fight. Probably a number which increases with levels, perhaps you also need to specifically allocate skill points to increase this. Attack speed – Same as the above. Maybe the starting attack speed is weakly proportionally influenced by dexterity? This number might also be level-independent, as in for example Arcanum and Fallout. Weapon modifiers: Bonus/ malus to Strength - Longer weapons you swing in an arc should give a bonus to Strength. D&D actually models this as weapons having different “dice” of damage, instead of having a base amount of player damage which is modified by the weapon. Bonus/ malus to Dexterity – Larger, heavier weapons are less maneuverable and should give a malus to dexterity. It’s best not to have minimum requirements for weapons and instead let the player’s calculated Dexterity with the weapon suffer by the amount of Strength they lack compared to the ideal Strength required for the weapon (which in turn is based on the weight of the weapon). Bonus/ malus to attack speed – Possibly same as above. Typically, lighter piercing weapons take shorter time of executing an attack with than heavier swinging weapons. I admit this is perhaps most often just a tiny difference. Slashing/Piercing/Crushing – This part should be pretty obvious (axes are not crushing weapons, and so on). Some weapons could have different kinds of damage at different distances. A large two- handed sword should be impossible to swing perfectly at a close enemy, but you can still deliver a pommel blow. Here, you also apply a proportional modifier which depends on how sharp/pointy/hard the weapon in question is. Optimal distance of striking, or “threat radius” – Longer weapons usually are good at a certain distance, but worthless against a simple dagger if you’re right next to each other. If a dagger- wielding warrior charges a Zweihander- wielding warrior, the latter would be able to have a (quite possibly deadly) “free strike” at the former. In the situation where two people fight with swords of equal length, this would not occur. A player with a long weapon should receive a bonus to attack speed when striking enemies who do not have the player inside their threat radius, since they have no need to think of their own defense (this is one reason why spears were used, and why they were used in formations IRL). Stuff derived from both of these: Ability to parry/ dodge – Possibly proportional to the length of the "parrying end" of the weapon, weapon skill and Dexterity calculated for the weapon in question. Ability to avoid being parried/dodged – Like the above, but instead inversely proportional to weapon length (or generally, weapon size). What do you think? Did I forget something?
  12. Obviously piercing damage will typically be next to slashing damage in raw amount dealt. Piercing damage would thus be your next best choice against an unarmored opponent, but would always deal at least a (fixed) minimal amount of damage to any armoured opponent. Depending on how they calculate damage, piercing might also be the damage of choice for low-str characters fighting heavily armoured opponents.

  14. Music in games used to be much better. I like the memorable themes of older games and I absolutely despise all the "ambient blah blah" of most newer games. I want a main theme as epic and in-your face as in BG2.
  15. Of course I do not support the stated goals of Hamas. There are, however, multiple ways of dealing with such organizations. If I am a proponent of employing peaceful means, that just means I'm a modern, intelligent, civilized, decent person. I shudder to think of what the fact that you think those convictions equals "defending Hamas" would imply about you.
  16. Yes, we have. What's your point? Breivik, presumably, and how your (sic) tough gun controls didn't stop him murdering a bunch of kids. The point is, of course, slightly reduced by not getting the country right.
  17. Yes, we have. What's your point?
  18. Well, there are several things I would like to clarify. Hamas is a faction ruling the Gaza Strip and not the West Bank, which would constitute the overwhelming majority of any future Palestinian state. Israel should be negotiating with the Palestinian Authority - PA - an entirely different organization. Whatever Hamas might do does not matter for those negotiations. As a side note, Hamas' Ahmed al-Jabari was carrying a long-term peace proposal he was about to agree to when he was assassinated by Israel, which sparked all the recent conflict. The reason why people are angry at Israel is that they commit war crimes continuously (by stealing land from the Palestinians), yet they are portrayed as being "the civilized man" in the media (clarification: American media). As long as the Palestinians sit still in their ghettoes they could at least expect the Israelis to stop their war crimes and negotiate, but no. As you might understand, it's hard to negotiate the partition of a cake when one part keeps munching on it.
  19. The funny part is that the "justification" for their treatment is that the soldiers thought they were from a human rights organization. It's a pity American journalists never go to the West Bank or they would encounter this treatment from the Israeli military more often.

  21. Actually, most music in newer games is ****. I'd guess a larger percentage of development time went into creating music back in the good old days.
  22. Alright, let's try to explain things to you in a way that you might understand. Let's replace all the quantities in your last equation with "terrestrial" things you can relate to. venusDistBad = sunDistFromEarth*diameterMoon/diameterVenus becomes distanceToBethany = distanceToAmbrose*lengthOfCatherine/lengthOfBethany Now, remember the background. In this example with people instead of planets, we know that Catherine covers Ambrose EXACTLY from our perspective, and we want to know at which distance Bethany exactly obscures Ambrose in similar fashion. Suppose we increase the length of Bethany - then the distance from where she would obscure Ambrose from sight would shorten (according to your equation)! Obviously a logical contradiction. Surely, you can see how this is an invalid equation? It breaks the rules of logic, you must agree on that point. The correct one would be: distanceToBethany = distanceToAmbrose*lengthOfBethany/lengthOfAmbrose or venusDistNew = sunDistFromEarth*diameterVenus/diameterSun Try playing around with the math a bit and I'm sure you will agree.
  23. Well. I have a B.Sc. in what would be roughly mathematics and physics in the US. If anything, that has learned me how little I know about the many branches of physics I have only seen the tip of the iceberg of. Not to mention how little random dude #2352 on the internet knows. True, gravity might the biggest hoax perpetrated by physics. There is absolutely no logic that can support action-at-a-distance in any medium; there is always something unseen or unperceived. Caltech, alone, may well spend over a billon dollars looking for gravity waves that do not exist. If as Einstein’s theories contend (erroneously) that nothing can exceed the speed of light, we would have found gravity waves long ago. Surely you mean gravitational waves? Also, would you care to elaborate on what your explanation might be?
