A very quick plea for Obsidian (combat speed)
PangaeaACDC replied to Starwars's topic in Backer Beta Discussion
I'm finding combat too fast too, by a long margin. In the blink of an eye a character is down, and I don't even know who or what attacked her. Not all of us are from the zero-patience generation. I like to take my sweet time during combat, plan things out and know what the heck is going on. Right now it's confusing and chaotic. A desperate need for a slow down mode. -
Backer Beta First Impressions
PangaeaACDC replied to Adam Brennecke's topic in Backer Beta Discussion
Managed to get the beta to run on Linux, which may or may not explain the below. It felt a bit dark, so maybe that's due to Linux too. A lot of changes have been done right. However, as mentioned by everybody and their neighbhour, cast times are ludicrous. I don't yet have a good feel for the penetration thing, as the game crashed at some point during the first combat I was in (tree-lady). The UI and tooltips and whatnot could use some work, but this is alpha state, so it's to be expected. More details, how much damage, etc etc. Prevent jiggly popups, barks barely showing up before closing, and so on. What actually concerns me the most is the prospect of loooooooong load times again. I hope it's a "running it in Linux when it's not made for it yet" issue, but already from the get-go it took a good 4-5 seconds to transfer between areas / buildings. MUCH faster loading and area transfer times was my #1 wish for POE2. If I can still make a cup of tea between area transfers, it's going to get old real fast Had a look through some assets too, and there is some nice stuff in there Lots of left-overs too, or images not updated yet, but that will come. -
DLC survey
PangaeaACDC replied to PangaeaACDC's topic in Pillars of Eternity II: Deadfire General Discussion (NO SPOILERS)
Think it would be quite the slap in the face if, after getting rid of the DLC-manic Paradox, Obsidian will now start to release DLCs by the bucketloads. They did really well with POE1. Don't change a winning formula. Quality ahead of quantity. Please. -
Welcome to the Deadfire. Backer Beta!

Is the bloatware client, sorry GOG Client, really required? It looks that way from the screens and info. But it should be possible to download games from GOG without that.... thing. -
Project Eternity: Wiki
PangaeaACDC replied to Tigranes's topic in Pillars of Eternity: General Discussion (NO SPOILERS)
Perhaps this is a fitting place to ask? I'm working on the ability pages. Many seem to be outdated or poorly maintained, so I need to go through all 400+ and fix them (!!). In that task, it would greatly help if it was possible to get the relevant information about abilities and their effects from the game files. I've tried to look around with Unity Studio, but without much luck. Do anybody know if it's possible to access the information somewhere, in a reasonably easy-to-understand fashion? Maybe such access would help me to structure it better on the wiki too. Kind of hard to get it to look sensible, while splitting up the data, which I assume is a challenge for the game UI guys too for complex stuff like this As for the frontpage, I've reduced the logo for now, and in the WIP page (linked to earlier) have put it somewhere else. That page is very much a work-in-progress, but there will be changes at least. -
Bad, bad west, oh yes. Africa and Asia had no less empires, genocides and expansionism - if not more. If the nation is not about expansion you need a solid lore reason - why is it so. In any other case there would be expansion wars if they may be profitable. Would you kindly point out where I claimed that? But atrocity after atrocity in European and American history aside, the default human behaviour isn't to kill others unless there is a very good reason not to do so. Thankfully most of us get along just fine. And as the Vietnamese said of the Americans in that long and gruesome war, "bigger people means a bigger target". The Aumaua may not like that :D

Unlike European and American empires, past and present, maybe they're not hellbent on genocides and expansionism.

Project Eternity: Wiki
PangaeaACDC replied to Tigranes's topic in Pillars of Eternity: General Discussion (NO SPOILERS)
It can certainly be mundane and monotonous to insert lots of data, which is actually one of the reasons I started working more on the layout again. The good news with the "behind-the-scenes" stuff I've been doing is that, once that is done, much of the data can be generated automatically for overview pages like all spells and such. That way we only have to insert the data on the page of the item/character/quest/whatever. At least that's what I'm trying to achieve. Not as straightforward with some types of data, but it should at least be better than having to "hard-code" everything everywhere, often meaning the same info in 4-5 pages. Then a patch comes out and changes stuff, and soon enough hundreds of pages are outdated. -
Project Eternity: Wiki

