  1. Been wondering about this myself. I thought that Kith would be the obvious choice since most of the enemies you fight early in the game seem to be Humans, Elves, Aumana, Dwarves etc. This is for Act 1 and Act 2 so far. Hardest fight I've had in the game personally so far has been against a Banshee type enemy and 4 Kith soldiers in Defiance Bay crypts
  2. Because the animation is directly tied to how many shots you fire in a given length of time. This is also why the Chanter chant, that gives x2 reload speed and other benefits, is so amazing for a party that uses guns/arbalests/crossbows. Faster animation = faster attacking = more DPS. The less frames the game uses in between attacks, the better it is. You said casting animation. Casting is not the same as weapon animation
  3. There's no need for PoTD elitism. That mode is in itself broken, as it's usually the case when you make hard mode by simply inflating the stats. Then the balance is completely off and many skills and playstyles become pointless. So let's talk about Hard (possibly ironman) balance. And if 6-man hard is too easy let's talk about 5-man hard or 4-man hard - it doesn't matter. My first impression of a monk (first several levels) is that it's underpowered, fragile, and requires too much micromanagement. Now, I'm not giving up on a monk yet (although I rage-remove it from the party after 2 minutes every time I try him), and will try it with leech weapon which I did not have before. If leech doesn't help enough then the class is useless because "taking others down with me" is not a successful tactic. My current party can win most battles without a scratch so why do I need a monk? People say he does a lot of damage. I have a few problems with that claim: 1. Dps monk is a liability, and you don't want that in ironman mode. Non dps monk is for my party worse than other tanks. I still remember when I played PotD how FoA ability never pushed any enemy that was actually dangerous - it only worked on weak useless enemies (and that's when it actually managed to hit of course). In Hard I hoped that would work better but let's say that the whole wound + maybe hit + maybe pushed combo did not work well for me so far and I quickly lost patience. 2. Monk dps may do a lot of damage in ideal circumstances but if he gets hit hard then what? He's dead and useless or has to run back and do autoattacks. And if he doesn't get hit no wounds. 3. Monk requires a lot of micromanagement which is a stat in itself. 4. It has no synergy with the rest of the party. True, neither do some other classes but then again I don't use these other classes either. My experience with the monk goes like this: Phase 1: Battle started and I've no Wounds.. argh Phase 2: Argh I got hit! 1/3 hp/end down. Oh look, Wounds! Phase 3: FoA.. yeah.. finally some action. (a moment later) *missed* ..ffs.. Phase 4: Argh another hit! 2/3 hp/end down. Evacuate! Oh wait can't because of disengagement mechanic. Phase 5: Fight to the death! Phase 6. Death. And that, my good sir, is my point exactly. People keep coming over here saying "I'm playing [class] on easy and it's awesome!" , 'course it's awesome you tool... Monks in Hard are OK but require a lot of micro, and while I saw a "monk enervating blows + rogue" post, I should point out that this requires a custom party, thus forfeiting the banter and quests from the included NPCs. Now and regarding PotD, of course it introduces imbalance and of course it's imperfect, very much like Heart Of Fury was for IWD and IWD2, where a lousy goblin could gib one of your casters, and wouldn't go down from a max DC horrid wilting. But that's the ultimate challenge of the game, one would argue, and it makes sense to consider a class' worthiness with regards to a PotD party. From my experience : - Cipher, mandatory, for the spammable single-target lifesaver CC - Druid, recommended, for the large AOE CC and Sneak Attack tagging - Fighter, mandatory, for the frontline - Priest, mandatory, to keep your fighter alive and bolster your backline's defense and offense - Rogue, very very much recommended, to get past that pesky DR That leaves you with the one open spot, which should go to a Chanter for the spammable summons. My PotD Monk doesn't shine very much, he keeps missing, he can't take hits like a Fighter, he has no regen, he can't CC correctly... I liked my Normal Monk very much, I hate my PotD. No need to start calling people "tools" and I disagree with you pretty much on everything. PoTD isn't the end all be all difficulty to judge if a class is worthy. It's a mode for masochists to get their hardcore jollies. It's not balanced and it's not the normal way to play the game the way the developers intended it, hard mode was.
  4. I skimmed this topic, but did anyone confirm if you could actually buy Pilgrims Crown? I'm sitting in Act II and can't upgrade a few things to "Fine" because I lack this plant
  5. Right now Cipher to me is in a good place...maybe because it's my favorite class so far. I just would hate to see it nerfed so much to lose any bit of effectiveness it has right now. I feel like any nerf to it will be too much, and they will have to balance it and tweak it through multiple patches. Just leave it alone. Chanter - I really like the concept of this class but it's a very boring class right now. I don't use a created one, I'm basing this mainly on using Kana Rua. Over 90% of my battles are over before I would ever have needed to summon anything, or use his abilities. I think if you really wanted to take advantage of being a Chanter you need to be a Tank, because it seems like anything that isn't a summon is a tiny cone AoE. Kana has HUGE intelligence and the cone is very small. I use him as a Ranged gunner support class, but he's not that useful really, I only keep him around to help my Cipher reload her Blunderbuss faster. I guess you could call that useful...I do like his character though, but I don't think I would ever want to make a PC Chanter. Too passive.
