Quote
“Political philosophers have often pointed out that in wartime, the citizen, the male citizen at least, loses one of his most basic rights, his right to life; and this has been true ever since the French Revolution and the invention of conscription, now an almost universally accepted principle. But these same philosophers have rarely noted that the citizen in question simultaneously loses another right, one just as basic and perhaps even more vital for his conception of himself as a civilized human being: the right not to kill.”

Quote

"The chancellor, the late chancellor, was only partly correct. He was obsolete. But so is the State, the entity he worshipped. Any state, entity, or ideology becomes obsolete when it stockpiles the wrong weapons: when it captures territories, but not minds; when it enslaves millions, but convinces nobody. When it is naked, yet puts on armor and calls it faith, while in the Eyes of God it has no faith at all. Any state, any entity, any ideology that fails to recognize the worth, the dignity, the rights of Man...that state is obsolete."

A quick search tell me those eccentricities were not his normal attire.

Probably a case of the "telephone game" where everything becomes distorted over time and retelling of the story. Im not sure if this link is any more accurate: Orde Wingate: Eccentricity in Action.

For example, that link claims the alarm clock thing was:

Wingate also carried a big alarm clock with him to meetings and set it for 25 minutes. After the alarm went off, he would declare the meeting over, whether the others were done speaking or not.

There were many reasons why Noel Coward wrote "Mad Dogs and Englishmen"...

"Cuius testiculos habeas, habeas cardia et cerebellum."

Heh, I just watched that video (with lyrics) on YouTube.

"But mad dogs and Englishmen
Go out in the midday sun"

BTW, you Brits are hard to understand when you talk fast! :p

Holdo's attire was the least questionable aspect of her character.

This picture was posted on a website with this accompanying question; "If you were in a public place, would you feel comfortable with him sitting ten (10) feet ...away from your children?"

This is the thoughtful response from one (1) of the readers; "I would gently explain to my children that while it is his absolute right to do it, I do not approve. Then I will let them know, in no uncertain terms, that if I ever catch THEM wearing brown slacks, blue socks and black shoes, IN PUBLIC, I will slap the stupid out of them." - Texas Mom

Pretty common sight whenever we spend time in Arizona. The keys on the carabiner seem a bit much though. :p

What's really wrong with that is that he's sitting with his rear exposed, should sit with a wall behind you.
