Icewind Dale Revisited - GameBanshee Feature
GreasyDogMeat replied to funcroc's topic in Computer and Console
"So there is hope after all" Not for another GOOD Icewind Dale game. If another IWD is made it will be a X-Box 360 diablo style action RPG like Baldur's Gate Dark Alliance. -
WORST character models ever...
GreasyDogMeat replied to playing2much4u's topic in Computer and Console
Whether or not the elves are true to their source, (The more true to the source the better IMHO so kudos there), most of the models in this game are very disapointing. As the original poster mentioned, there is a playdough look to all the characters, more so than any game I've played that has had complaints of 'doughy' or 'plastic' looks to characters. I think people are getting side tracked from the main issue of the poor models with the elves specifically. The elves are just more noticable because they don't necesarrily conform to the 'cute elf' stereotype. The real problem is all of the models are disapointing. My biggest problem with NWN 2 is that visually, it looks behind the times yet it is a very demanding game on your system. I can live with older or poor graphics, hell I still play SSI classics, but I can't stand a game that both looks dated yet strains my system as if it were a massive graphical next gen DX10 powerhouse. I can get a fairly decent frame rate out of NWN 2 by turning many features off but it is a bit ridiculous. Even with most settings off certain areas like Port Llast run very poorly with all the npcs going about their business. It is just disapointing that too many characters on screen that don't even look that good can hurt the performance so much. -
Icewind Dale Revisited - GameBanshee Feature
GreasyDogMeat replied to funcroc's topic in Computer and Console
I'm kind of surprised that HoW recieved so much crticism for it's short length, mainly because the original Baldur's Gate recieved a very short expansion that if nothing else, felt shorter than HoW. I remember one store was selling Tales of the Sword Coast for 50 bucks. I wasn't crazy enough to pay that amount for a small expansion that added a werewolf island, a keep and a few other upgrades. Wish Bioware had released something like Trials of the Luremaster for TotSC. -
I can't help but wonder if Star Wars Episode 3 recieved even HALF the attention for it's 'You're either with me or against me!' jab. I thought it was a cheap shot but it didn't kill the movie for me. It was about... well... star wars. Whether or not 300 has any political message hidden in it shouldn't detract from it being an entertaining movie... or not (I haven't seen it yet). One thing I do know is that the 'with me or against me' was an obvious and admitted jab while all of the talk of political agendas in 300 seem to be highly suspect/debated. Either way the battle of Thermopylae was perhaps the greatest 'alamo' moment in history and I'm looking forward to seeing it, even if it is full of historical innacuracies and stylized to heck. The old John Wayne Alamo movie was hardly realistic either. My only real worry about seeing it is the possible lame dialog. Sin City reeked of horrible dialog and lowered the enjoyment of the movie for me. I think a previous poster mentioned that Miller's words are better read on the comic page than heard on the big screen. Cheesy dialog might be a bit more acceptable in a movie about a last stand in 480 BC than a noir type comic adaption. Oh well, I'll find out eventually.

'Duel wielding swords does not make you a Drizzt clone.' Neither does choosing a black panther as your animal companion and naming it Guenhwyvar... right guys?

Is this a waste of taxpayers time and money?

