Amentep Posted May 15, 2018 Posted May 15, 2018 Not to be confused with any Italian dramatic films with entirely coincidentally similar names. 8 I cannot - yet I must. How do you calculate that? At what point on the graph do "must" and "cannot" meet? Yet I must - but I cannot! ~ Ro-Man
LadyCrimson Posted May 15, 2018 Posted May 15, 2018 I have not seen it but reading reviews, sounds like the new Han Solo movie will be typical lightly enjoyable entertainment. It's always weird to see someone else's face associated with such an iconic character tho. Doesn't matter how good the replacement is at nailing the role, it's still weird. I also watched The Clapper via Amazon or Netflix, I forget which. I found it to be an odd movie in the sense that the main character is kind of unlikable, but the film as a whole has this low-key-charm so I kept watching. Plus the cameos of famous to meme-famous (the Shamwow guy made me lol) people was fitfully amusing. But by 3/4 of the way through I'd sort of had it with the main character and began to tune out. “Things are as they are. Hurlshort Posted May 16, 2018 Posted May 16, 2018 I watched The Clapper as well. Tracey Morgan was really the main reason I finished it.
Blarghagh Posted May 16, 2018 Posted May 16, 2018 Saw The Greatest Showman. Shallow but watchable because it has a feeling of positivity. I liked it mostly, but all the songs sound like they were written and mixed by Owl City (google told me they weren't) so your enjoyment will vary based on that most likely.
Fiach Posted May 16, 2018 Posted May 16, 2018 (edited) Went to Deadpool 2 last night. Very funny, lots of laugh out loud moments, especially with his irreverent finger pointing at other movies, especially X Men. Oh, yeah watch till halfway through the credits! algroth Posted May 16, 2018 Posted May 16, 2018 (edited) Queen biopic trailer. Much like Queen's music, this looks like a lot of style over substance, but unlike Queen's music, it doesn't look like particularly fun style over substance. Agiel Posted May 17, 2018 Posted May 17, 2018 Rumours seem to indicate that the new Obi-Wan Star Wars movie is going to be a bit of a re-telling of the Seven Samurai. Quote “Political philosophers have often pointed out that in wartime, the citizen, the male citizen at least, loses one of his most basic rights, his right to life; and this has been true ever since the French Revolution and the invention of conscription, now an almost universally accepted principle. But these same philosophers have rarely noted that the citizen in question simultaneously loses another right, one just as basic and perhaps even more vital for his conception of himself as a civilized human being: the right not to kill.” -Jonathan Littell <<Les Bienveillantes>> Quote "The chancellor, the late chancellor, was only partly correct. He was obsolete. But so is the State, the entity he worshipped. Any state, entity, or ideology becomes obsolete when it stockpiles the wrong weapons: when it captures territories, but not minds; when it enslaves millions, but convinces nobody. When it is naked, yet puts on armor and calls it faith, while in the Eyes of God it has no faith at all. Any state, any entity, any ideology that fails to recognize the worth, the dignity, the rights of Man...that state is obsolete." -Rod Serling
Fiach Posted May 17, 2018 Posted May 17, 2018 Went to The Quiet Place. Started off great, then took a big dunk in the stupid bucket. There's s not enough water in The Dead Sea to suspend the disbelief in this. There are so many stupid plot holes that's I'd have to spoil the whole movie to mention them. The deaf girl is really good. That's all I can say that's positive about the film. Thanks for shopping Pawn-O-Matic!
injurai Posted May 18, 2018 Posted May 18, 2018 Rumours seem to indicate that the new Obi-Wan Star Wars movie is going to be a bit of a re-telling of the Seven Samurai. Given that Star Wars drew so much from Hidden Fortress, this sounds like a pretty good starting point for an Kenobi film. 2
Hurlshort Posted May 18, 2018 Posted May 18, 2018 Wow. Hard to imagine they have anything left after that trailer. Rotten cotton.
Amentep Posted May 18, 2018 Author Posted May 18, 2018 I'll confess, the trailer really dropped my interest in it. I cannot - yet I must. How do you calculate that? At what point on the graph do "must" and "cannot" meet? Yet I must - but I cannot! ~ Ro-Man
Hurlshort Posted May 18, 2018 Posted May 18, 2018 Deadpool 2 was great. Definitely managed to hit the bar the original set. Full Winnie the Pooh.
Raithe Posted May 19, 2018 Posted May 19, 2018 Heh, it was some seriously cheesy, joyful fun. Dang, now I want to dig out the dvd and re-watch it... AVClub - The Phantom paid tongue in cheek homage to old timey do-gooders but never got its due 1 "Cuius testiculos habeas, habeas cardia et cerebellum."
LadyCrimson Posted May 21, 2018 Posted May 21, 2018 That 2nd Jack Reacher movie was "free" on Amazon Prime so we watched that while eating pizza. The first film was a lot better, imo. This sequel was ok, but I didn't like the "maybe daughter" subplot which just felt like boring time-filler. You could have excised that entire subplot/character from the film and never notice anything missing. “Things are as they are. Amentep Posted May 21, 2018 Author Posted May 21, 2018 I still have a pewter(?) Phantom Ring from the Phantom movie promotional circuit somewhere...SLAM EVIL! I cannot - yet I must. Blarghagh Posted May 22, 2018 Posted May 22, 2018 Winchester. Terrible. Even as someone who thinks gun culture in America is out of control I still don't want my haunted house movies to be heavy handed rants on gun control.
