Music is degraded to *MONO* 10kHz @ 48 kbit/s?!
Antagonist replied to markussun's topic in Star Wars: General Discussion
I'm not sure if it is worth posting but I wrote Mrs. Bihr a respectful mail asking for some kind of patch which delivers high-quality music. Hopefully it will do some good. -
If you haven't played BG1 yet, I'd start with that. The magic is the most complicated part of computer AD&D, and due to the low level cap in BG1 you won't be confronted with tough mage fights like in BGII, which basically expect that you know which spells you must use in order to have a remote chance. The story in BG1 is also very linear and told in small digestable parts, yet interesting enough to keep you interested in playing. IWD is the logical next step as it introduces higher levels but the fights are not terribly difficult, story is again linear but intriguing. BG II and IWD II are best left for players who already know how AD&D works, plus IWD II does not use the AD&D ruleset, but DnD 3d edition. PS:T is a game for itsself. As others have already mentioned, you either hate it or love it. Combat is so ridiciouly easy that you can almost win each fight with minimal knowledge about the rules. It's strength lies in deep NPCs and the most fascinating setting ever in a D&D game, so you don't really need the experience from the other games. Finally I'd recommend that you play all of them at least once. Great legaciy from the Infinity Engine era.

What is beyond the "Outer Rim"?
Antagonist replied to Cerebus's topic in Star Wars: General Discussion
It's really a shame that Obsidian was unwise enough to navigate itsself into a corner by having again a > level 20 character at the end. If they had planned accordingly and dared to disappoint the powergamers they would have scaled the game to be about 5-8 levels max, so you could play the exile in part III and would not cause headaches by either downgrading the exiles or having TWO characters which must be covered with different variables. And I stronly disagree about abondining the present storyline. For better or worse, the deceided to make it an trilogy at the last moment and now I want to be able to learn the rest of the story. Otherwise TSL would eternally end in this unexplained black hole which is a shame. Does anybody remember Bioforge ? They also had a cliffhanger ending but the sequel was discontinued by EA, therefore it irks me to the very day that I will never know what happend to my freaky character who managed to escape his prison at last second. Star Wars offers many opportunities to make another RPGs in it, which don't have to be called "KotOR". -
What is beyond the "Outer Rim"?
Antagonist replied to Cerebus's topic in Star Wars: General Discussion
Huh ? Did I miss something ? As far as I understand Revan and the Exile went into unexplored territory. Somewhere far, far away from the known space is supposedly an ancient Sith empire and Korriban and Malakkor 5 are only border worlds which where abondoned long time ago. Their journey is strongly symbolic. They leave all their worldly "possesions" to be cleansed to achieve enlightment, which they will certainly need since this "true Sith" are told to be incredibly powerful. -

A Jedi Eats, Shoots & Leaves

Hey, what does THAT mean ? As a non-native speaker I really appreciate formal english in games. It is a good method to improve your english if you are too lazy to read books about grammar. " -
As a regular reader of both RPGCodex and this forum I tend to believe that it would be an interesting social experiment to confront the Codexers with a mass of new members emgrating from this board. I think the results would be hilarious. On topic, It would be really sad if we loose any means of communicating publicly with Obsidian Entertainment. Although I don't post much I visit this boards daily for my dose of new infos and some interesting discussions. To be taken serious Obsidian should also be able to deal with negative criticism, especially regarding KotOR 2. There may be some immature posters, but I have also read tons of well written and civil arguments. One can argue wether it is really necessary to have an own message board, but alienating your customer base is seldom a good thing. So Mr. Urquahart, please overthink your decision and refrain from installing a community manager which is as I suspect an opinion manager in reality.

Is the game executable by any chance modified ? Sometimes cracked or infected executables produce a different checksum and are therefore not recognized by patches which use some kind of autoupdate. Or reinstall the game. I think the patch has problems if it can not determine the correct path to the Bloodlines installation folder from the registry. I'd would try to unpack the official patch and move the files to the according files manually, although I don't know if it can be done. Sorry if I could not be any more helpful.