If it was getting so bad, why the hell didn't the father restrict e-mail access. Or better yet, why didn't the kid stop logging in. Was getting e-mail a major part of his existence that he couldn't do without??? -
Do you prefer the Fantasy genre for CRPG's ?
GreasyDogMeat replied to Kaftan Barlast's topic in Computer and Console
I prefer a sci fi setting but since it isn't a common setting in CRPGs it usually isn't a choice. Off the top of my head I can only think of a few pure sci fi CRPGs, the old gold box Buck Rogers games, Fallout and Deus Ex. I'm not even sure you can consider Deus Ex CRPG. If the story is well told and it involves you well then it doesn't really matter whether it is Sci Fi, Fantasy or a combination of the two like the KoTOR series or Arcanum. Originally, I HATED fantasy games. Wouldn't touch them with a 10 foot poll. Then Baldur's Gate came out. It was after Fallout and Fallout had convinced me that RPGs could be a fun genre. So I thought, even though it was fantasy and had elves and dwarves, I would give Baldur's Gate a try. Fallout and Baldur's Gate were 2 of the best gaming 'chances' I took and I've been trying RPGs ever since. The reason it has been so easy to keep getting these D&D RPGs like Icewind Dale, Planescape, Baldur's Gate, Neverwinter Nights etc, is because I keep finding high quality storytelling and gameplay in these games. However, sometimes a game comes along that reminds me why I used to avoid RPGs and fantasy settings. One particular game was Temple of Elemental Evil. While I enjoy D&D remakes of old modules and games, the storytelling and writing in the game was horrendous. It sucked all of the fun of the fantasy genre out. It did have a few good points... I liked the turn based combat, the graphics and the music... but it was without soul. I think thats one reason I like Sci Fi a bit more than Fantasy. If you take away the good writing and story from a Sci-Fi CRPG, you still have guns and space aliens to blast. If you take away the story and writing from a fantasy game, well you don't have much. -
Kotor 2 Mods Discussion
GreasyDogMeat replied to CoM_Solaufein's topic in Star Wars: General Discussion
Its the full thing of the droid factory (NOT the world). Unlike the TSL Restoration Project, it contains unofficial added things like a new droid companion who replaces GOTO among other changes. I'm personally more interested in the Restoration Project version as it focuses on restoring 'official' cut content without really forcing other fan made stuff on you. -
They absolutly need to make a Punisher sequel, only this time with non-stop action. That last battle was feakin' sweet! Funny thing about Planes, Trains & Automobiles: The movie recieved a R rating, but this rating was recieved only for a single scene involving Steve Martin cursing at a rent-a-car lady. The movie was on the abc family channel not to long ago and the only scene edited/removed was this scene. I think it is just such an oddity that 99.9% of a movie is PG material but a single 30 second scene got the movie a hard 'R'.

I felt that way about RPGs before I played Fallout and Baldur's Gate. An RPG doesn't have to involve xp farming of the same creatures over and over or nonsense quests. In RPGs like the Baldur's Gate. KoTOR or Fallout series have excellent storytelling between decent strategic combat that, for the most part, isn't a repetitive 'wonder the wilderness killing the same creature over and over so you can reach level x and advance the story' deal. It sounds to me like the guy hates japanese style RPGs, and I would have to agree with him. They are incredibly linear games with very goofy stories involving 'gaia' this and 'sun energy' that involving incredibly annoying random encounters that fire up every 5 steps. I remember trying a bit of a final fantasy game: In one dungeon alone, literally every step I'd take I'd run into a random encounter that involved the exact same group of enemies over and over. Good RPGs find that perfect balance between story telling and combat, never burning you out on repetitious combat and always rewarding you wtih a good chunk of story and a plot twist here and there.

I wish they hadn't killed of Nina Myers. She was my favorite characer and I loved the chemistry between Jack and her (Or lack of depending on your viewpoint). I wish they had kept her around as thorn in Jack's side. Its funny, as evil as she got I never hated her character and I always enjoyed it when she pulled off some plan. Atleast she went out kicking ass . Then stupid jack had to shoot her.

I don't know why I watch movies anymore. Reality is turning into a day time soap opera! -The Crocodile Hunter dying from a super rare fatal stingray strike. -Border patrol officers shooting a drug smuggler. The officers are then ARRESTED for defending themselves and protecting our country from these scum bags, then they go to prison! With someone in the gov lying that these officers were 'out to shoot mexicans'. Why the hell would he do this?? Hates these officers? Involved with the drug smuggler(s)? Government conspiracy? -About 5 or so celebrities making asses of themselves and then going into rehab. -Sky divers involved in a love triangle. One female sky diver tampers with the other's parachute so she goes splat. -Diaper wearing astronaut stalking another woman in an astronaut love triangle and possibly attempting murder. -Anna Nicole's son dying in odd drug circumstances, then the soap opera concerning 'who's da daddy' of her daughter. Now, she dies in odd circumstances. What happened to the days when these nutty stories happened maybe once a year? What the heck is next in the insane show of real life? "Stay tuned for the shocking revelation as Tom Cruise announces he is an alien from Alpha Centuri!".

