  1. White, to be frank, I agree. The writing is so immature that I am almost entirely convinced they have a team of professional writers to translate JK Rowling's scribbles into legible, understandable English. I read it simply to gain insight into why it is is popular, so that I may apply similar (though more advanced) principles to my own literary endeavors. So far, I fail to see anything remarkable about this series.
  2. My guess, based on recurrent themes in HP books: someone is pretending to be Snape whether through mundane disguise or magic so as to once again cast blame upon him, thus ridding the good guys of their main source of information on the bad guys.
  3. A reminder to my fellow nations: Negotiation requires two-way communication.
  4. I was, and am, a great fan of The Outer Limits. Basically a series of what-if? scifi propositions. Just yesterday, I was watching one titled 'The Music of the Spheres' on the SCIFI channel in which Kirsten Dunst and that Pacey guy from Dawson's Creek starred. Synopsis (partially from TV.com): Devon Taylor (Pacey), a 20 year-old physics TA, has heard a lot of strange sounds coming from space as part of his job assisting Dr. Evan Swift in investigation of the recent growth of solar flare activity -but something tells him this signal, coming from the direction of Certus, is special. Devon's suspicions are confirmed when he takes a tape of the signal home and his 17 year-old sister, Joyce (Kirsten Dunst), and her boyfriend Vic react as if they have heard the most beautiful music in the world. But the sound, which seems comprehensible only to teenagers, has a disturbing side-effect; Joyce and Vic's skin begins physically changing, as does the skin of all the other teenagers they expose to the sound. Worse, when Devon's father, Dr. Emory Taylor, orders the "music" taken away, the teenagers appear to go through a painful and possibly deadly withdrawal. Faced with the spread of this potentially deadly audio virus, the government imposes martial law as Devon and his father try to figure out why the sound has the effect it does. To make a long story short, they eventually realize the sun is shifting into a blue dwarf, and that the music was sent to allow humanity to survive the increase in ultraviolet radiation. Basically, their skin turns an iridescent gold formed of heavy metals to block the UV rays.
  5. Though I do not, my father has been accused of being Richard Dreyfuss by Canadians. I must say the resemblance is fairly striking.
  6. I am not messaging you right now.
  7. Rabbits, not Goldfish. Silly Meta. And I originally had the same interpretation as you: that somehow rabbits were being launched from a motorboat. However, I later reconsidered and decided it meant you cant hunt rabbits from a motorboat, which while strange is less idiotic.
  8. Ok, here's the concept. Create a mythological creature of some sort or another. Nothing consciously offensive allowed. Inspiration from any culture or completely original ideas acceptable. Entries may occasionaly be cross-classified. Categories: Hybrids: Combinations of more than one creature, whether two animals (imaginary or real) or human and animal. Ex: Griffin, Centaur, Satyr, Hippocampus, Dracogriff, Manticore, etc. Beasts: Monstrous Animals. Ex: Fenrir, Godzilla, etc. Flora: Monstrous Plants. Ex: Mandragora Spirits: Ghosts, Phantasms, Spectres, etc. Anthrocryptids: Any creature vaguely resembling Human form. Anthrocrytid Subcategories: Ferals: Bigfoot, Skunk Ape, Yeti, etc. Any humanoid creatures who actively avoid civilization for various reasons. Undead: Vampires, Zombies, etc. Strangers: Faeries, Aliens, Angels, Demons, etc. Basically creatures who could coexist with humanity through camouflage (pretending to be human), but never seem to quite fit in whether due to behavior or slightly odd appearance. Shapeshifters: Were-anything Mystics: Wizards, Mages, Witches, Nahuali, Shamans, Psychics etc. Suggestions for further categories welcome.
  9. Unfortunately, TvTome is no more. CNET (owner of Gamespot and GameFAQS) purchased it and changed it to TV.com, along with a total rewriting of the site.