Pidesco Posted May 23, 2018 Posted May 23, 2018 Deadpool 2 is awesome, although not quite as awesome as the first. Better plotting would have been nice. "My hovercraft is full of eels!" - Hungarian tourist I am Dan Quayle of the Romans. I want to tattoo a map of the Netherlands on my nether lands. Heja Sverige!! Everyone should cuffawkle more. The wrench is your friend.
Chilloutman Posted May 23, 2018 Posted May 23, 2018 Deadpool 2 sux, little more than first one I'm the enemy, 'cause I like to think, I like to read. I'm into freedom of speech, and freedom of choice. I'm the kinda guy that likes to sit in a greasy spoon and wonder, "Gee, should I have the T-bone steak or the jumbo rack of barbecue ribs with the side-order of gravy fries?" I want high cholesterol! I wanna eat bacon, and butter, and buckets of cheese, okay?! I wanna smoke a Cuban cigar the size of Cincinnati in the non-smoking section! I wanna run naked through the street, with green Jell-O all over my body, reading Playboy magazine. Why? Because I suddenly may feel the need to, okay, pal? I've SEEN the future. Do you know what it is? It's a 47-year-old virgin sitting around in his beige pajamas, drinking a banana-broccoli shake, singing "I'm an Oscar Meyer Wiene"
majestic Posted May 23, 2018 Posted May 23, 2018 Just came back from Solo. I... uhm... let's for a moment disregard that Solo was eve more fan-fictiony than Rogue One was, if someone told me half a year ago that I'd walk out of Solo less disappointed than The Last Jedi I would have asked if they could pass the magic mushrooms. That's not to say that the movie was good. I almost fell asleep after having a rough last night. Being tired sure played into it but the film - for me - was entirely devoid of tension and felt like nothing at all was at stake. That might not be the fault of the movie alone, it's a prequel that deals with Han Solo. So yeah, of course we get to see the Kessel Run done in 12 parsecs, Han meeting Chewie and getting the Falcon. And no matter what happens on the screen we of course know that the Falcon is coming out in one piece and that both Han and Chewie make it through the film. The stakes are real. And there's one very weird scene at the end where Darth Maul shows up and orders Daenerys Qi'ra to Dathomir. I presume that this is a tie-in to the Kenobi prequel since in Rebels it is Kenobi that deals with Darth Maul in Rebels. Maybe Qi'ra is force sensitive and will join the Night Sisters. *shrugh* There's also a fun little plot hole. Daenerys is essentially Exchangeable Crime Cartel #1's second in command and/or the boring crime cartel lord's personal property, and they have a very tenous alliance with Exchangebale Crime Cartel #2 that basically runs Kessel's Spice mines. After a train heist goes wrong (yeah let's not for a moment think about why anyone would haul cargo on a train in the freaking Star Wars universe) and in order to have plausible deniability they send Woody Harrelson and his crew to Kessel to steal fuel (whatever, in 40 years nobody ever mentioned fuel in Star Wars and suddenly it's a thing) except of course Qi'ra is ordered to go with them. One would think anyone in allied Crime Cartel #2 would instantly recognize someone so far up the ladder, but eh... whatever. If it weren't a Star Wars prequel the film would have been a nice little space western. Which is more than I would have ever expected given all the troubles the production had. 3 No mind to think. No will to break. No voice to cry suffering.
Bartimaeus Posted May 24, 2018 Posted May 24, 2018 (edited) Wouldn't it have been *better* as a non-Star Wars film, given that it might've actually been somewhat original and not had the outcome already completely known instead of just another sad, desperate retread of some of the things that characters happened to say in the original trilogy? You know, because the writers actually had some ideas of their own when making those ones. Edited May 24, 2018 by Bartimaeus 1 Quote How I have existed fills me with horror. For I have failed in everything - spelling, arithmetic, riding, tennis, golf; dancing, singing, acting; wife, mistress, whore, friend. Even cooking. And I do not excuse myself with the usual escape of 'not trying'. I tried with all my heart. In my dreams, I am not crippled. In my dreams, I dance.
majestic Posted May 24, 2018 Posted May 24, 2018 Definitely. The action scenes might have had some tension. The one you see in the trailer where Chewie is heading towards a rock outcropping on a train? Guess what. He makes it. No mind to think. No will to break. No voice to cry suffering.

You know, because the writers actually had some ideas of their own when making those ones. Yeah, but then no one would go see it. It's not like we haven't had other space westerns recently. None of them did all that well at the box office. This is as close to a guaranteed hit as you can get. edit: I'd like to see them make some movies in the Star Wars universe that do not focus on the core characters, myself. That's part of why I liked Rogue One. They stepped away from the standard arch types. But the further you get from the established lore, the more risk you take on at the box office, I suppose. injurai Posted May 24, 2018 Posted May 24, 2018 Disney's hand over SW is now in full force it seems. The magic that was the opening half of TFA will probably not be captured again in this series. Unless JJ really was the secret sauce, maybe we'll an ending which does more than just setup character development, I'm tired of retreading old ground. Also, don't do new ground like TLJ, yeesh.
ShadySands Posted May 25, 2018 Posted May 25, 2018 Solo. I dunno, my wife really liked it but it was just missing that certain I don't know what. I feel like all the new Star Wars are just off in a way that the Marvel movies aren't. 1 Free games updated 3/4/21