I like the show enough that it isn't good enough unless it is on high quality dvd and I like watching the show a few episodes at a time. I hate having to wait a week and it is just easier and more convenient to wait for it on DVD.
-
I haven't seen anything past the first 4 episodes of season 6, whcih came out on a dvd. I just can't catch the show on it's standard air time and I hate watching TV shows on... TV. Hopefully they will continue to release season 6 on DVD as it goes along. 24 has really had some ups and downs. Every season has had some great moments and some lame things. Season 1 and the mother's amnesia. Season 2 and Kim CONSTANTLY getting into ridiculous trouble. OMG a mountain lion! I don't think any of the following seasons have reached the goofiness that the first two had. Really, Season 2 started to feel like a comedy act. Oh golly, what is that crazy Kim going to get into this week?

'The Descent' First half or so of the movie was incredibly boring. Just getting to know the ladies so their possible future deaths might have some meaning. Unfortunatly it was dull and I could care less. Once they finally meet the creature it actually became a pretty decent horror movie. I jumped like a jack rabbit hooked up to an electrode when the creature was standing by them in the bone pile. Unfortunatly the end of the movie was a complete rip off of an old Twilight Zone episode.

"You buttered your bread. Now sleep in it." I've heard, 'You have made your bed, now sleep in it.' and 'You have buttered your bread, now eat it.' but never a combination of the two.

Best weapon for home defense, I've heard from multiple sources, is a revolver. Reliable, can be left sitting around for years picked up and used quickly. "Go ahead punk, make my day." :D

Considering my system can handle Oblivion and just about every other recent high quality game at max settings with few problems I think it is NWN 2 that has the problem. NWN 2 just doesn't look that impressive compared with it's poor FPS with graphics maxed. Maybe it is some setting on my system, but I just don't get how other graphical monster games can run smoothly on my system while NWN 2 dies with too much going on or if I dare turn shadows on with a high resolution. People have complained about performance from customers to major review sites so I think there must be some validity to the claims. Also, I'm not sure what you mean by 'unless you got 1 and 2 swapped'. Are you talking about the list of little effects that NWN 1 had that NWN 2 didn't? All of the effects I listed are completly absent from NWN 2 unless I've missed some setting or mod. For instance, arrows do not stick to the environment or enemies at all in NWN 2. I don't see how I swapped any of those complaints...
-
K, no spoilers. Cons - cause I like to talk about them first, great game or not. -The engine unfortunatly sucks. The game at it's highest graphical settings still looks like a 2 year old game yet runs like it is a DX 10 monster. -A huge leap back in special effects from NWN 1. I'm not talking about graphics, as it is a big improvement (still not big enough IMHO), but in effects like: NWN 1 = water splashes as you walk through NWN 2 = water remains static with no 'reaction' to walking through it. NWN 1 = People move their heads to look at who they are talking to/what you point your cursor at. IE Halflings look up to a human and talk to them. NWN 2 = People always look dead straight again. If you are playing a human talking to a halfling they talk straight ahead to your crotch. NWN 1 = Arrows stick to the environment/enemies shot. NWN 2 = Arrows stick to nothing and 'explode' upon impact with any sruface. NWN 1 = During battle, characters clash together creating sparks and make other feints. NWN 2 = You are lucky if you get an animation of your character shifting their weapon during combat. One person sings, then the next. NWN 1 = Clothing and hair bounces and shifts. NWN 2 = Clothing/hair doesn't move whatsoever. -Extremly poor inventory system with no auto management. While some people are happy with Infinity Engine inventory style, I think it is time to revamp it. Not only is it old style manage it yourself but the icons are tiny and difficult to see. -A few of the characters need some serious additions. From the start to the end you get the same questions with few new questions added. -While the outdoor toolset has made outdoor areas look much more natural, interiors have recieved few additions. In making my own module it is very frustrating to see all the limitations. No twisting corridors, pits or levels. -No ragdoll physics. Oh come on! How cool would it be to knock orcs down hills?? -Player faces could use an overhaul. They aren't as bad as many people make them out to be, but they aren't all that great either and not many choices. Gee I can choose 1 of 4 different male human heads, all of which look like crap! Pros -The story and characters are a huge improvement over the first game. -While modules take much longer to complete, they are much better looking and advanced. -Obsidian showing that they care about the community as much, if not more by their continued support for the game. Only a few months out and the game has recieved multiple patches, many with some major updates that really improve the game/custom content creation. This alone makes most of my cons pale a bit as time goes on. -Great character creation. While the ability to choose more faces/sculpt your own could be improved, there are many many ways to customize your character. More than a sentence, I know. While I thought of more cons than pros, I think this is an overall good game. I'd give it a 6-7 out of 10. The good news is the patches that keep coming out are improving this game little by little as they come. It is deffiniyly worth atleast one play through IMHO.

