I loved pretty much everything about the Accountant apart from the 'twist' at the end. I also had issue with the line "You ever see a magic green round traveling 3000 feet per second go through a window ?" •henchman dies• "No one does". How about saying "Hey, I think there's a sniper outside so stay away from the windows" Just a thought. But other than that I really enjoyed it and hope they do a sequel or something similar.

I'm currently a bit into a fan edit of the Hobbit. And so far I've actually been enjoying it, something I felt would never happen with these films.

To its great credit, I've only felt the cut merely twice so far. But in my mind I can think of 5 or 6 things that are missing. And the small jumps it suffers from are worth it.

The last 2 films I watched were The Jungle Book (2016) and Zootopia. Both were really good. If you like fantasy you'll really dig The Jungle Book. Zootopia is a really cute animated movie about a bunny that grows up to be a cop in the big city of Zootopia. The plot was actually really well done.

I thought that new jungle book was bad. The story and pacing was weird and that part where they start singing felt... off to me.

Like, the boy gets away from tiger and tiger sees where he goes but still heads back to the wolves and asks them where the boy went, wtf tiger are you blind?

I like that one old movie a lot more.

He left because the wolves had more leverage and support with the dominate. Once Khan killed Akela he was able to take advantage of the power vacuume. When he cannot catch Mowgli he assumes that he escaped to the village or it was a lost cause because of the chaotic stampede. Just watch it again now that you read this and you'll understand why your wrong.

What for? There really was no need for any of that. He was able to track him before, but then suddenly he cant anymore.

City of Lost Children.

A good classic from the 90's, and had to do it with the French dialogue and English subtitles.

One of Jean-Pierre Jeunet's slightly surreal films, with an edge of steampunk, and Ron Perlman and a couple of very good child actors.

A scientist kidnaps children to steal their dreams for reasons, and after Ron Perlman's brother is kidnapped he goes looking for him, teaming up with the young girl who leads a group of orphan thieves.

Krank can't dream, therefore he needs the kids dreams so he can sleep.  Great film, I need to re-watch it.

I dunno, I don't think the premise was ever 'is there really a witch'.  It's completely off formula for a 2015 horror movie and I might be a little biased. I like that sort of thing.

Yeah the film isn't "Is there a witch?" its "The Witch" (or if you're being pedantic, "The VVitch")

If it wasn't then it should've been. :p To each their own obviously, but I thought it was a weakness. Like the 'intense rabbit' scenes, they would've been freaky in a 'what the hell is wrong with that thing' way if the film didn't make it so easy to go 'oh the witch did something'. And the family's consistent paranoia against each other was well-acted, but would've been much more effective if I could have shared it. Now it started to get irritating because I knew they were wrong, made them feel a little stupid despite their actions being logical because the film gave me too much info to work with as a viewer. It's not fun to see people be wrong all the time. The atmosphere was terrific but there wasn't as much tension in 'what's the witch going to do now' as there would have been in 'what the hell is happening to this poor family' IMO.

I thought the tension was really tied more to the fact that you know there's a witch out there, you know the family has broken with their faith (even as they see themselves as the pious ones) and so the source of suspense is whether any of them will be able to extricate themselves from what is preying on them.

I quite liked the film even with its authentic period English dialogue.

If you're looking for more questions than answers, I can suggest 1983's EYES OF FIRE.  Slightly later time period in the US (early to mid 18th instead of 17th century) but similar ideas - people leave the protection of town due to religious difference and run afoul of dark things in the woods - but with a lot less explanation.

Well, a title's a title you know? Just because The Hobbit is about a Hobbit doesn't mean The Witch has to be about a specific witch. Moreso than the actual witch the conflict came from the family starting to believe the teenage girl was "The VVitch" - that would have worked fine. I'm just saying I feel like the actual Witch, or at least the lack of ambiguity about it from the early preceedings, made it a lot less tense and more slow than it could have been. Plus, that early scene with the baby? Clearly the most horrifying part - it kinda shot its load in the first five minutes and had trouble staying on that level.

It also seemingly was the director's intent for it to be more ambiguous, as he made a point of mentioning in interviews that the "rot" on the grain that causes some of their hunger woes was Ergot, the hallucinogenic fungus that LSD was originally made from that is speculated to have influenced the Salem Witch Trials. So the director intended that ambiguity, he just made some weird decisions that made the movie not convey it. Again, to each their own, but I would have liked that version a lot more - I identify with characters paranoia much more if I get to share it (which is why The Thing remains one of the best horror movies of all time) and especially the ending would have been less ridiculous.

I'm not saying it's a bad film, mind, I'm still super impressed by the acting and cinematography and period detail. I just think it has some big problems in the storytelling department.

