Invading France?

The two days on the weekend weren't enough ? Well he had me trolling him via steam yesterday... I hate to admit it but I can't remember what you said! EDIT: Except I think we eventually agreed that David Boreanaz is dishy. SUBEDIT: In Angel.

Not really Mr Walsingham, more of a satire on the currently fashionable trend of stating that developers should avoid any contentious subject matter, just in case someone, somewhere is offended. I was hoping through ridicule that I could point out that it is not the developers intent to offend, that the situation is only virtual and that if we censor any troubling subject matter then we will have no content whatsoever, because somebody, somewhere will find something offensive. Satire is perhaps not best achieved through text, or perhaps I need to be a little more transparent. Fair. And my counterblast wasn't aimed solely at you, old man.

So this is just about offending people? If your idea of manliness is making irritating noises behind a veil of anonymity, then I'm afraid I have to tell you that women aren't causing your issues with manliness.

I find it unbearably sad that the best you can hope for is well intentioned corruption.

Man, so many days to get unsteamed! I hope you never lose your temper around me. I don't often lose my temper. But when I do, it pretty much stays lost. Although I'm told it's far from obvious, people did realise on Friday.

"Moderate" Muslims Had a Peace Conference in Norway...
Walsingham replied to ktchong's topic in Way Off-Topic
Is it fair to observe that AlQ et al. cynically exploit the fact that there genuinely are healthy and good Muslim institutions? If every Muslim was a terrorist in waiting, it wouldn't be much of a disguise. No to mention as Hurlshot already did that 1.6 billion isn't terrorism anymore. It's a world war. And *checks window* if we're in a world war it hasn't reached my street yet. -
I lost my temper at work on Friday so I'm taking today off to get a bit unsteamed.

The power dynamics on those types of relationship are skewed yes, just because they are susceptible to become abusive doesn't mean that they inherently are. If I hold public office and award contracts to a company I have significant shares in ... that may not be corrupt. It may be the best contractor. But you can't seriously suggest it should be accepted.

You got here in a monkey driven hovercraft, and the reason you are depressed is that it is physically impossible for you to simultaneously mount two monkey driven hovercrafts and race them through the main hall of Congress. Today is my last day of drinking before going Sober for a mix of charities. No booze, no coffee, no cola, for a whole month. I sincerely worry that I may go into ersatz anaphylactic shock.

First up - props for having the stamina to deal with this.. but US saving Russia.. From what? Germany? We were so lucky that those two states decided to murder each other, if not then Europe would have been a dictatorship, facist or communist... America didn't win this war, they swept up the remains. What they did do however was win the postwar cleanup, the Marshall aid etc was a genius move and the treatment of Germany was really inspiring - and to many in Europe the reason why we still rally behind 'em. But saying that America saved Russia is a joke, they broke Germany's back almost completely on their own. Luckily for us they they almost broke their own back in the effort and were weakened enough not to take us on afterwards. Ros, I think that's a bit simplistic. War's aren't fought with just men. And effort isn't measured in just war graves. The United States and Great Britain both donated equipment which the USSR couldn't build at the start of the war. Trucks, tanks and... radios. I don't mean to diminish Russia's war dead, don't confuse a dramatic notion - that the USSR was some mighty colossus - with the truth - that the USSR was a viscid mass of confusion fear and blood. A blind terrified animal that could not even bring itself to acknowledge the sacrifices of its own returned PoWs, let alone filthy capitalist assistance.

In the end, for me it always come back to the effect on the student. I don't believe it's healthy in either the short or long term. Having said that I'm not pretending that teen romance is anything but a tangled mess. Growing up is about getting into ****ed up power plays and sexy madness with people _on the same footing as you_. Teens will always have crushes on older people, but that's all they're supposed to be. Equally, we're preprogrammed to find teens appealing. But leveraging trust and authority into a sex kick is just all wrong.

I don't think that issue has anything significant to do with information overload type stuff, it's far more likely that most Russians just plain don't care about LGBT issues much at all, and most of those who do are anti rather than pro. Russia is both conservative and not particularly rich, the average Russian is unlikely to spend much time being a SJW on the internet because they're busy doing other things and caring about other things, don't access the internet etc. The only play it has is with regards to a 'decadent west trying to subvert brave Russia' narrative, and anything can be spun that way; though in this case it is certainly counter productive to give direct ammunition for such an interpretation. But overall social activism is very much a fundamental of being rich (relatively), bored, 'liberal' and middle class. So you're saying that money makes you gay?

I've been fighting this mental reflex literally for years, but can contain myself no more: Does anyone else think the whole finger in the air thing looks like the subject has been caught freezeframe while dancing? Point up, one clockwise waggle, point to side, hip shimmy, return to point finger at ceiling, HEY MACARENA! EDIT: Russia makes money from Syria and North Iraq simply by reducing the overall available petrochems. Less in the market, more money for Russian petrochems. I despise being so simplistic about motivations, but the link is there.

"Moderate" Muslims Had a Peace Conference in Norway...
Walsingham replied to ktchong's topic in Way Off-Topic
Thought occurred to me over my morning coffee which I think is definitive: Not all Muslims must be supportive of jihad, because otherwise why else would Al Qaeda and friends murder so many Muslims for not supporting jihad? -
Yeah, but isn't that like posting pictures of well, here you go.... They sound AMAZING. Can't you just tell from the picture?
-
It sounds clever. Possibly beyond my humble brain. Can I suggest that your plan should incorporate training at individual aspects - training that is fun and rewarding in its own right - before expecting people to get into the whole.

I've come to believe that Putin's entire political stance is predicated in a single truth: that in the presence of enough information, particularly discordant information, most people simply shut down and become passive. For an authoritarian regime, which distrusts democracy passive shutdown is all he needs. Hence the blizzard of individually ludicrous lies being fed out by the Kremlin media. They don't need to make us believe the Kremlin, they just need to make us tired of talking about the issues. Hence, the gay rights issue is useful in two ways: it gives spurious reassurance to the notion that Putin stands for Russian nationalist independence from Western thought; and it divides discussion time ion forums like this. I don't mean to belittle what Putin is doing, and excusing against LGBT people. But the real issue is what he's done to the ENTIRE Russian people and culture.