  6. Mechanics is already by far and away the best skill in the game even without free xp. Your reward is the loot you are finding/opening/disarming. This. Your reward are the items in the locked chests. Your reward for unlocking that door without finding the key is not having to find the key.
  7. Personally I feel that Guns fit the Cipher better than any weapon. I don't know why, it just feels very Cipher...y to use a Pistol or Blunderbuss.
  8. Paladin would probably be the best class for this build. It just fits better in the lore, and I think the abilities and auras would work well here. Plus I think wearing a duelists hat and some plate armor would look boss.
  9. A big problem right now is this societal shift of not taking personal accountability or responsibility for anything, which leads to finger pointing and excuses like limericks such as this causing "psychological trauma" When did people become so soft?
  10. Look, I'm all for treating your fellow man good and acceptance and all that, but there comes a time when you need to stop being so thin-skinned and accept that not everyone is going to agree with you, or your beliefs or lifestyle, and you will just have to deal with it and stop whining and stamping your feet, trying to get your way. I don't think Josh should have even acknowledged the "Kill all men" Twitter troll, but he did and that was the biggest problem.
  11. Maybe I'm just not understanding the topic, or maybe I'm not understanding the game world either. I swear I've seen racial bias towards Orlans and the Godlike, am I just going crazy here?
  12. PoE's world shouldn't be sunshine, rainbows and happiness. The fact that there are racial tensions, religious wars and other controversial subjects gives their fictional world a sense of realism. I still don't know where the TC is going with this topic either, is he upset over racism of a fictional race in a fantasy fictional universe?
  13. Not correct. There were people who did ask for trap xp. And the dev's listened. Yeah, a LOT of us did, since that's how BG2 did it. You know, BG2....the Greatest of the IE games. Just because BG2 had trap XP doesn't mean it made sense to add it to Pillars of Eternity. Personally I think it's really stupid that I get 250 xp for disarming a trap, or opening a lock. I never liked it in Baldurs Gate 2 either, but that game managed to balance XP out much better than this game does. Someone said it either in this topic or another, that the XP needed to reach the next level needs to change. Baldurs Gate 2 (The greatest of IE games according to you) made you essentially double the requirement each time. Why didn't they do that here? I mean they are adding trap and lockpicking xp, why not emulate the leveling mechanic? Doubling Xp would mean they could probably get away with giving you XP for killing monsters and other enemies, instead of the silly bestiary thing we have going on now.
  14. Defiance Bay quests, especially the ones where all you do is walk back and forth (fetch quests) need to be toned down considerably. I've been doing some Act II Defiance Bay sidequests and they are just too rewarding for little effort.
  15. Itumaak had all 10's in his stats but was updated after 1.03. He has high dex, poor might, some other stuff. I don't use Sagani at all because I think Rangers are in a terrible place right now and need to be redone completely.
  16. When I first start up the game and load, it takes about 45 seconds. Loading between areas is less than 15 seconds. Not that bad, but for a game like this, the load times should be quicker. I have this installed on an SSD and my computer is pretty good.
  17. Well written and with many valid points. Nice work. I agree with a lot of it actually.
  18. Sorry, but if I have criticisms of the game I'm going to voice them. I paid $60.00 for this game on Steam, and it's not 100% satisfying to me. Most of it has been constructive rather than blatant trolling anyway. It's like going to a restaurant and paying for an expensive meal and receiving poorly cooked food. Some people will eat it and just move on with their lives, and some will voice their complaints to the chef or demand a refund. Don't knock people for voicing their concerns.
  19. I just couldn't bring myself to read everything but I agree the game needs some balances in future patches. I won't be playing this game for years and years like the IE games because of certain nitpicks I have with this combat and attribute system. They didn't need to reinvent the wheel here, it just didn't need to happen.
  20. 8/10 is a valid score. He overrated DA:I but it's all an opinion. He preferred the banal Single Player MMO over the isometric IE style game, but Pillars is not perfect.
  21. Here's an idea: pet death actually inspires the ranger to berserk rage -- for a brief time followed by a debuff period to avoid abuse of the effect. Nah. The Pet's just need a buff, because right now they are pretty much worthless. They need keystone visual upgrades at levels 4, 8 and 12, and more abilities. They tried to make the Ranger in this game the WoW Hunter, and they only partially got it right. Personally, I'd rather they make the Ranger less like a babysitter for a mangy Wolf and more of a woodsman that we all know from our DnD roots.
  22. I have a hard time ditching Kana because that Phantom Summon is great, and Sure Handed Ila is still good even after the nerf, and if you're using Guns it's great to have around. Aloth is flat out garbage until you hit about level 6 or so then he starts to become pretty damn good, but Hiravius is also good.
  23. The main problem with Monks is they're forced to engage in melee, which is this game's most dangerous combat. Melee combat in this game is far more treacherous than any other RPG of its type because of engagement and risk of AoE. You cant build squishy, and you won't be effective tanky without sacrifice to damage. The second problem is they must take damage to use skills. A Cipher need only attack to gain Focus, which makes it safe and effective and can also be used at range.
