  1. The women I seved with in the Marines were always complaining they could do any job a man could do. It told one I'd believe it they day one of them actually finished a run. Never happened.
  2. If they are screwing you to the wall does it matter if it for profit or some mad vision of how the world should be? But I do get your point.
  3. I was referring to politicians who favor big government. After all, controlling the internet is only appealing to the people who would be in control of it. There is a great quote from an old computer game of all places. "Beware of he who would deny you access to information, for in his heart he dreams himself your master".
  4. Now reading True Spirit by Jessica Watson about her solo circumnavigation two years back. Also rereading The Great Hunt by Robert Jordan.
  5. Happy belated Birthday Raithe. I miss football... there is nothing to watch on TV but basketball and I try to like it but I just don't. Only three games left in the NFL season then it's a long two month wait until baseball starts.
  6. Not to go OT so soon but did you ever get your book published? You were thinking about self publishing IIRC.
  7. While internet piracy is a big problem the SOPA & PIPA bills are just awful. They would give the US Government the power to order providers to block sites deemed to have "stolen" content and preclude businesses from advertising on sites deemed to have "stolen" content. And who gets the final say on what sites get blocked? The US Government. This is a raw and naked power grab. They will have the power to block any site they choose based only on a poorly defined criteria that they can apply at their caprice. Think of the potential ramifications for political speech online. This bill could and probably will be horribly abused down the line. Like I said, internet piracy is a problem but this cures the headache by cutting off the head...potentially. I sent e-mails to the roaches in my congressional delegation last week. So far the House Rep opposes and the Senators have yet to take a position. I'll send another one to each next week and again before the vote. If there is one. I read tonight the bill's sponsers are pulling their support. Hurlie might be right and this thing will die on the vine. More likely they will want to bury it until the press dies down and try to quietly pass it later. The MPA is a powerful and wealthy lobby, lots of money in supporting this crap. Plus I think the idea of taking control of the internet in some measure appeals to the "big-government" types.
  8. Now reading "The Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy" all five books in one collection. I don't know how I've avoided reading this on yet but it is a lot of fun.
  9. Very cool sounding trip Hurlie. I've always wanted to get up that way, it's the one part of the country I haven't seen yet. I've spent the last few days sanding and sand blasting the body of the plymoth. Plus I ordered a new top and convertable motor. You can really see the progress now. I'm modifying the front for bucket seats and have decided not to install a back seat at all. Saves a few bucks, cuts the weight a little and opens up room for other things. Not sure what yet.
  10. Wow, it's been an interesting discussion but you guys have really run out of steam. Of course, I'll admit once mister "Anyone-who-disagrees-with-me-is-not-a-person" dropped out it did lose it's troll/comedy appeal.
  11. I took the College Prof out to dinner tonight. I can definitely tell that is cooling off. Just as well I guess, she didn't seem to like the dogs anyway. Dating in your 20's is fun and exciting. In your 40's it just sucks. I don't have the money to attract the young ones (plus being burned out and cynical does not help) and the older ones are all as screwed up as I am. Dysfunction is attracted to dysfunction that is true, but it rarely makes for a healthy relationship! Now I'm going to pour myself a double highball of fine Kentucky bourbon with ice and a splash of ginger ale and sit on my porch and count the stars.
  12. It ain't the age Lady... it's the milage. I think my odomoter has already turned over.
  13. Just enough time for a re-read I had that same thought. It's been years since I've looked at any of them other than the last one. I called Eye of the World on my Kindle last night and set out from Emonds Field once again... for the last time.

    Music

Jamming some old school rock tonight. Blue Oyster Cult Dancin in the Ruins is up now. The Grateful Dead Scarlet Begonias came before.
  15. 2012 has started out busier than hell. Almost 100 new laws/zoning requirments took effect on 1/1/2012. A lot flaming hoops to leap through. There is just something wrong with the whole concept of a professional legislator.
  16. This just in: Brandon Sanderson Has Finished The Final WoT Book "A Memory of Light" Once revisions are completed we can finally see how it all ends after almost 20 years. It should come out in 3Q this year.