don't call it "content patch",
Antagonist replied to poolofpoo's topic in Star Wars: General Discussion
The whole issue with the XBox being unable to patch content is really disheartening. I do not own a console, but I think I read the the XBox is outfitted with a rather large harddrive. Why is it not possible to patch the game like the PC, i.e. by overwriting old files and introducing new ones ? I don't fully grasp the technical limitations of the XBox, which is supposed to be very similar to a PC. It would be very risky to develop a PC only content patch, as I expect that a major part of XBox customers would refuse to buy any other Obisidan product in the near future, and honestly, I think I would, too. Although there is not much in denying that the game was rushed as it clearly shows. Only solution I see to this problem is to ship updated versions to registered XBox KotOR 2 owners for a price which would only cover their costs without any profit margin. -
Did Lucas say No to the content patch
Antagonist replied to Degage's topic in Star Wars: General Discussion
I bought every game I own in the last five years to support the companies which I like but to be honest, IF LucasArts would make some kind of Special Edition I would pirate the game. I am not willing to pay for content which should have been clearly in the current version. Furthermore, by paying for the intended version of the game I would only encourage LucasArts to make such moneygrabs in the future. As sad as it may be that Obsidian was forced to waste so much potential with TSL I would rather have no new content at all than having to be robbed by the publisher. No game is worth 100 bucks. -
And it must be a refreshing change to work on a title that will be released for once Since the game is also ported to PC, are there any modifications to the UI planned or does the head honcho Mr. Sawyer recommend to buy a gamepad ? I rarely play games which depend on such input device and I think it would be quite useful to go for an optimized mouse/keyboard control if possible.

Perhaps it is my lack of imagination, but I fail to see how good squad based RPGs can work in 3D. It's like chess playing in first person mode, it can be done but it makes overview of your tactical options a lot more difficult, even in the future game designers will abondon the concept of player controlled party members. Try playing Guild Wars with a human party in first person and you will quickly realize that FP is only ONE viable option for SPECIFIC games.

Without pointing at anybody specifically, I'd like to ask all parties involved to avoid posting spoilers. Even hinted events can lead people like me who haven't finished the game yet to draw the right conclusions and maybe destroy the suspension of discovering things for themselves. Thank you !

I guess everbody heard the news by now, but I shall post this nonetheless. This is taken from the RPG Codex: Too bad, despite all their design flaws and bugs I really liked Bloodlines and found Arcanum very entertaining. Even if many people have mixed feelings about Troika I don't think that it's a good sign for the RPG market that have higher aspirations than Bioware.

Games just came, which do I play first?

It is known that the official patch screws the 2 disk edition badly but I never heard that there were any problems with the fixpack other then some internal bugs. -

Thanks for the good news ! -
Couldn't Interplay have the dignity to wait with going bancrupt until Obisidian has earned enough money to buy the Fallout license ? Even at the bitter end Herve Caen totally screwed things.

Kotor was a fun game and I never really regreted buying it, but it's story was too predictable, especially if you played, or rather endured, NwN before, as Kotor's plot was a carbon copy of NwN's. Even without this knowledge they used too much foreshadowing. By the time I reached Dantooine I had a definite suspicion who my character was and some NPCs were really annoying. But the locations were great, especially the water world and the sith planet. Plus, Bioware made it possible to play an evil character which was not really possible in their earlier games even if you could only play a thug. I am REALLY curious about Kotor 2. I expect some flaws due to the short development cycle but it should hint if MCA was an one-hit-wonder or not.

I'd definitely recommend Platter's Torment FixPack and all his other mods like MaxHP and Cities Explored. If you decide to use the Fixpack do it now because it only works if you haven't visited a specific area which includes fixes yet. Do NOT install the following files: 1501ATTA.BCS 1501HARG.BCS 1501CS1.BCS 1501CS4.BCS They are bugged and I have been in contact with Platter who confirmed it. -
So....I'm gonna replay the Baldur's Gate series.

Only thing that comes to my mind is The Grey Clan Episode I: The Last Breath of the Past. I don't think there are major new content mods except the NPC Project. And as far as I know Tutu breaks most original BG1 mods during conversion, except the Baldurdash Fixpack. -
Half-Life Source looks worse than the Original with the High Definition Pack. Judge yourself ! The Beauty: Original Half-Life with HD Pack and the Beast: Half-Life Source

Antagonist replied to Ivan the Terrible's topic in Computer and Console
Tutu is less buggy since the release of the Tutu Fixpack. You might still run into bugs, but I think the showstoppers are gone, so you should be fine playing it. There are still some problems with spawning of monsters, meaning sometimes there will be really difficult ones although you are low-level and do not have a full party. I read that it has something to do that the engine ignores for some reason level and partysize, but you should be fine if you know the IE games and it provides additional challenge. The banter pack is call BG1 NPC Project and is a really great addition to Tutu. It provides hundreds of dialogues and interjections like in BGII and makes the NPCs FAR more interesting. Highly recommendable. You can get it at Gibberlings Three. -

Antagonist replied to Ivan the Terrible's topic in Computer and Console
I'd check most mods on Gibberlings Three and Pocketplane Group. There are many great mods, ranging from pure rule modifications to new well-developed NPCs and additional content like new and altered quests for both parts. For Baldur's Gate I exists the gread Tutu Converter, which converts BG I to the BG II engine, so you can use all new classes, graphics and resolution (you WILL love the BG II walking speed). If you plan to use that, don't forget to download the Tutu Fixpack and the Tutu Tweak Pack. Oh, and before installing any mods (or before any conversion) make sure to install both Baldurdash fixpacks.
