  1. I must admit reading Bernard Cornwell books have given me a real appreciation of post Roman Britannia and Dennmark
  2. Sorry to derail a good bit of ill-informed America bashing but I'll be directing the flow of conversation back to the more mundane bits of everyday life. I finally got the house cleaned up and back in order. Since January I've only been here for six weeks this year. I am beat. I am happy to hear about the break up of La Nina. That will probably mean less rain and a lower chance of flooding. Baseball season is back and the Rays are playing great. Speaking of which I got to go to a few LMB games while working in Nuevo Laredo last month. Those folks are nuts about the game. I just lit the grill and I've got cuts of venison shish-ka-bob with peppers, onion, squash and red potato cuts along with a fine bourbon on ice. The dogs are happy to be home, I'm happy to be home, life is good!
  3. I've got to try that!
  4. BTW Krook, your Devils broke my heart. I didn't get to see any of the games, bet I heard some of how it went.
  5. I was sort of fond of a period, just a few years ago when Krezzie wasn't such an angry and bitter dude! My favorite I guess was the Age of Exploration that began with Columbus. But I'd bet Juan Sebastian El Cano would be ticked to know his greatest accomplishment is universally attributed to a man who could not keep his nose of of things that did ot concern him.
  6. Nope that contract is finished. Nobody even tried to kidnap me. I guess word got around I had no money. I'm back home for a while.
  7. I watched the first four episodes on the plane ride home yesterday. They have wandered a little from the books but it is working really well. That guy playing Joffrey is not getting enough credit. It tales real talent to be so unlikable and pull it off so well.
  8. I just orderd 27 books for my Kindle. I'll be busy for a while.
  9. Ah he's done. Don't wast any more of your angst on him. You know, I really am surprised you non US folks follow US politics so closely. I watch the politcal battles in other countries too, Canada, Mexico, and the UK in particular but I don't maintain near the degree of interest you guys do in ours. I just find that very curious, if you don't get a vote why do you care? I mean seriously this folks on this forum were 99% in the tank for Obama and after four years aside from the fact he has run up a staggaring amount of debt the US is really not that different. Foreign policy has changed very little from Bush, we have gotten involved in yet another war and appear to be prepping for a fourth since he's come into office. He's had very little effect on the world and US economy which are both actually worse for everyone since he came into office (not that it's his fault, it was happening anyway). The only real social change in the US since he's been in office was allowing gays to serve openly in the military which was inevitable anyway because the "gay stigma" is vanishing from the US culture. And that was also inevitable. I'll tell you a little secret, if Romney wins in November the US will only be slightly different in 2016. A little further right or a little further left but only by the smallest of degrees. A little better off or a little worse off who knows. So I'm genuinely curious, why do you non-US guys care so much about it?
  10. I took the dogs back to Jackson yesterday. The house is so quiet without them. It feels wrong. I'm packing up today and heading back south of the border on Sunday. I'll see you guys when I get home next month.
  11. My DVR is primed and ready!
  12. Vaya con Dios todos amigos! Voy a Hermasillo en el Domingo. It's been fun but I've got to back to work. You guys be good until I get back!
  13. That is a mess. I once walked out of a class when I got a bad vibe from the professor. It was the last day to drop the class and still get a refund so I couldn't waste time with him.
  14. Now reading "Hockey Night in Dixie" about life in the ECHL & CHL minor hockey leagues in the southern US. Great book!
  15. By the way, Pravda ran an article on Mitt Romney that is worth a chuckle: http://www.weeklystandard.com/blogs/pravda-mitt-romney-out-touch-out-date-unelectable_634772.html Wow Pravda, why don't you tell us how you REALLY feel?
  16. Gentlemen, I am pleased to report the Austrian invasion plans are proceeding on schedule! Soon the red white and blue will fly over Vienna and we'll tear down all those old Baroque buildings, bulldoze the opera, put a McDonalds on every street corner and a Wal-Mart where the Belvedere now stands! I know the international community might not like it but we don't give a damn what they think muh hah ha! I got dibs on Morgoth's computer and game collection!
  17. The Martin kids death plays into a political narrative. Or at least is being crammed into one by people who make their living doing that very thing. I guess that's why. That story you posted is very FUed.
  18. Isn't that exactly the problem? Some vigilante stalks a guy, pursues him despite police telling him to back off and then shoots a man when he has him cornered, claiming self defence. Police couldn't even be bothered to investigate as the killer claimed "self defence", effectively turning a stupid law into a free for all "license to kill", as long as you say the magic words "i felt threatened". Maybe it is good that it gets a bit of attention and especially the police conduct gets scrutinized a bit. This whole thing stinks to high heaven if you ask me. 1) The police told Zimmerman not to pursue the kid. 2) The kid ends up with two bullets in his chest and nothing by skittles and iced tea in his hand Those are two good reasons why he should have been arrested. If there is a good reason why he should not then I haven't heard it. But there is the rub and Calax is right here, we do not know all the facts. Maybe it is justified, but if there is a compelling detail that makes it so they had best make it public soon. Sooner or later someone is going to kill that guy. I am a supporter of the Stand Your Ground law but the threat has to be reasonable and I'm just not seeing it here. But again like Calax said we do not know everything.
  19. Anyone want a like new copy of The Song of Achillies? It stinks. Now reading National Geographic Magazine March 2012 issue. This is the only subscription I've never cancelled.
  20. This thread is over, Nonek wins!
  21. If risking your own life to save someone elses does not make you a hero I'm not sure what would. It is the definition of a selfless act. Even the bible agrees: John 15:13 Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends. How much more so than to risk his life for strangers or their children? Uh-oh I quoted the Bible on this forum. Methinks there will be flames!
  22. Yeah that about sums it up. There is a reason I don't drink to the point of inebriation, usually. Somewhere in my early 30's hangovers went from being a mild inconvienience to a seriously debilitating condition.
  23. Ah don't mind Morgoth, he's always grumpy. You want to see negative just wait until Krezack shows up. But seriously, this guy is a hero. Big time. Maybe there is some hope for the humans after all.
  24. Very hung over today. My brother was passing through and spent the night on Tuesday, then ended up staying until this morning. Last night we drank a whole bottle of Knob Creek between us then broke into a case of Guniess I had that wasn't even cold. Doing that I violated on of the cardinal rules of booze, never chase liquor with beer. It's ok to do it the other way around but once you start on the had stuff, stick with it.