  17. We have an update to this story. As you all know, Mr. Vader has fallen on tough times, what with being laid off after the fall of the empire and all. When we last checked he had resorted to petty robbery to support his galactic conquest habit. Now he has hit rock bottom: http://www.clickorlando.com/news/Man-weari...1z/-/index.html After wandering the streets and getting into a drunken brawl with a FHP trooper Mr. Vader was tased and probably "fell down'" a few times as he was being arrested and then taken to a hospital. So ends the sad tale of an unemployed Sith Lord who only wanted to make a better life for himself by corrupting his children and repressing all the people of the galaxy.
  18. Went to see Montreal at Ottawa last night. Lots of Habs fans in attendance, mostly drowned out the Sens fans. The only thing both sides put aside their differences to cheer together for was when the out of town scores came up showing Toronto losing to Florida. Also, finally a Habs win! Anderson was playing terrible though. 4 goals on 7 shots. Speaking of the out of town fans...Leafs fans are crazy. The "go leafs go" chant was so loud in Florida I can't imagine what it's like in Toronto. When I lived down there I had season tickets, at the Miami Arena in '96-'97 and in the new arena in Sunrise for a few years. From Nov-Feb the Rangers, Habs, & Leafs had a home ice advantage there because of all the snow birds. What did you think of the arena by the way. I've always thought it was the nicest one I've been in.
  19. Happy New Year all! It's gonna be a great year! The Marlins will win the Series, the world economy will stabilize, I'll finally get my book published, Cuba & China & North Korea will abandon Communism, we will vote Barack Obama out of office, Game of Thrones & Southland have new seasons starting, Brandon Sanderson will finish the last WoT book, Hugo Chavez will do the world a solid and die, we'll have peace in the middle east, The Green Berets (not to be outdone by the SEALs) will track down Zawahiri and put a bullet in his head, The Hobbit Movie comes out, and last but not least the Florida Panthers will win the Stanley Cup. If even half of that happens it will be a good year!
  20. Merry Christmas everyone. I've been out playing with the dogs and their new toys, frisbees, balls, and Booda Bone rope toys. I've got the smoker going now making jerky dog treats, and for myself I've got a fresh venison back strap that I'll cut for steaks along with steamed stone crab claws and steamed yellow squash topped off with fresh biscuits I'm making from scratch. For now though I'm going to open an ice cold Sam Adams winter lager and give Dragon Age a look for the first time ever. It's not a perfect Christmas Day, but it sure ain't bad either.
  21. Merry Christmas Eve folks. I was going to go fishing today but the weather had other ideas. So, I've got a venison stew slow cooking in the crock pot and some ice cold Sam Adams Winter Lager in the fridge. The NFL kicks off in two hours, life is good!
  22. You know, it occured to me last night, as I enjoyed a glass of good bourbon while sitting on my porch and watching the rain fall, that both atheists and religious people are operating from a great deal of faith. The atheist asserts there is no god because his existence cannot be proven. People of faith believe in Him because His existence cannot be disproven. Both are accepting their position based solely on faith, not fact. Ironic isn't it? I guess the only people who have a logical viewpoint are the agnostics. But before you agnostic folks start high fiveing in celebration remember this: not taking a position at all makes you wishy washy! By the way, Merry Christmas Krezzie, I hope you get lots of enviormentally unfriendly gifts so you can spend the whole day stewing in your own bitter venom. I'll turn on a few extra lights tonight and leave them on... just for you.
  23. Never mind, you guys already know about it. One of the mods can delete this thread.
  24. http://www.hlntv.com/article/2011/12/21/ra...d-nerds-rejoice Looks pretty sharp. If the world does not blow up next year it goes on my "must see "list.
  25. For those who are seeking a "non-traditional" religion you might give this a try: http://geekout.blogs.cnn.com/2011/12/20/st...czech-republic/ Hey, if it makes them happy, more power (er.. force) to them.