  10. That is possibly the dumbest law ever, excepting these 25 (in no particular order): 1. Los Angeles - Zoot suits are prohibited. 2. Chico, California - Detonating a nuclear device within city limits shall result in a $500 fine. (One of my personal favorites.) 3. New Mexico - Idiots may not vote. <-- I actually rather agree with this one, but it would probably disqualify too many people. 4. Indian Wells, California - Drinking intoxicating cement is prohibited. 5. Kansas - If two trains meet on the same track, neither shall proceed until the other has passed. 6. Alaska - It is considered an offense to push a live moose out of a moving airplane. 7. San Francisco - Persons classified as "ugly" may not walk down any street. 8. Daytona Beach, Florida - The molestation of trash cans is banned. 9. New York - The penalty for jumping off a building is death. (Another of my favorites.) 10. Chicago - Law forbids eating in a building currently on fire. 11. Texas - A recently passed anticrime law requires criminals to give their victims 24 hours notice, either orally or in writing, and to explain the nature of the crime to be committed. 12. Lenior County, Tennessee - When you pull up to a stop sign, you must fire a gun out the window to warn horse carriages that you are coming. 13. York, United Kingdom - Excluding Sundays, it is perfectly legal to shoot a Scotsman with a bow and arrow. 14. Marshalltown, Iowa - Horses shall not eat fire hydrants. 15. Texarkana, Texas - Owners of horses may not ride them at night without tail lights. 16. Athens-Clarke County, Georgia - Goldfish may not be given away to entice someone to enter a game of bingo. 17. Liverpool - It is illegal for a woman to be topless in public except as a clerk in a tropical fish store. 18. Whitehall, Montana - It is illegal to operate a vehicle with ice picks attached to the wheels. 19. Louisiana - Biting someone with your natural teeth is "simple assault," while biting someone with your false teeth is "aggravated assault." 20. Kansas - Rabbits may not be shot from motorboats. 21. Texas - The department shall develop and administer a program awarding matching grants to political subdivisions of this state for weather modification and control.
  11. Student/Aspiring Writer
  12. It would have been better with the subtitle: The Lilith Chronicles :D
  13. Now that's just wrong. Honestly, who would kill a faerie?
  14. By the right of self-determination, I declare taks and myself to have the best goth names.
  15. Did you take the idea of action points from Eberron? Or are they intrinsic to D20 Modern and were ported to the former world?
  16. You had never heard of these before?
  17. I preferred your old avatar.
  18. Im a resolver, though Im not sure it fits. Also, I located this How Likely Are You To Be A Millionaire? quiz on the same site. My score is 24, one away from the highest possible rating.
  19. Synthetic Darkness Hmm...you know, that's not bad.
  20. I knew both, entirely due to advertisements on television.
  21. Schweinehund, not "schweinhund". Scheissenbedauern isn't a word. "Bedauern", yes, but both attached do not make any sense. Just taking "Sh!t regret" and then transfer that 1:1 to German doesn't work (always). <{POST_SNAPBACK}> First, unlike you, I am not a native German speaker so excuse the slight spelling error. Also as for scheissenbedauern, I had this to say: One Ive heard, but havent been able to verify as a real word, rather than a made up approximation.
  22. Refer to first post.
  23. schweinhund - pigdog The only German I ever learned from my father. He uses it to refer to Nazis. I also happen to know these: Weltanschauung - a comprehensive philosophy of the world or of human life; "world-view" Weltschmerz - sadness over the evils of the world, especially as an expression of romantic pessimism Zeitgeist - the taste and outlook characteristic of a period or generation; literally "the spirit of the time". Zugzwang - A situation in every possible action results in a disadvantage (from chess). One Ive heard, but havent been able to verify as a real word, rather than a made up approximation: Scheissenbedauern - The disappointment one feels when exposed to something that is not nearly as bad as one hoped it would be; literally "s*** regret".
  24. According to American English, (I believe) they are interchangeable. But I would probably say the smell of the air, as well.