Thanks for the recommendation, I'll see if I can find a copy. :)

I dunno, I didn't think it really needed more ambiguity than it had; I saw the ergot 'rot' as being more of a way to create multiple ways to interpret the story rather than an attempt to add ambiguity.  The narrative is straight forward and regardless of how you interpret how we got there, where there was was always clear.

I know a few people who didn't like The Witch, so it has its elements that people dislike.

That's fair. I thought it was too straightforward. A few people blasted it as being "boring", though, and that's a criticism I don't agree with. :p

I really liked Black Phillip

You should google the cast experiences with that goat. You'll like him even more.

Watched The Accountant with the wife, it was excellent. Favorite moment was his awkward wave to the farmer couple after he saved them.

Ben Affleck nailed the performance, but don't forget this is a guy who has gotten thrown out of casinos in real life for counting cards. This was in his wheelhouse.

Passengers. My favorite thing about the movie was that it had my wife and I discussing space travel for a few hours afterwards

Should had taken her to a different movie, then you could have been doing something else for a few hours afterwards.

Hm, and apparently Rogue One has hit the $800 million worldwide mark.

Which means Disney made somewhat in excess of $7 billion at the global box office with its films in 2016.

For the slight snerk

In the weeks, months and years leading up to the release of Rogue One, there was certainly no shortage of rumors regarding the plot, and even the reshoots that took place. Despite all of this, none of the movie's major secrets were leaked prior to the release, but it seems that Diego Luna didn't do the best job of keeping some of the movie's secrets under wraps. During an interview with Yahoo! Movies, the actor revealed he caught his eight-year-old son spilling some of the movie's secrets, while trying to impress some teenage girls.

"It helped me to play a spy, because I had so much information, like my character, that I couldn't share. I'm the opposite. I always tell everything I'm doing. I want to share it and I want people to know the story I'm putting together. I did tell my kids. I told my son. They came to set, they spent the whole summer with me, the first two months of shooting. They would come to set, and promise not to tell anyone. You know what happened? We went once to the beach. I remember we were in the pool, I was with friends, my son was swimming and then I lost him. I go where is he, and I see these four 16-year-old girls, this guy is 8, and he's talking to them. This sounds a little fishy, so I start swimming and I just listen, 'Oh no, this film has no Jedi, it's just Rebels.'"

Rogue One started production last summer, but by then, the studio had already announced the story followed a group of Rebels stealing plans for the Death Star. Still, it was never officially revealed that this story had no Jedi warriors, and very little was revealed about any of the individual characters until it was much closer to the release. Diego Luna added that he had to scold his son about leaking these spoilers, but, at the same time, he was also kind of proud of him.

"But then, he did it for the right reason, right? He was talking to the girls and he got their attention, so I had to talk to him later and say 'you cannot tell people, until they see the trailer, that we are Rebels, you know? People today don't know we're rebels.' He said, 'OK, OK, I won't do that.' But then I wanted to say that was a good move, by the way. A very good move, and if you wait another eight years, you might be ready."

I just rewatched 13 Days with Kevin Costner about the Cuban Missile Crisis. I'd forgotten how good it was. I wonder how our current President and President Elect would have handled that?

On second thought... no I probably don't want to know.

That and Anna Kendrick getting all hot and bothered when he did match really quickly were my favourite moments.

Counting cards in blackjack is actually quite a simple thing. You start at 0 and just +1 for every dealt big card and -1 for every small card. Then you ask for more cards according to your +- number. Or was it when to bet high? Well something like that anyway. You don't actually have to count the cards.

Keeping track of the pluses, minuses, and factoring the amount of decks quickly all while dealing with the incredible distractions a Vegas casino floor throws at you requires tremendous focus. Doing that well enough to get banned from a major casino is impressive. Considering he isn't a professional mathematician, even more so.

The Accountant is awesome. His new movie, Live By Night, also looks awesome. In conclusion, Affleck is awesome.

And, the fact that casinos are butthurt over him makes it even sweeter.

I saw Suicide Squad the Extended Edition or whatever it was called.

I didn't like it. My main problem with it was that the story wasn't using the characters. Like was there any reason for the boomerang guy? He wasn't needed in any situation. The story didn't even use the crocodile guy properly in the underwater scene. How can you mess that up? Either have him be the only survivor after the fight and set up the bomb or show him protecting the navy seal while navy seal sets up the bomb. But no.

1) Boomerang guy had surveillance boomerangs (which he used to spy on Incubus).  He was also a fair fighter and shown to be able to break into places, so not without some skill.

2) Croc was still fighting when the SEAL guy left with the bomb to set it up.

I saw Rogue One today and I would rate it as second best Star Wars movie after Empire Strikes Back. I even got bit teary eyed two times:

when "force is with me" bros died

and "red leader, gold leader standing by" scene.
