Does anyone else share my dislike of d20?
Archmonarch replied to Jediphile's topic in Pen-and-Paper Gaming
The Warlock and fanmade variants are pretty much my favorite class. -
I tend to use this Intertran translator for my writing. However, I usually go word by word or phrase by phrase. Even then it isnt perfect. But its pretty good for machine translation. By hand translation costs too much. In addition, if you move your cursor over a word in the translation, it will show you alternatives from which you can choose. Two words of warning: It sometimes takes multiples tries to get through to the server. Many people are using it. Also, Ive never used it to translate websites.

Notice the word medium. This implies compromise. While I understand your pov, others desire different things. I was just suggesting a midpoint between the two. -

I did it the old fashioned way, with lots of grenades and some luck. -

Sort of a medium between the two sides is a normal character who becomes a Jedi/Sith at some point early in the game. I think that would be doable plotwise as only a few non-essential quests and a few other things might change between the initial classes. There really arent that many base classes anyway: Fringer, Noble, Scoundrel, Scout, Soldier, Tech Specialist, and Force Adept, leaving out the Jedi of course. This would allow us to try various styles of play before taking up the restricted mantle of Jedi/Sith. Even those who wanted to start as a force user could choose the Force Adept. Another interesting thought is perhaps using some of the class variants throughout the SW PnP books, combinations of 2 classes to form one with some strengths of both, though never as accomplished as the specialist. I doubt this would happen, but the possibilities for combination are practically endless. Perhaps an algorithm could form a hybrid of classes using a preprogrammed variant as a base, or following certain rules found within the PnP system. The main plot would remain constant throughout the different variables, only the trappings would differ. Maybe a few puzzles or such later in the game would depend upon a skill you had from your initial class, an option for each one. It would require some more work, but might produce more replayability and a better game in the end. After all, I know, after having tried to replay a number of games in the past few months, that in many cases I did not want to replay the beginnings. To use the KoToRs as examples, I didnt want to play Taris (particularly the Undercity and Sewers) or the Damaged Ebon Hawk/Peragus Station again. Not that I didnt enjoy them the first time, but I began to find them tedious and wanted to speed into the exciting bits. If the beginnings could differ enough to provide a different intro, it might cause players to continue through different arrangements without losing interest. -

Im one of those poor wretches who have never been released beyond WOTC's control. I would certainly like to however, and thus suggest someone should start an internet (whether by chat, etc.) PnP game with the system of their choice and have members from these boards play. Given the various ranges of characters we have here, I think the sessions would be rather interesting. Also, it could settle this debate by introducing people to various different systems and arriving upon a consensus as to which is best. -

Agreed, leave the remainder of Star Wars existence to a later RPG series. (Hint, hint.) -

Im gonna have to go with alternate universe Charybdis, which sucks all the goodness to it. Charybdis was the whirlpool monster in Greek Myth.

It was the opposite extreme, IMO, for Advent Rising. Most reviewers (there will be no names) played a few hours, decided they didnt like the control scheme before it really had a chance to be used (basically before the story was revealed and before you received any powers), and declared it a POS. It certainly wasnt the best game ever, but it deserved more than 5.6. The fact that Majesco f'ed up on the contest didnt help matters.

So, in other words, Ill tell them I think there will be a K3 without confirming anything or releasing any pertinent details that might be disproved. Good job.

NOTE: This will be my final attempt to revive this thread. If you do not desire to read more of my writing, say nothing. If you, however, do have an interest, please post. I will continue writing offline regardless, but I could use the critiques. And encouragement is always nice. So, again due to facets outside my direct control, I have had little time to throw at my writing projects. I have written several paragraphs of the passage I am currently working on, though. It follows directly after the opening post. Please indicate any problems you may see and what you liked. Chapter 1 Cont. A basic principle of nature exists, such that one must endure risk in order to gain. This precept may be equally applied to humanity. A great well of untapped potential lies within us all, straining to burst free and release the waters of inspiration. However, due to societal constraints, many deny these gifts, believing only a chosen few are meant for greatness. In truth, everyone holds the seeds of significance within them, if only they freed themselves from false limitations. Those who do so are recorded in time. Destiny is not born; it is forged. Tempting Oblivion was one path to unlock this latent power, depending upon the aforementioned tenet. Certainly other methods existed, yet they were unknown to him. And, as his father said, we work with what we are given. The basis of this method grew from observation of the stars and the Great Darkness that held them. Apparently, some way back along his family line, someone had conceived the notion that the lights in the night sky were lures, similar to those employed to catch fish or other game. And lures possess only a single purpose: to draw out that which is desired. Thus it was decided the stars must be baiting the emptiness in which they swam. Yet for what reason? For consumption? No, the stars could no more digest the night than fish the ocean. Moreover, did stars eat at all? This ancestor pondered upon the situation and finally came upon an answer that appeared to satisfy the available evidence. One pursuit had little affect on life, though it could seem so, and yet men desired it endlessly. Surely the celestial beings were not so different. Power. The stars must be seeking strength held by their dim counterpart. (Yes, I know the second paragraph is somewhat awkward. Its only the earliest version and Im working on it.)

Well, its not exactly a AAA title with huge amounts of monetary backing, either.

The Monkeysphere (which I have blatantly stolen from one of Meta's earlier posts) seems to apply to this discussion.

The Guyver is a fairly old manga/anime adapted into a couple live action American movies in the 80's and early 90's. I seem to recall there will soon be an anime remake. The basic premise is that the Chronos corporation controls 3 guyver units, alien devices that when placed over the face fuse with the wearer's biophysical form and can be called out at will in the form of the armor in the last post, though with slight differences from unit to unit. One is lost and found by a highschool kid (in manga/anime) or a regular guy (in movies) which then becomes "The Guyver." And so the Zoanoids (Chronos' partially human/part animal soldiers/employees) attempt to kill him and retrieve the lost unit.

Ah. :"> On my monitor, they appear almost identical at first glance. You are correct. In that case, both Burgundy and West Roman Empire have advantages, though less than I previously assumed. -

Eh? What? Come again? Six? <{POST_SNAPBACK}> Count them. Fleets in Ams and Ven. Armies in Bru, Dij, Tur, and Rom. 2+4=6 As for the 8 instead of 18, I misremembered the winning conditions. My mistake. Still, Burgundy would have a monstrous advantage. -

Yeah, he was trying to persuade me to use a similar move during the last turn. I forget to correct him, though I knew it was wrong. -

I noticed the same flaw as Meta. There is absolutely no reason for anyone to desire to play the Celts. At the very least, I would switch the A in Edi with the F in Bre. Otherwise, the Celts have no room to expand at all (unless they do F Bre-Aqu, yet that would probably fail as Burgundy would also move to Aquitane and if it succeeded would leave Brest open for further assault) and no way to protect their inland continental territories. Also, giving Burgundy SIX forces as opposed to everyone else's THREE? Bad planning, in my opinion. Not only would Burgundy easily conquer the interior as you have placed them near so many open supply centers, but also dominate militarily. No one would be able to compete with such a disparate arrangement of power at the opening, especially if you maintained the rule whereby only 8 supply centers are required to win. That would occur in Spring of the First Year through some combination of A Dij-Aqu, A Tur-Swi, and F Ven-Ist. Finally, I would reconsider whether some Armies should become Fleets, Fleets become Armies, etc. -