Thanks for the comments. Firstly, I just want to reiterate that the page I linked to is a "testing area", and very much a "Work in Progress". The questionmarks should be proper icons, white space removed, maybe some links removed and others added. I just added a bunch off the top of my head while working on the design itself. The code can be very "snow-flakey". The logo can be removed or reduced if that is the desire. I've been recommended to put something more visual there to easier identify the wiki, as lots of users won't be hard-core fans of the game. But like I said, it's a work in progress, and I'm sure lots will change between now and whatever design we end up with. Secondly, there is still a lot to do with the POE1 part of the wiki, and once we know more about Deadfire, there will of course be plenty to do with that on the wiki. I've put in a lot of hours over the last 2-3 months, but also have a full-time job, so time is naturally a bit limited. Hopefully more people join the effort, especially when we know more about POE2. It wasn't twice as large btw I reduced the size by 100 pixels, think it's 400 now. -

In between working on the backbones and editing pages, I've started to look into re-designing the frontpage, not least because soon there will be another game in the series. Currently it looks messy because I'm trying out different things, but feel free to check it out and offer comments and suggestions. You can make comments in the various discussion pages as well. Don't be shy https://pillarsofeternity.gamepedia.com/Official_Pillars_of_Eternity_Wiki/editcopy Currently I'm leaning towards the layout in the tab for Pillars of Eternity, as opposed to Pillars of Eternity 2, where the idea was to have links to the different classes, and races and such, kind of like currently. Looks like a traincrash now, but it will probably be too long vertically anyway, so think it's best with an easy overview with the main pages, and then people can go from there. Beneath the tabs, we can have more general information, maybe a world map, some lore, who knows. If you have some good ideas, by all means bring them forward The wiki is a community effort, and the games (plural soon...) deserve a more up-to-date wiki than what currently is the case. -
Pommel STIRKE looks like fun PS: Be gentle with Kramer, I mean Cosmo. Think I agree with this tbh. Also because I like to have the 'combat' text to the right expanded a bit, so I can see what's going on during combat. But I don't want it to overlap the main UI, or be too narrow. It's still pretty early though, and I'm sure there will be loads and loads of changes still, both to UI, mechanics and balance.

I readily admit that it was a big problem in BG when your wizard was out of juice, as they'd have horrible chances to hit, and when they did, the damage was poor. In POE, however, your wizard can have a wand with area damage, and accuracy is generally good enough, so I don't find them useless. In fact, I often tend to just let the wizard use the wand after he's spent the per-combat abilities. I suppose that is a problem in itself, and one of the reasons they're moving further away from Vancian casting now. However, for people who don't rest spam, I find the system in POE to be fun. Even more so in BG actually, as I found it fun and challenging to conserve spells and only use what was needed. Part of the RAT PACK mentality really. "Maybe I can use this oddly shaped rock in a tough boss encounter way down the road, better save it."
-
I like to play like the above posters too. Always preserve spells and so forth, and try to go as long as possible (within reason) without resting. It was the same in Baldur's Gate and the like. When we were on our last legs, without spells (or near enough), I would rest. Don't understand why people would be rest-spamming. What's the fun in that?

DLC survey

Maybe they can Kickstart it :D About the survey, will vegetarians be in two minds about it? -
I think they portrayed Geralt in some cases badly especially in the first game that have created an image of him that isn't right. Many seem to think he is a cold-hearted anti-hero type when in reality (of the books and games) he is meant to be care deeply for his friends and tries to do the right thing in a world that is bad. He's actually a good guy, he just gets stuck with some ****ty decisions sometimes. That's a good way to phrase it. His life motto is something like "Stay neutral" and "Choose the lesser evil", but it is hard in such difficult circumstances. Also worth to keep in mind that CDPR hadn't made a game before the Witcher. They basically translated stuff. Quite a journey they've been on. Just hope they don't turn into another EA or something. I was and am very annoyed at them ditching the promised Linux release of Witcher 3 (hence why I haven't bought it yet). But I digress. Thanks for posting a link to the slides. Interesting reading.

DLC survey
PangaeaACDC replied to PangaeaACDC's topic in Pillars of Eternity II: Deadfire General Discussion (NO SPOILERS)
A picture the developers may recognise. It is quite fitting here too. I agree with the others that mentioned it, that although I loved White March, having it in the middle of the base game meant balance went out the window, especially in the later stages of the game. Hopefully Obsidian make proper, full expansion(s) like that for POE2 as well, though perhaps it's a better approach to have events in them occur after the main game ends. As for random loot boxes, of course it was sarcasm above, but this was a seriously annoying part of Wasteland 2. You find a crate, protected by locks, explosives and an alarm (and each one has a chance to blow up, no matter your skill levels). Finally you get through it all. Inside you find 3 bullets and a used condom. WOOOOOOOH!!! (And being a typical RPG player of COLLECT IT ALL, it was hard to walk past these damn crates).
