  1. That's fair. I can understand that. I think my main issue is primarily that with so many side quests in RPGs nowadays, I often find myself completely losing touch with the plot. I'll spend 3/4th or more dealing with completely tangential issues while the supposedly big issue just sits around for no reason. Side quests woven into the main plot could give a sense that you are dealing with it, you're just dealing with it more broadly. And can give a sense that the big problem isn't just sitting still, it's doing all the stuff the sidequest is doing. Let me get some specifics here. The game that first brought this idea to me was Mass Effect 2. There's only a handful of missions that have anything to do with Collectors. But most side missions are barely motivating personal crap. I had a hard time justifying involvement with people's daddy issues outside of being a completionist. I found myself thinking, "now, if this had at least some relevance to fighting Reapers, I could get behind it." Tali and Legion could be played off that way. Jacob and Miranda? No. I think tying side quests into the main quest's plot could do a few other things. It makes the bad guy look like he's more involved, instead of isolated. He can now be running a war against the local thieve's guild and paying raiding parties to attack local towns as a distraction from what he's doing. It gives an opportunity to explore the consequences of major events. The town he destroyed in the opening of the game has to resort to banditry to survive since their crops were destroyed. And it gives greater resolution. It gives people an idea of how the side quest problems all seemed to magically pop up at the same time, and why the player character is the only one who can deal with them. And when the player defeats the big bad, they can take some comfort that the other side problems aren't going to pop up right away again. Even something as simple as thinking that the only reason the Fiends were able to operate is because everyone is distracted works for me. The big problem caused the smaller problem. Or that the Draugr of Skyrim are waking because their dragon masters are back. It certainly feels better to me than thinking Skyrim is constantly on the verge of zombie apocalypse.
  2. I wish more sidequests wove into the greater plot arc. Instead of having to deal with my party member's parental issues that are in no way relevant to beating the bad guy, I'd rather deal with the thugs he hired to steal stuff for his side operations. Am I on-topic? I hope so.
  3. I liked the characters and concepts it presented. I kind of disagree with Avellone's interpretations of the setting. Kreia wanting to destroy the force was less "well-intentioned extremist" to me and more "omnicidal maniac." I happen to enjoy a good omnicidal maniac, so it wasn't a loss.
  4. If it mattered, would I be using a 100 dollar bill to light my cigars? I don't think I would.
  5. They have an option to be signed up for e-mail notifications. Edit: And just received my notification. 2 minutes after posting this.
  6. As an affirmed SWTOR and Star Wars EU hater (and all re-edits, y'know, it's probably easier to list likable Star Wars at this point), I don't want to defend it. That said, I am inclined to believe a blog that has a hate theme might be similarly biased. Are other sources taking the same issue?
  7. New Humble Indie Bundle. Honestly looks like one of the best ones yet. If not the best one. http://www.humblebundle.com/ The developers voted to support the Red Cross this time instead of EFF. Super Meat Boy Shank Jamestown Bit.Trip Runner NightSky Above average bonus: Cave Story+ Gratuitous Space Battles Only game out of those I already have is Super Meat Boy. Only one I'm not interested in is Bit.Trip Runner. So YAY.
  8. I liked Runaway. There's three games and GOG only has the first. Though the first is good as a standalone and probably the best of the bunch. 2 gets into some sort of alien conspiracy, but 3 skips over the consequences of that to get back into mobsters.
  9. The Sith Lords Restored Content Modification. It's a mod that restores some content cut in production. I haven't played it myself, but I should get around to it someday.
  10. I played it for a while, too. Seems like a fairly pretty hack and slash. I never saw what was so interesting before I got sidetracked by other things. I do need to go back, however. It wasn't bad.
  11. I take offense at claiming I have a basement! This will not stand!
  12. EA usually has good support. Such a shame they're not quite up to it here.
  13. Tale

    STEAM!

I've played it on PS3. The first one was better. Second one feels too short and has very limited enemy variety, with only minor gameplay improvements. I can't speak to PC performance at all.
  14. "We don't want this game to be a slot machine of loot" PRAISE BE TO MATT
  15. I remember it was the ONLY problem DA2 had when I played it through, thrice. Wait, am I really the only person who had a problem with the thing? Because I'm the only one that complains about it.
  16. I thought the article mentioned it being a full title. And South Park is set to have a completely different game as a downloadable in the future. I could try double checking. It does seem strange that we're looking at a sidescrolling game that uses turn-based combat as retail.
  17. Tex Murphy: Pandora Directive, Another World, Ultima 7, Sanitarium, and Crusader: No Regret. Was going to pick up the Spellforce games, but I think I'll see what Steam's christmas sale is like. If that's even 25% off, it'll be the same price as gog's 50% off.
  18. I've now beaten all the guild quests in Skyrim. So I think I can put that down for a while. I may go back to Metal Gear Solid 2 HD Edition. Or I may read a book.
  19. Daywatch. Significant improvement over Nightwatch. But I will hold it as evidence that not all happy endings are good endings. Troll Hunter. I enjoyed it. I didn't feel tense or scared, but it was a fun watch.
  20. The extended version shows that entire life. He tries it again later and fails. He misses the shot, but makes it back in the plane.
  21. That was simply hilarious.
  22. According to that, he left Obs 2 1/2 years ago. But only wrote Ziet's recommendation last month. Oh dear.
  23. What, seriously? No, not seriously. The Red Cross held a sidebar at a convention to discuss the idea that games should promote International Humanitarian Law. That's pretty much all it is. Daily Mail reported a stupid interpretation of it. Kotaku reported on daily mail. Now this news.au is reporting on Kotaku. It's bloggers playing the telephone game.
  24. Your example doesn't work, drm is not there to prevent me from stealing your game - it's more like a carlock installed on all cars, that in some cases prevents legitimate buyers from using the car, because the manufacturer has a problem with people breaking in at the factory. It definitely does seem to work. DRM is there to prevent you from stealing my game. As long as you recognize that I could be a content producer, not just another user. And I still have rights. Look at it similarly to any lease system. Or a bank. Locks on doors aren't strictly about you. They have their own thing to protect and they lock it for that end. Key locks can and have prevented use of what they lock by legitimate users. Lose your keys and you're locked out. Your key gets damaged and you're locked out. The key is manufactured improperly and you're locked out.
  25. Well why have drm then, if it's still and issue with or without? Especially as a large majority of your paying customers find it annoying. I'm skeptical of the idea that it's binary. Can they pirate your product? If yes, your efforts were in vain. It's not a logic I really see people applying to any other crime. Can people break into your house if they want to? If yes, don't buy locks. I can understand, appreciate, and sympathize with the idea that it's annoying to customers, however. And that's a good argument against DRM. But the argument that DRM isn't perfect, therefore it does nothing, strikes me as suspect.