Big Whoop. My feelings about this news or one of the best quests in Adventure Game history? You decide. "

Another cliche I hate: The young wise cracking kid who saves the day. Example: Jurassic Park, The Mummy II and Robocop 3. These characters are obviously aimed at the younger crowd. "OMG the huge dinosaur/monster/robot is coming! Oh wait! Little billy hacked/kung fu'd/talked us out of the situation! Wow billy, I have a new found respect for you even though you are only 9 and don't know how to tie your own shoes!"

'Most' parents react quickly when their child is in danger. This stupid car explosion/amnesia scene is so far beyond 'what would you do if you saw your daughter slide down a not-so-steep hill and the car blows up' dilemma. I have no idea how she could have NOT seen Kim jump/fall out of the car, let alone forget to put the parking break on, faint without even bother checking the wreckage/SIMPLY LOOK DOWN THE HILL WHICH SHE HAD A PERFECT VANTAGE POINT OF etc. etc. This is such a ridiculous argument when talking about this specific event. It is a hypothetical, what if the laws of physics and reality ceased for a moment event. Mother being chased by assassin fools assassin by driving down road, parking on an incline, doesn't bother to leave hand break on and for some reason decides to WALK up to the main road to see if he drove by (incredibly, insanely stupid idea) then sees car roll down hill and explode for no reason with the daughter some how falling/jumping out and banging her head just hard enough to knock her out, but not cause any permanent damage conveniently long enough so her mother passes out at the sight of an explosion, giving her amnesia and on and on. Yeah, I suppose it isn't all that cheesy to faint after seeing the car roll down a hill and magicly explode after she forgot to put the parking break on and decided to go have a peak when it would have been 100% more safe to just stay in the car.

BREAKING NEWS! First Duke Nukem Forever screenshot
GreasyDogMeat replied to Meshugger's topic in Computer and Console
Looks like a picture of a cutscene from one of the console versions of Duke Nukem. I'll believe it when we get some more shots and more official announcements. This just looks... fake. I'll be completly :joy: when Duke 4ever finally gets an official date... if ever. -
I used the word 'think' once, and I know if I were in a situation where a family member were in danger I'd try to help them. The panic, horror, fainting part comes when you realize you CAN'T help. That was just one more problem with the stupid scene. Besides the stupidity of the car blowing up down the hill, she doesn't even bother to go down the hilliside to check and see if maybe the daughter A. managed to leap out or B. needs help in the car. Either way if you want to question the cheesiness of one particular 'questionable' cheesy part in a string of cheesy events leading to amnesia, be my guest. Even if I were to be convinced that not checking to see if your daughter is injured first before passing out isn't an added cheesiness to a magic exploding car. it isn't going to make the scene any better.
